That sucks.

Go get a couple of shelter pets needing a good home and do it all over again.

I should clarify that the old mutt, Sasha, was 18.5 years old when we had to put her down about 5 years ago. She lived way longer than anyone expected. She was a great dog but not exactly a buddy like my boxers were. The cat was also 18+ years old when she died a couple years ago. So while I was sad to see them go those were a little easier.

Lzen 07-14-2017 07:25 AM

I appreciate all the comments. I want to get another dog (or two) but we plan to sell our house in about 3 years when our daughter is out of high school. We should be in a better financial situation to do that then. And we know it's a pain to try to do showings when you have pets. So we decided to take a break until we move. It's killing me but I know it's probably for the best.

I get that. About 1 1/2 years ago I had to put down my 18 year old beagle. While I loved the old gal it wasn't as hard as some of my other pets. She'd lived a long, good life and it was her time.

Sorry for your loss, Lzen. Whenever you're ready, it sounds like your household is a great place for an animal(s) to call home. Respect.

Here's a recent pic of my pooch. He's getting big, 16 lbs as of last Wednesday. He's really good with my little boy. Still bites a little hard, but he's a pup. A work in progress.

SAUTO 09-06-2017 02:56 PM

So we had a litter from our boxers a while back and 2 older ladies bought a pair, they are best friends and wanted puppies.

One is pretty frail and can't take care of the dog so they asked if we could take her back.

She doesnt even want her thousand dollars back. Looks like we will have another one.

I had a feeling it wouldn't work with her, we had the puppy at least six weeks after all the rest were gone because she was in the hospital. Hell we had her house broken and pretty well trained. My kids loved that one and didn't want her to go.

She still might lol i really wanted to get a male rott for my female.

So sorry Dave. :(

This excessive heat and building boom is making the wild animals a little more aggressive this year. They have had a few incidents up here in northern Scottsdale-Anthem-Cave Creek with bobcats and coyotes and rodents and snakes.

He is trained to act like a bad ass on command: "Who's there?" starts barking, hair on end, and if inside runs to the door. If outside he is between me and whom ever. his wagging tail gives him away but, unless you know him, you never notice the tail...

Furball is more like it.

Cat's do love boxes! We used to rub the Christmas gift boxes with catnip just before opening them. It was Christmas for the kitty too. My Lab was trained to get my now ex's cat "get the kitty" started a riot at my house. Her cat had claws so it was a fair fight.

Kind of a weird issue. There's a function in vbulletin that lets you tag a thread so that every new post in the thread has to be approved by a moderator to show up. We don't use it here, and I'm not even entirely sure how it works. But somehow it got turned on for this thread.

I just went through and approved all the posts, and things seem fine now.

Hey all - We could use all the thoughts and prayers we can get. Our schnauzer Chuey has had a bad bout of pancreatitis and is currently in the doggy hospital. He started throwing up last night and is very dehydrated. Other tests indicate issues so they did xrays and ultrasound. The results were not good. He has an issue with his stomach not emptying, his liver and kidneys are not normal. He is in pretty bad shape and we considered putting him down this evening. We reconsidered and left him with the vet so that they can give him fluids throughout the night and see where it all stands tomorrow. If his stomach situation improves from the fluids, which the vet thinks it might, then we will probably get to bring him home. If not, then it is likely because his stomach has gotten twisted or is being interfered with by a tumor or mass and surgery will be necessary.

We have already decided that we will not put him through surgery and will put him down if that is the case. I'm doing ok now, but was a blubbering mess at the vets earlier this evening. My wife is coping too. We could use prayers for comfort for Chuey, wisdom for the doctors to heal him and coping for my wife and I no matter the outcome.

stumppy 10-12-2017 09:59 PM

Best of luck man.

Well, we didn't wait too long after all. I really got the bug for another dog and especially from some of the suggestions on here. Also, friends were sending me stuff on Facebook. I got my wife to give in to that and I started checking online for boxer rescues in Kansas. There are a lot more rescues than I realized. This was a lot more of a pain than I anticipated.

There was a pair of 3-year-old brothers that were in KC that needed a new home. It was posted by a hospice so I assume that the owner died. I contacted them but since it went around FB, there were tons of people trying to get those guys. The family decided that they wanted to place them in KC (we're an hour from there) so we didn't get them.

Then we found a 1-year-old female at a rescue organization in Manhattan. We went there a couple of weeks ago to meet her and my wife instantly bonded with her. They had told me that this girl had been abused by a man so she was a little fearful of men and that there would need to be females in her new home. That was no problem. Also, she came right up to me and licked me. I truly think dogs can sense if you're a POS dog beater or if you're an animal lover. They talked to us as if we were the perfect home because we're a family and the other people wanting to rescue her were just a single woman and a couple. By the time we heard back they had decided to give her to somebody else. They said that we were qualified to rescue any of their other dogs but for some reason they decided that this one needed to go somewhere else. My wife was devasted which I wasn't really expecting because she was the one who kept saying that we didn't need to get another dog. She was also kind of pissed at the way this whole thing went down.

I had applied for another boxer at a different rescue. They, for some strange reason, couldn't confirm that we had given our previous boxers regular vaccinations. I'm really not sure why that was so hard to confirm as I gave them the names of the different vets we had used over the years. They were very strict about that so they said we would not be able to rescue from their organization. It's unfortunate because they are missing out on a great home for some dogs in need. But whatever.

While we were waiting a few days on the answer from the Manhattan rescue, I had found another pair of brothers on http://boxer.rescueme.org/kansas. The owner had a daughter who started developing an allergy to the dogs. The doctor said that she would have to either get treatment or get rid of the dogs. The treatment involved multiple shots a day for several months. The 8 year old didn't like that, obviously. I told her that if the Manhattan one didn't work out that we would be interested in coming to meet hers. Her rehoming fee was a little higher than most but that's because she insisted that they go together since they were brothers from the same litter and are inseperable. That was no problem for us so we went down to Wichita the day after the Redskins game and came home with our new family members. I'll post a pic but I gotta figure out why it's failing to upload.

Rocky and Apollo. They will be 2 in December. Still a little in the rambunctious puppy stage but coming into adulthood. They are very playful but well behaved for the most part. And potty trained, which is nice that we don't have to go through that stage.

Fire Me Boy! 10-13-2017 08:18 AM

Great names for boxers!

Marcellus 10-13-2017 08:44 AM

Kind of a long story but about 6 weeks ago we were looking for another Bull Mastiff for a companion to go along with our female dog Nova.

Called the breeder we got her from and they still had her brother as he was supposed to go to a service dog company and the service dog company backed out.

The lady who ran the kennel got very sick and before she passed away earlier this year they had decided to give the dog to a Veteran. I called out of the blue to see if they had any pups for sale and he said he had one dog left but it had to go to a Veteran. Coincidentally I am a Veteran so he gave me the dog. So I have manged to get 2 fully registered AKC Bull Mastiffs from the same breeders for $0.

Here is Novas brother Bradley and then a pic of both of them. They both just turned 2. He has been kenneled his whole life so he is adjusting to having a house and yard etc...but is doing great.

Nova is only about 95lbs which is the smaller side for the breed, he is pushing 140lbs.

Thanks for all the well wishes and prayers. He's not out of the woods yet, but some improvement this morning. He ate some food and the vet said he looked "brighter". If he can keep food down today, they will redo the ultrasound and see how his stomach looks. If that goes well then we can probably bring him home Monday. He has a lot of issues to get past first though. Cautiously optimistic right now.

I hope your pup gets better. Nothing stresses me out more than having to take one of my cat pals to the vet. Actually my wife does it mostly now. I've had to take four or five over the years to be put down for various health reasons. It makes my cry every single time, and I don't even like walking into the vet's office any more. My little pal Meesh Meesh had to have some teeth pulled a couple months ago. He's doing better now. Last night he watched Thursday Night Football with me. He likes cat teams. He was bummed because the Panthers lost.

Good to hear. Dogs and animals in general are some tough mofo's. Just looking better means a lot from my experience. I hope you can bring the little fella home soon.

We got to bring Chuey home today. He's still not anywhere close to 100% but he is now passing food through his stomach and he's been on IV fluids the last couple of days to deal with the dehydration issues. But the Dr. felt that he was better off with us this weekend than being left at the vets where they have little or no staff until Monday. He's been pretty much sleeping or trying to anyway since we brought him home this afternoon. Hopefully we see more improvement the next day or two.

Thanks again for the continued thoughts and prayers.

Glad to hear it. He's got to be on better spirits because of that alone.

One last update on this. He is pretty much back to normal now. Still lacking a little energy, but clearly the worst is behind him. I can't help but think how close we came to putting him down and so glad we gave him and extra day to see if he could fight his way back. We still have the concern of his liver cancer, but we've already got a year past the initial diagnosis, so who knows how much longer he'll be with us?

Thanks again for everyone's thoughts and prayers!

Good news! I don't know what I would do without my dogs.

That's good to hear, man. With my old boxers we had to go through that kind of stuff. My old boy was just getting so bad that even though it was very hard, we felt it was best for him to have the vet put him down. One of the toughest decisions I've ever had to make. Good luck and God bless, Bob.

Glad to hear about the pup. Maybe weeks, maybe a year or more - enjoy it either way because it's house money at this point.

Is he a Rotty or a Rotty crossed with a doby ? If he's a Rotty you need to get him wormed and upgrade his feed .

He’s a German Rotty and he has been dewormed. He’s only 7 months old weighing around 55 lbs. He eats the Pedigree puppy mix and we feed him Costco brand wet formula food.
