-   -   Chiefs Chiefs hire Steve Spagnuolo as new defensive coordinator (https://chiefsplanet.com/BB/showthread.php?t=320876)

They hired him to stop Brady and New England

RealSNR 01-26-2021 06:37 PM

Time to play "Where are they now?"

Kris Richard
Steve Wilks
Rex Ryan

Not on this list: Steve Spagnuolo, the defensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs, who has helped the team go to back-to-back Super Bowls. He was hired over the previous three names mentioned.

It is a little odd that literally no one talks about Spags in terms of a possible HC shot. They barely give him credit for the job he's done with KC. Part of me is glad of that, but it does seem a little strange.

Kind of remember wanting Hewitt, Richard, or Venables.

That was nearly 10 years ago. You think he hasn't learned anything since then? That people might change over a decade? he ha a proven track record for taking defenses that were wallowing in the bottom tier and turning them into top tier units, so we know he can coach. His players seem to love him in KC, so he appears to be a player's coach. And now he has two SB rings.

How he fared in STL, after hiring Pat Shurmur, who left for CLE, and then was saddled with Josh McDaniels at OC, shouldn't really be a factor in 2021 and beyond.

I think Spags would probably be successful if given another head coaching opportunity with a decent QB situation. Fortunately I think the NFL has completely moved on.

It never really works like that

So owners are just really stupid? Kind of makes sense, I guess. Explains the Jets. And WAS until they finally hired Rivera.

Seriously a great hire.

All three are currently out of the NFL.

Not sure about the other two but Im guessing Rex Ryan is licking cheese whiz off his wife's dirty feet.

Can't believe some of the guys in this thread who didn't like this hire. Such morons!

Hindsight always 20/20.

Reid traded one friend for another. Good ol boy network wasnt something anyone wanted. We had seen enoug with Vermiel/Robinson, and then TWO historic playoff collapses of 28 and 18 point leads out of Reid/Sutton.

He made the right call, but most battered Chiefs fans were not loving this news.

Everybody seemed to have their own favorite candidates based on past performance as DCs. Or their success as position coaches. Including me, even though I was fine with the hire.

DCing is a hard job. In any season and at any time you can get totally and utterly ****ed. Injuries. Players who have off years. And let's also not forget just being a defensive coordinator for a team without much talent on it at all. Somebody's gotta do it. What else are you going to do? Not take a job you want?

Spags was on some shitty teams. Some shitty shitty shitty teams. And his defenses ended up being very shitty. And that's all people wanted to look at.

People thought every other DC out there could make chicken salad out of chicken shit, and that ain't necessarily so. Those DCs are very rare.
