Ok I know this isn't much of a bragging sizable skillet fish but I was just glad to get out there for a couple hours anyways. The funny part of this is this ****er took off with my pole off the deck and my son was close by but he didn't get to it in time. He grabbed a net but the pole quickly got out of reach so guess who jumped in the lake after my pole? Me that's who. I took off my shoes and pants and got in about waist high . Freaking water was cold . So I got my pole and reeled in this ****er. I was actually pleased with myself for not being out there very long and catch something. I let him go back in the water. Did I mention the water was cold? |

It's time for me to learn jerk baits and plastics. Wacky rigged and what not. Haven't been having much success with my normal tactics.

Used it a number of times and have yet to have any luck, but a lot of people swear by it I havent been out in over a month, but there are a dozen nightcrawlers in the fridge that need to go soon |

Been fishing a private lake. Tons of 3 pound channel. Crazy fast fishing. Its hard to keep poles baited. My 8 year old boy got the permission to fish. We went to an estate sale and he was talking to one of the old ladies running the sale. Asked her how much for the pond as we were looking from the house at the lake. She laughed and one thing led to another we are fishing a private lake on an 80 acre lot. The home is a listed at a $900,000 super nice spread. The lake is supreme. Wish we had found it earlier in the season. But wth it's going to be a blast until the cold sets in.

We are taking the fish and stocking our 7 ponds.

I went fishing today on my fil's dock.
Caught a crappie limit in 22 minutes. |
Fished for two hours yesterday and didn't catch one though. They were deeper than I figured I guess.

I caught a 3 3/4 lb largemouth out of Shawnee Mission Park over the weekend from my kayak. There aren't huge fish in there but there is a good population of nice sized bass.

Same here man. I get to get out of my comfort zone. |
Plastics are where it's at this time of the year. A slower retrieve and more time in the strike zone is generally better. You can actually even have good luck with jigs under a cork. Bass are still oriented somewhat to shore but not right on it super shallow so if you throw it out there at 3-4 foot deep and let it float near structure and jig it slowly you have a great chance.
|
Bass are just now starting to bite again down here.
Summertime sucks so bad for catching bass. |

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00LD...M8L&ref=plSrch https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00FE...BlL&ref=plSrch Plus i picked up some Whisker Seeker 50lb mono line to throw on it. I'm not ****ing around next summer. |

Though I did finally get around to learning open faced reels, and like yourself... I'm not jacking around next year either, except what I mean by that is going much further afield looking for out of the way spots If that means less trips but better fishing when I do go... so be it |
I think I'm going to try the dock in the am. See what's up.

It's a similar setup to all of my serious catfisher friends. They swear by it. |
Baitcasters are all I use. Every now and again I'll use my spinning real.
Didn't catch anything yesterday. Probably my last trip for the year. Water was down to 56 in the main lake, 60 closer to the power plant discharge. I worked spinnerbaits and cranks mainly. I'm trying to expand my lure selection. Worms are next. I've always been mainly a crankbaits and shad softbait kind of guy. |

Thats what I call fishing, its hard to imagine just how good that meal was... fresh as monkey breath! |
Parents surprised me with an Abu Garcia c6500 for Christmas too.
Put it on a Rippin Lips 7'5 medium heavy rod. Spring needs to get here. |

Only problem is I will have to go buy new line and restring my rigs were I to be smart about it, they got left on my covered back porch during the deep freeze of last week... my line is probably brittle as glass |

Man... i want to go fishing. My poles are all rigged up and collecting dust.
8/0 circle hooks are expensive. Have a tackle box full of em now. Got about $100 worth of gear that will all end up at the bottom of the Kansas river by October. Just need to stock up on weights from 6oz to 16oz. Also need to pick up nice scale. Go big or go home. |

So I take them and he tells me what to tell them to do. He watches them cast in the house though. I do everything else with it. For him and them. It's not really my thing, although it's starting to grow on me. And it's free. He has so many bags from bass pro in his building that it's gotten to be many thousands of dollars. He's got this dock spot that he's owned for over 30 years and has built beds under it since he bought it. My brother in law dives down and works on it several times a year. They are always there. |
Quote:
Having a 'spot' for them to fish and catch at is 3/4 of the battle in keeping them interested. Good on you for helping the old guy keep being that part of there lives. I'd have gave anything to have someone to take me fishing when i was young. Had an aunt that got me started at about 3 yrs old. She unfortunately died when I was 5...I had the fever,..dad was already dead so I used to drop a line in any place that held water. lmao, fished in a goldfish ponds in parks, any running water i could find, anywhere that had a fish in it. lmao |

If I'm eating anything, it's Walleye, but i don't fish for Walleye. When i catch those, it's by accident. Also, I'm all for softshell turtle genocide. Once the current goes down on the Kaw, those cock suckers are everywhere. |

Been talking a lot of fishing with my son. He is ready to quit shooting geese and ducks and start slinging his rod. Thinking about a trout trip to start us off.

What other kinda fish would you compare it to eating wise? Always found it strange that my state is so close to Missouri and Kansas, yet we do not have that species of fish in abundance anywhere near me... what is so different east of the Mississippi? |

This thread has me wanting to go fishing. My dad and I are looking at a trout trip. A small lake near me stocks them this time of year. I've never been. What tackle should I be using?

Use spinning gear, with a Light or Ultra-Light Rod, between 6 or 7 feet long. I use monofilament line or fluro line, between 4 and 6 pound test. Don't go over 6 pound test with trout, they actually have fairly decent eyesight and they get spooked easily. Small egg type hooks will suffice #4 to #8 size. Now, if you are using dough style baits, the trout will always swallow the hook...so I usually rig up several leaders using monofiliment, ranging anywhere from 3 to 5 feet long, with a hook on one end and a snap on the other. Then just tie on a swivel or another snap to your combo and when you get a fish, it's as simple as unsnapping the leader and throwing the fish on the stringer, then you just snap on another leader and bait and you are good to go. I just use a simple split shot rig and a bell, you don't really need much of a weight, a few split shots on the line will work. DO NOT USE A FLOAT IF YOU ARE USING FLOATING DOUGH BAIT. It defeats the purpose. I usually use Rainbow Colored Berkley Power Bait, the one with Garlic. It works great. I have also used Berkley floating corn nuggets (garlic flavored) and the floating Dough Bait that simulates hatchery pellets (it's brown) with good success. You can use small worms such as meal worms and regular earthworms, but you will need a float to determine where in the water column the fish are...but again, I have such great luck with the floating dough style baits, that I rarely do it that way. I just stick to my split shot rig and leader method with a bell. I have also used Mepps or Panther Martin inline Spinners, Kastmasters, Phoebes, with success if you want to go the lure route. As for cleaning the fish, I usually just gut and scale them, fry 'em up with the skin on, but you can filet the bigger ones. Pretty dang tasty. :) |
2 things....
Yesterday, Jan 21, It was 60 degrees while felling trees and cutting firewood. As I tractored across the pond dam, I saw turtles sunning on a tree that lays in the pond. Nor sure if turtles in MO know ther is a January. Second...just scored a 3 wt, old school, fiberglass fly rod. Bluegills on a 3 wt will be wonderful fun. Thats all |

I'm going on my annual trout trip to the White River in Ar pretty soon. Been going for many years. We go last week of Feb, which is sort of a mixed bag weather wise, but there aren't many fishermen out, so that is nice. I use a gold Poebe from Acme lure company and pretty much outfish everyone else out there. Most guys use cleos or jigs. Some guys use corn or powerbait, but that's a pain in the ass if you ask me.

Went lake trout fishing today. I caught my first trout and only one. Weighed in at 1.27lbs. We catch and release everything so she got to live.
