they're still around (or back I guess). They have Joe's KC Fries Seasoning chips which are pretty good but incredibly salty. I usually get their sour cream and onion chips which are good on a turkey sandwich. their party mix is also pretty okay, not a fan of a cheerio in a snack mix.

The BBQ is the best. They are the only BBQ chip that isn't sweet.

While this may be true, the La Tiera White Corn Shells warmed in the oven for a bit, two shells placed together on one taco, took taco's to a whole different level of greatness! A taco that is so good that it's going to be difficult to replicate.

That's gonna happen at our house this weekend. And I'm probably going to buy up and hoard all I can find on my trips to the store these next few trips there. If there are any left.

I just looked in the pantry, and I have 78 shells on the shelf now. But I'm still going to buy a few more if the stores still have any.

We do eat a lot of taco's. None are outdated. Like I said, we double up the shells. Some nights we use 18 shells, but most nights we use 24 shells and might have a couple left over. Taco's once a week here usually. Just buy the 12 and 18 packs when we are low.

No, it really isn't hard to replicate. A freshly fried taco shell will always be better than a store bought one that you warmed back up. You can make them better at home. You may require practice, but yours will then be better once you learn how to do it, and it is not a difficult thing to do.

I am jealous!

I can tell by some of the comments in this thread about them that many haven't tried them.

I have never had a stale one and they are so light that I can't imagine being able to come close to replicating them at home.

Those Taco Bell ones are so heavy and stiff they almost bite back!

Yeah, corn tortillas are cheap and versatile. You can fry them if you really want taco shells and it's cheaper and tastes better.

I generally don't do fried shells. I love good, fresh corn tortillas.

Those Taco Bell ones are like that because they are made by a vendor and then sent along a long supply chain to each individual store. Then they sit on a shelf in a cardboard box. Then they are taken out of their plastic wrappers and set inside a serving tray for hours in a warming cabinet before being brought to the line. They used to be much better because they were made from stacks of corn tortillas. Those fresh corn tortillas were put in taco molds and deep fried in lard and those cooked taco shells were never more than a day old, in busy stores those shells were always less than 12 hours old. Because freshly fried taco shells are always better.

listopencil 03-14-2025 01:43 PM

If you non cooking guys really want to blow your minds, takes some fresh corn tortillas and cut a stack of them like you would a pizza. Now take all of those corn triangles and put them in a frying basket and deep fry them in lard. Stir them continuously until nice and crispy. Take them out, drain them, salt them. Now go make the best nachos you ever had.

I am a cooking guy, do it every day of the week, but yeah, I can't do anything that has even been in the same room as lard.

Didn't know anyone still had that stuff. My grandma used to keep bacon grease beside the stove, but I haven't even tasted real bacon in at least a decade.

My love for these LaTiera shells is due to them being light and low on calories.

Enjoy that stuff while you can!

The ones in the stores are the same. They just sit on your shelf instead of their shelf.

You can buy a brick of it at a large grocery chain store. It may be labeled as 'manteca.' There used to be a brand that was sold in a green and white box. As long as you drain the shells thoroughly, they won't be gross from the lard.

listopencil 03-14-2025 02:20 PM

If the lard really bothers you badly then you can use whatever oil you prefer, but lard gives the best flavor.

Armour lard may actually be healthier for you and doesn't carry that distinctive smell.

You can use a much lighter oil if you want. And corn tortillas for tacos, the properly sized ones, are pretty low in calories and gluten free.

My cardiologist would vehemently disagree with you and I have detected no smell. But I do remember one from lard many years ago. That being said, we will just have to agree to disagree, I won't be be frying my taco shells no matter what the oil.
The La Tiera shells were only 28 calories each.

Bet your cardiologist has you on a statin too, right? I'm not suggesting you use lard - I don't. But there's a lot of misinformation out there about fats and heart diseases. It's a multi-billion dollar industry.

Furthermore, do you know fully what is in those mass produced taco shells? They could very well be "heart healthy" and still be poison. Speaking of that - you know that exposing grape seed oil to high heat, like frying, is bad right? It's edible but it's not suitable for high heat cooking.

Lots of wisdom in your post! Yeah, I have been on statins for almost 18 years now and my body is finally rejecting them due to the pain. Next week I get some kind of expensive shot that will be repeated every six months.

You are right, the cholesterol thing is an obsession with them. My latest was 140 total.

I had no idea grape seed oil was not suitable for high heat cooking. Will go back to Olive oil, thanks!:thumb:

I went low carb, eat tons of protein and fats, and my cholesterol and blood pressure went way down. I quit 3 medications.

Mostly because I quit listening to my doctor. I ate healthier. And I still hit the local pizza buffet about once a week. I'm not some diet slave.

Fat is good for you, not bad. Artificial fillers, preservatives, and processed garbage is garbage. High sugar is horrible for you. Alcohol, in large amounts, is horrible for you. You are less likely to get cancer if you smoke regularly than drink regularly and I was as big a drinker as anyone can be. I enjoyed my boos but I'm healthier now at 50 than I was at 30.

Of course! Twinkies and ho hos and cupcakes.

Of course the cream in them depleted over the years, but was good.

Peel the chocolate covering off the cupcake and eat last.

But, everything has changed, and not necessarily for the better.

Cadbury eggs suck now. Used to be awesome when they first came out.

Good for you! Yeah, I'm on a BP, gout, and thyroid pill. Had to quit drinking a year ago. 1 year ago today was thrown in the hospital because of an ulcer in my colon. Ripped out a couple of feet of it.

Now, the wet behind the ears doc calls a couple of days ago talking I got the Wilfred Brimley. Starts talking medications and I'm like wait wait wait. First send me some shit about how to adjust my diet and shit before I start singing the lower A1C jingle. Jesus I swear that's all they do anymore is become pill pushers.

I've also wanted to switch primary doctors. This is a good opportunity.

I try. I'm no expert but I care about you (and everybody else here).

The thing about grape seed oil is it's really great uncooked, like as a salad dressing. I sometimes use it with BBQ under low heat. It just doesn't survive the high heat and can possibly be toxic.

Due to your post I googled it and there is a lot of information out there about it. It has some really good qualities but I guess the main issue is the chemical often used to harvest it having left over residue. It should say on the bottle how it was produced, but I have already discarded ours in favor of a dispenser.

Our recent trip to Sam's I picked up a new quart of Olive oil and holy crap has that ever gotten expensive. :deevee:

crayzkirk 03-15-2025 09:26 AM

We've gone off topic however most seed oils are not healthy. Anyone remember when McD's fries were fried in beef tallow? Those were some tasty fries.

Right. I only suggested lard because we are talking about frying tortillas, and lard has given me the best results for that over the years. I don't even have any in the house right now. I use olive oil.

Growth is expensive.

Success kills a lot of businesses that don't prepare for it correctly. They just know they have a lot of sales and want to have more so they try to scale up without a plan for the additional overhead and immediately find themselves buried by the debt service.

"If you're not growing, you're dying" is accurate to a point. In some cases, the growing causes the dying. Growth is important but it gotta be thought out. Sometimes the worst thing that can happen to a business is one of those massive vendor contracts that they're just not ready for. They scale up too quickly and everything falls to shit.

Yeah, so very true! Back in the day, Sears would cripple a company with so much business they would end up taking them over.

Walmart may have had some impact here, but I did read a post, not sure how accurate, that two guys bought the company and then drained it of cash.

Most of the big box retailers still do that....they want to become the largest customer so they can demand price concessions or to figure out how to make the same item cheaper and drive the company to more concessions or out of business.

Grab a soft taco tortilla and smear a thin layer of refried beans on it then wrap it around a typical crispy beef taco.

Me and a manager that worked under me used to make them at Taco Bell in the early 90's. At some point Taco Bell released them as double decker tacos, then discontinued them. Tasty, doesn't fall apart, more filling than a single normal taco.

In HS I would get stoned and eat two of them and they would fill you right up even if you had the munchies.

Taco Bell really ****ed that up. The original item was perfect, but it was meant to be a limited time only special. They would bring it back, but only intermittently, so a stable supply of ingredients was never established and quality could not be maintained. You might remember the Chilito taking its place at one point. That was to mask the issue by pretending it was a different item. I think they finally gave up.

OK, La Tiara fans. I've been made aware of a pretty decent alternative that's made locally. Same thin and crispy style.

Art's Molino & Market. Just off I-70 and 169, near where Slap's BBQ is.

My mother said that Art's is what everyone bought before LaTiara came around, I'll be getting those too.

Lets talk more Tacos. I had some delicious Chicken Tacos the other day.

The two chicken tacos I had at Habaneros the other day were the best I have ever eaten. I noticed they have four locations, but didn't make a note of their where. Their home made chips were incredible.

Not really, I ended up at Seneca Bowl with a couple of bowling buddies. After a couple handfuls of buckets of beers, I just went back home. Bowling was fun though. We were testing their lanes for the Kansas Tournament we bowled in. (Out of 9 games, I had 5 with scores above 208)

I’m headed to check some places today. Leeker’s Park City is my first stop.

That is a lot of bowling and good scores! Good luck at leeker's. We are having our first taco night tonight without La Tiera shells. It just won't be the same.

Found zero boxes. I have two 36 count boxes in my pantry. Then I am out

You should lock the door and set up a security camera.

I used Old El Paso low carb shells tonight. They suck and are so hard they almost bight back.

srvy 04-04-2025 06:55 PM

Arts used to be stocked in Sunfresh Thriftway and Price chopper. Then they just disappeared. I suppose you have to go to Art's Market now.

srvy 04-04-2025 06:57 PM

I will just fry my own or go the soft tortilla route.

I don’t even know what direction to go with shells. I have only used these shells and we eat the shit out of some tacos.
