It's a gristle burger, more chunky bits of gristle than beef. They top it all off with no seasoning except the gristle grease they never scrape off the flattop.

Is Backyard Burger still around? I used to enjoy their burgers and waffle fries back in the early 2000s, but all of the stores near us (Olathe/OP) went out of business years ago.

I'd say the BEST I've had on the list is Five Guys.
Culver's is also pretty solid.


My Favorite changes over the years, but currently it's Wendy's.
Because it's cheaper, has a drive-through, is rarely busy, and is super close to my home and work.


Whataburger coming soon to MetroNorth, so that will be interesting.... I've not had it yet.

The local mom and pops are still better than any on this list and their not chains. Very few chains I can stand. I loved Whataburger in Texas and Oklahoma but the ones that have opens in KC area don't seem to have it down yet.

And sadly, two of my favorites in KC no longer exist... Swagger and Blanc Burgers (of course, Blanc would also cost you like $60).

Back in the day there was none better for me than Four Winds in Cusseta, Ga.

Ranger burger, pound of meat, bacon, cheese, lettuce, tomato and onion with fries and a sweet tea for $5.25.

Even further back in the day it was Calvin's Hamburger Haven in Wichita, Ks. Way back when it was in a old shack on the corner of Harry and Seneca.

Nothing compares now as I can make anything better than I can order.

Similar in quality and taste to Dairy Queen, not bad but not too special. Has pretty good shakes. They are mainly in Utah and Idaho I think, I have one about three miles up the road from me.

Yeah, loved everything about it. Good craft beer list and I think they had a lot of uncommon soda bottles. Great burgers, including a blue cheese stuffed burger that was really damn good, and a rib meat stuffed burger. :drool: They had adult milkshakes, too.

Think I only went a handful of times as it was a bit of a drive for me and of course a bit pricey after having all of the above.

Steak and Shake checks all the boxes. It wins.

That blue cheese stuffed burger was dangerous. Had to let it cool for a bit else that first bite = seared face/lips/tongue.

They had killer truffle fries and onion rings as well. Man, that place was the tits.

I completely forgot about Blanc Burgers somehow. That blue cheese stuffed burger was so good. I remember those miniature shopping carts they served the fries in as well. Definitely pricey but so worth it.

I liked Freddy's Patty Melt till they went to crap during the pandemic and have not rebounded.

Agreed. Their fries were even good. And they came in that little metal shopping cart container. The atmosphere was always great. The price was the only real drawback.

I like that Whataburger is open 24 hours and you can sit inside at 4 a.m.

The Patty Melt is so freaking good.

I understand the love of five guys, I truly do, but I chose in n out. Five guys is great, but in n out just has some weird attraction to me that I just enjoy. Five guys I feel like I just ate an entire cow. In n out, the animal fries, the entire experience I just find more enjoyable BUT I’ll say the quality of five guys is hard to beat and that’s coming from a guy who lives in California and has an abundance of in n out chains. Even writing this I may even want to change back to five guys because my mouth is watering, it’s that close

I went to a five guys late at night (early on in my five guys experience) I hated it. Young college kid cooking it, zero care…. Never went back there.. I go to a few other locations that like I said, have adults cooking it, and I get a ton of toppings, man it’s pretty damn good.

I like 5 guys, but it's mainly because of their fries. I don't dislike their burgers, its not like they are in n out boring but they aren't great. They need bacon.

I don't see how Burger King is still in business. I pass by a couple of them a few times a week and the lots are always empty. Maybe one car in drive thru.

For me, Burger King brings me the worst post-meal symptoms.

On the bright side, I think they do offer value with some of their low end items.

I used to go to Fuddruckers and get their ribeye steak sandwich.

With some mayo, mushrooms, and some pico, it was the best sandwich I have ever had, especially if the steak was cooked to a good medium rare.

It's OK from what I remember. I haven't been to one in years because they are too busy. I won't wait in a long line for fast food. But from what I remember, the burgers themselves were better than any other fast food place. You had to get something on those fries though. Animal style or forget about it.

Add in the atmosphere of the store (so loud they can't hear you order if you scream at them from 2 feet away) and it's just not a good experience at all.

I went with Culver’s. I just had Freddy’s for the first time last year when I was in MO. It was really damn good, like Steak n Shake should be/used to be. If I’d have had a few more of their burgers I may have been swayed. But I’m sticking with Culver’s.

I've been to a few 5's in Tulsa and OKC and they are pretty quiet.

The music is loud, the exhaust fans are louder, and the customers are forced to up the volume to overcome it, making it just over the top.

Burger King does pretty well in that respect. A place like Wendy's leans too heavily on sauces and extras.

Very serious. I like their breakfast, their fries, nuggets. That's what I meant by overall. Of course their burgers can't touch these other chains.

Besides, it doesn't matter. Sooner or later it all turns to shit anyway.

I've found BK, Carl's Jr., and Wendy's to be wildly inconsistent from store-to-store.

Freddy's and 5 Guys have always been on point.

Freddy's cheeseburger with extra pickles for me. I love those crunchy steak bits.

Freddy’s is the best true fast food drive thru burger for me. And their shoestring fries and fry sauce are also great. I like Red Robin for a casual burger place as well.

But Wendy’s has by far the best value menu. The 4 for $4 is unbeatable and the $5 bag gets you a bit more fries and bigger sandwich and still a very good value.
