After enjoying their first-round playoff bye week, the No. 1 seed Kansas City Chiefs will be back in action on Saturday for a divisional round date with the No. 4 seed Houston Texans.

Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs' offense will need a strong showing to overcome Houston's defense, which intercepted Justin Herbert four times in the wild-card round.

While they won't have No. 1 wide receiver Rashee Rice this weekend — out since Sept. 29 after suffering a serious knee injury in Week 4 — the tiniest sliver of hope remains that the 24-year-old star could return for the Super Bowl on Feb. 9, should the Chiefs make it for the third consecutive season.

Rice shared a 41-second progress video on his Instagram story on Monday while rehabbing his knee at the Chiefs facilities. In it, he can be seen doing weighted single-leg squats, indicating substantial progress in his journey back to the field.

Rice had surgery to repair his injured LCL and hamstring tendon on Oct. 8 with the expectation that his 2024 season would be over.

Despite some initial optimism from NFL insiders Adam Schefter and Ian Rapoport, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said after the surgery that Rice's recovery timeline would track pretty closely to that of a player who tore their ACL — typically around nine months.

"It's probably the same result, though, as you'd get time-wise for an ACL," Reid told reporters. "It takes a while for that to come back."

Still, the video raises the question: Just how realistic is the chance of Rice being ready to go by the second week of February? Don't hold your breath.

At the very least, the team would need to open up a 21-day practice window for Rice, who was placed on injured reserve on Oct. 3. The latest Kansas City could make that move and still have a chance to activate Rice for Super Bowl Sunday would be this Sunday, Jan. 19.

Plus, according to former Chiefs Super Bowl champion and All-Pro offensive tackle Mitchell Schwartz on X, "Yes single leg squats means he’s 4 weeks away from being able to do everything a WR needs to do on the field and also get hit by defenders."

Even if Schwartz's informed perspective held true, Rice's return to live action is all but sure to come post-Super Bowl and later into the team's offseason program.

Hammock Parties 01-16-2025 02:13 PM

Damn. Feels like he missed being ready for the Super Bowl by 2-3 weeks.

Bl00dyBizkitz 01-16-2025 02:13 PM

Ain't happening.

O.city 01-16-2025 02:22 PM

Nah, not happening nor should they push it.

Just get him ready for 2025 opening night banner raising.

No chance.

Watson doesn't really present a risk of re-injury any greater than being healthy would have.

That ain't the case with Rice.

He's gone until summer - accept it.

UteChief 01-16-2025 02:24 PM

Think Rice has told Mahomes the next pic he throws, you’re on your own?

Lmao. Schwartz. Was being sarcastic. He was mocking Brad Henson on twitter. Henson posted Rices video and mentioned a possible SB return

That’s funny Lucas’s embarrassed himself like that

Certainly seems like he'll be okay for next season!

I'm amazed that anyone could read that and not realize it's sarcasm immediately.

That would break people if he came back for the SB.

there was a rumor like a month ago that he could possibly be ready for the Superbowl if we made it.

I don't believe it though

carcosa 01-28-2025 10:25 PM

20 CATCHES 300 YARDS 6 TOUCHDOWNS IMHO

TinyEvel 01-28-2025 10:47 PM

heck, maybe line him up wide on one of those electric Rascal scooters and let him roll for five yards just to draw a guy away from Kelce.

smithandrew051 01-28-2025 10:48 PM

Oh hell yeah

Hammock Parties 01-28-2025 10:58 PM

man i know it's green, but tons of shots of the LIX logo look red and gold

LIX gear gonna be in HIGH demand for chiefs fans if we win

comochiefsfan 01-28-2025 11:02 PM

Scorching hot take here, but i'm not sure i'd want to activate him even if he was cleared.

A guy who barely played all season trying to get into game shape and getting his first live reps in months in the Super Bowl kind of seems like a recipe for disaster.

Miscommunication on a route or having a ball bounce off his hands for an INT kind of deal where he makes an error simply due to being rusty.

Idk, He almost certainly isn't playing regardless but I would just ride with the guys that got us here at this point and save Rashee for the start of next season.

BossChief 01-28-2025 11:03 PM

Not sure the juice would be worth the squeeze. The risk of re-injury very likely outweighs the difference what he would currently offer the team over what Worthy, Brown, JuJu and Hopkins already do.

But I can’t lie. I’d be excited as hell if it were announced that they are opening the practice window and he somehow found a way to get in the rotation and provided another spark to the offense.

Deberg_1990 01-28-2025 11:05 PM

He ain’t playing. And if he did play:

2 catches for 13 yards.

RedinTexas 01-29-2025 07:13 AM

As long as he wouldn't be bumping someone else off the roster that we really need, I'd be ok with it. If he did nothing else but run the the Philly DBs really hard, he'd be accomplishing something for the team. He'd be helping to keep the other receivers legs a little fresher.

Why Not? 01-29-2025 07:19 AM

I mean, Justyn Ross was on the active roster so he’d just take his place. I’d say it’s a long shot but even having him out there as a decoy would be good.

Couch-Potato 01-29-2025 07:52 AM

A Rashee Rice TD to win the Super Bowl!? lol That’d be fun, but I’d be just as stoke if it were Justyn Ross.

He better not. We want Kelce to break all of Rice’s (Jerry) playoff records, especially if this is his ends up being his last playoff game.

Red Dawg 01-29-2025 09:00 AM

Rice & Worthy together next year warms the heart with Kelce fading whether he's still here or not. I'd love Hollywood back as well if the price is right.

That's not what happened, I was there. The clip ended just before he got into the passenger seat of a car he rented with his homeboys and the guy in grey shorts then crashed into a bunch of compensation vultures at 119mph.

I hope you’re right. A great deal of his game is playing like he’s shot out of a ****ing cannon. Really hope this injury didn’t negatively impact his explosion or willingness to plant his feet and go.

This was my worry. Rashee doesn't have that long blazing 4.3 speed but his initial burst is about as fast as anyone in the league. So I hope that isn't something he lost with that knee. That was what made him special.
