The Hitcher: Saw several Rutger Hauer mentions. For my money, you could do a lot worse then this little number. C. Thomas Howell and Jennifer Jason Leigh star with the ever-terrifying Hauer in one of his most unforgettable roles that doesn't involve Stallone in drag or tears getting lost in the rain.

I love both of those movies.

I'm generally not a rom-com guy, but that movie is fantastic. Great cast, great chemistry between Fox and Warner, hilarious, heart-warming, the whole nine yards. And the scene where they're dancing to Patsy Kline's Crazy was amazing.

I watched Silverado last week. I'd completely forgotten about it, but man that's a good western.

ChiliConCarnage 03-19-2025 01:48 PM

Not super old but I watched Killing them Softly on Tubi. I didn't remember it at all. From 2010 so not real old.

Gangster heist type. Nothing amazing but damn did it have a good cast. Pitt, Ben Mendelsohn, Gandolfini, Liotta. I tend to enjoy Scoot McNairy and Richard Jenkins too

Kinda funny, this scene would never get made today along with scenes in Weird Science.

“Urban people of color are scary!”. Was always good for laughs in the 80s. 😂

I watched the original Vacation movie the other day on some mainstream channel. The St. Louis scene had a whole bunch of awkward cuts.

I like when he gives the $20 for directions and he expected $10 back in change and the guy just pockets the $20. ROFL

Heh. I was older when I saw it, but I can definitely see those things scaring the crap out of a child.

Of course, I'll see your spider robots and raise you Jaws in the theater when I was 10. That ****ed me up for life.

There is a great movie Stallone did about 10 years earlier called "Paradise Alley".

Check it out.

I had nightmares for weeks after seeing that - my mattress was the raft, floating in the ocean, the music would play... and BOOM SHARK!!!!!! I'd wake up screaming. I can still hear my mom saying "I never should have taken you to see that ****ing movie." LMAO

Since then, and we're talking almost 50 years now, I've always been uneasy in any body of water where I didn't know what else was in there with me. Big Night

Stanley Tucci, Tony Shalhoub, Minnie Driver, Allison Janney, Isabella Rossellini, Ian Holm, Campbell Scott, Marc Anthony, Liev Schreiber

Cool factoid about this film: the actor playing the barber in the film later plays the role of Remo Gaggi in Goodfellas.

Jaws was scary for kids but that Creepshow with the oil slick that pulled in teenagers made summer camp uncomfortable for many swimmers. I saw lots of kids scanning the water for approaching oil slicks before jumping off the wooden rafts at the lake.

Yeah, that shit's not nearly as scary on a 19-25" TV.

I was too young to see The Exorcist in the theater, and when I finally saw it on HBO in the late 70s when I was a teenager it didn't bother me at all. I actually thought the demon was kind of funny.

No movie has affected my life more than watching Jaws as a kid. I sometimes have an irrational fear response when swimming in a ****ing lake. I can't see myself ever scuba diving. And I LOVE the movie now. One of the absolute all time best. But it ****ed me up.

Funny thing is, its not necessarily irrational to be fearful around inland fresh water

A giant catfish or huge snapping turtle can kill a grown man if they catch you off guard and mistake your shiny white foot or hand for a dying or lazy fish

The best part - two weeks after seeing Jaws we went to ****ing FLORIDA for the first time. When we went to the beach I wouldn't go out in the water deeper than my knees. Of course, I wasn't alone in that regard. There were plenty of adults doing the same thing. Most of them, actually. :D

I was in the Navy, and I've been to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. And I can count on one hand the number of times I've swam in the ocean and have some fingers left over.

That's a good one. And I don't normally like kids in movies, but those little shits are hilarious.

Another forgotten Kurt Russell movie from the 80s that I absolutely love is The Best of Times. Robin Williams plays the loser who dropped what would have been the winning pass (from Russell) in the biggest game of his life, never got over it, and then sets out to rewrite history. Russell is a great straight man to Williams' lunacy.

Some other comedies from the 80s:

The Man With Two Brains. My second favorite Steve Martin movie after Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Over the top goofy and silly, plus a smoking hot young Kathleen Turner.

Ruthless People. One of my favorite comedies ever. If you like your laughs with a vicious edge to them, this movie is for you. Danny DeVito absolutely slays.

The Man With One Red Shoe. Forgotten early Tom Hanks movie that seemed to get bashed by everybody, including Hanks, but I thought it was great. Wonderful supporting cast, including Footloose's gorgeous Lori Singer and a scenery chewing Dabney Coleman as the bad guy.

Yah. And a catfish will probably let go of your foot once it realizes it's not a fish. A snapping turtle don't give a shit.

When i was in HS my buddies invited me to go wrassling once; I know a posted about it years ago around here somewhere. Bottom line, when they told me they were going to tie a rope around me and the bumper of the truck "just in case" I decided i had a hair appt I'd forgotten about, lol.

If you wanna see another side to Kurt Russell, check out The Battered Bastards of Baseball. It's a doc from about ten years ago covering his time playing in independent league baseball up in Portland. Team was owned by his larger than life father. Great, great stuff.

Hackman OWNS that movie. When he grabs Michael Rooker's balls, I feel that.

"Now get this straight shitkicker! Don't you go confusin' me with some whole other body. You must have your brains in your dick if you think we're gonna just walk away from this. We're gonna stay 'till this gets done."

Turns to the Brad Dourif, Deputy character...: "How 'bout you, Deputy. That gun of yours just for show or do you get to shoot people once in a while?"

Frees Rookers nuts: "Thanks for the beer."

What's got four eyes in it and can't see? Mississippi.

And oh baby... the scene when he gets to have some fun with the Deputy/Brad Dourif. Soooo satisfying... "You got a stupid smile, you know that?" "Make no mistake Deputy, I'll cut your ****ing head off and not give a shit how it reads in the report sheet."

Pure intimidation. Dude knew how to be scary as hell without going over the top. Just ask Morgan Freeman from their time together on Unforgiven.

"Now I ain't gonna hurt no woman. But I am gonna hurt you (Ned). And not gentle like before... But *BAD*."

I thought of another old 80s comedy that is definitely forgotten - My Chauffer. Starring Deborah Foreman, Howard Hesseman and Sam Jones from Flash Gordon, in the only other movie I ever saw him in besides Flash Gordon. Also features a very young Penn and Teller.

Tango and Cash is also a guilty favorite of mine. Kurt Russell in the courtroom is one of my all-time favorite scenes (and lines).

Anyone remember Private School (1983) with Phoebe Cates and Betsy Russell? The classic fast times scene got all of the love but Private School had its moments too.

Great choices, but my vote for best chick flick ever is When Harry met Sally.

This was a tame scene compared to the others, there's a scene with Betsy Russell that will turn you into Randy Marsh.

I remember the song, but never saw the movie.

Busey, Baldwin, Mr.T?

How have I missed this the last 42 years!?

Pepe Silvia 03-28-2025 10:26 PM

Vice Versa 1988 was a classic.

Might as well enter: Like Father, Like Son.

Dudly Moore and Kirk Cameron were both really good in it. Sean Astin was the best friend. LMAO

Motley Crue soundtrack. Kicked Ass.

Dudley Moore was always pretty great. He starred in a mostly overlooked movie called Crazy People about a guy having a nervous breakdown while working in the ad industry. His honest ads are gold.

“Jaguar. For men who’d like handjobs from beautiful women they hardly know.”

“Buy Volvos. They’re boxy, but they’re good.”

“The Freak. This movie won’t only scare you. It will **** you up for life.”

Haha. That was on HBO 150 times a month back in the day.

Bill Maher is in there too. 😝

I almost did but went with Vice Versa instead because more people saw it. I saw both and liked both. ROFL

She's got some heat for sure. Same woman as Jeff Goldblums ex-wife on Independence Day.
