This is cool.
Harvesting deer or wild pigs every year doesn’t bother me. I will admit the thought of doing the same to an animal I’ve raised would be difficult. Maybe after the first few it’d be no issue, but I grow quite fond of my pets. |
I was thinking about getting some goats for our business property to help clear some land that needs to be kept clear and it is hard to use equipment on. Someone posted this cool looking little guy and I would of scooped him up had I seen him a little bit sooner. He was gone in just a few minutes of him being posted.

A few months ago, they brought a bunch of goats down to the Riverfront area in KC, to clear poison ivy and other overgrowth. Apparently, a bunch of them got loose, and they've been roaming around the Riverfront ever since. Just head down and find a few...

I've never fed a goat, looks like fun.

As of today... I'm starting them on a thrice daily schedule. 8AM, 4PM, Midnight It is a little early for this but I don't have much of a choice because there are 2 days this week where I need to be somewhere for 8 hours and they aren't gonna get to eat so trying to acclimate them to this a touch earlier than I normally would. |

Philly and Hoshi are 6 weeks old. Philly weighs 11.5lbs and Hoshi weighs 10lbs.
Grilled Cheese is 3 weeks old now and weighs 7lbs. They are starting to spend half days in the goat pen with the big girls and, damn, I am glad for it because I am tired of having to clean out the pen. The pen that lives in the kitchen because I don't have another space where it will fit easily. Had to go do my side-gig today so they spent the entire day outside and they were VERY happy to see me.
Goat babies chasing me!
|
What happened to parting out old wrecks? Goats running around just isn't as exciting:D
|
Serious question… why do farms keep goats? Do you eat them? Do they cut the grass? I get cows, horses, and chickens utility, but are goats just for fun or do they serve a purpose?

Yeah I'm curious why you chose goats over more traditional stock like chickens or pigs, Janx
I know some people like goat meat/milk, but wouldn't something more traditional be more profitable? I'm a huge fan the Homestead Rescue tv show, and I'm always surprised when the homesteaders prefer goats over other options |

1) An cow weighs 600 (miniature) to 2,200 (standard) pounds while an angry Myotonic goat weighs 150 pounds. I can tank a sneak attack from an angry goat far better than I could a cow. Especially as I'm out here, basically, on my own now. 2) Myotonic goats will produce an equal amount of meat to cows (meat to bone ratio) on 2/3rds of the food... so it costs substantially less to keep goats than cows. 3) I have the ability to grow a lot of my own food here but meat based protein is skyrocketing in price so I wanted to be able to be more self sustainable. Since these are meat goats... they meet my needs. 4) They actually do keep my lawn down. I mowed twice all of last year and it was glorious. 5) Mine faint... and it is highly amusing. 6) Goat meat, price per pound, fetches a bit more than cows do at auction. 7) Grew up eating goat and it isn't exactly the easiest meat to find short of going to a specialty butcher... where you will pay specialty butcher prices. |
I honestly had no idea there was such a demand for goat meat/milk in America, always knew there was a niche but didn't think it was that lucrative
Always thought chickens, eggs and whatever else sold better If you personally enjoy goat meat it definitely makes more sense, but I've never had it... what would you compare it to, lamb maybe? |

I've kept meat breed chickens but they are, to me, a far bigger headache than they are worth. Dare I say that slaughter day on my last batch of chickens led to a lot of release of hostility towards them and I was happy to do it. I don't have the patience for egg layers. Gotta keep them bitches around for almost a year before you even see an egg. I also disliked the confrontational nature of roosters and honestly felt bad putting my foot into them like I'm taking a corner kick in soccer. That may seem contradictory to my last statement but I did not want to injure an animal that was going to keep living. I don't **** with milk goats because I have absolutely no desire to spend 2-3 hours of my mornings squeezing goat tits. That said... goat milk is an excellent option for people who are lactose intolerant. In fact, back in the day, some people would feed their human babies directly from goats because they were frightened by a spread of transferable diseases from "wet nurses". Not that I have kids of my own but... the quality of the milk is excellent for people. https://i.imgur.com/oLJS7DV.png https://www.researchgate.net/publica...to-C-Teich.png https://www.mediastorehouse.com.au/p...96119.jpg.webp |

Another two babies born at 9PM tonight. Another first time momma that had no ****ing clue what to do with the babies.
Two more bottle babies living with me in the house. One boy (Meatball) and one girl (Nyota). Pics later when I snag them for their next feeding. |
Anyone ever been to Beatty Nevada? Apparently they just have donkeys and goats that roam around town.

Tonight was ROUGH.
One of my mommas is heavily pregnant and couldn't get the kid out. Dude hung out her back end for 5 minutes and she could not, for the life of her, get him out. I burst the sack and felt for a bite reflex... which I thankfully got. I grabbed onto him and when she pushed I lightly pulled. Meatloaf was born at 9:30PM. Momma was still struggling for 15 minutes and I see another sack appear. I give her some time and by now she is exhausted and lies down. I give her some more time but 15 minutes later and the sack is only playing peekaboo from her back end. I get her back up and take a look... ****ing hooves, not a head. I try to get the hooves back in and pull the head forward but, instead, the head slips out with the hooves. At this point I don't really have a choice so I hold on to the baby and momma grunts and walks away. Baby did not survive. Spoiler below not for the squeamish.
Spoiler!
Momma is out there still looking huge but not actively pushing anything so I don't know if there is a third one in there she doesn't have the energy to push out or what the **** is happening with her. I've basically worked 18 hour days the past 4 weeks and 16 hour days the 4 weeks before that. I'm ****ing exhausted and spent. |

Keeping this guy. He is unrelated to 90% of the does here so he has plenty of prospects for breeding come December.

The three latest babies that had to be brought in are about 2 weeks old now and started spending half days outside as of today. They will spend half days out there for the next week, sleeping inside the house, before going outside full time and finally restoring peace in the house. The count, so far, for the year stands at 5 boys / 3 girls with 4 of them being retained. I may send Darry (the only non fainter, he is a Nigerian Dwarf) to Freezer Camp and may retain Philly as the wether. |
We never named our food.

Panini, Reuben, Egg McMuffin, Sausage McMuffin, Tuna Fish, Philly, Grilled Cheese, Meatball, Pastrami and Swiss on Rye (Pastrami for short) are all bucks going to freezer camp this year. Can you spot the naming structure? It only serves to reinforce what they are on the homestead. |
That tail was wagging like the happiest dog ever
It'd be tough to kill that animal for food |
Near Cherokee North Carolina they have some bar thing called Goats on the Roof.
And there are indeed goats on the roof. |

I'll take care of them and nurse them when they are sick but I still know what their purpose here is so I don't get too attached. I've had to cull goats that got overly sick and my attachment to them ****ed me up for what I had to do. |

13 babies so far this year with 1 more momma left to give birth (assuming I don't have any surprises)
https://i.imgur.com/cUwTTyZ.png I had an inordinate number of bottle babies this year due to several first time moms that abandoned their babies. I did have two experienced moms abandon babies. One because it was in the middle of a snow storm and it didn't thrive and I believe the other one abandoned because another doe came up and cleaned the babies for her. She no longer recognized them. I have, as of today, 13 babies on the ground safe and sound. 6 did not survive (4 in snow banks and I didn't catch them in time, 1 died during birth, 1 was smothered trying to keep warm). I had 8 bottle babies... 5 of which I am still bottle feeding. 3 of them have 3 weeks of bottle left. The other two have 6 weeks of bottle feeding left.
