No shocker, but food for me. I struggle.

Caffeine is another one.

I've been a smoker off and on through the years, but never really felt like I was addicted, I just enjoyed smoking. I would smoke for 3-4 months and then quit for 6 without any issue, like I'd get bored with it. When my allergies got really bad in my move to SC and the AL, I quit for good and never looked back.

Euphoria like you couldn't imagine. I'm damn lucky I'm not dead knowing what I know now. I just thank the Lord I never graduated beyond hydro and the occasional oxycodone.

Some days I still miss it, but I've come a long way to being drug free. I'm not willing to jeopardize that.

Benzo withdrawl was the ****ing worst thing I've ever been through, btw. Even coming off a 1mg daily klonipin dose was hell. I don't know how people who take large doses of benzos ever quit.

Thanks Smoke. That's pretty heavy.

This one me struck me. My main goal, every day, is to show my Management either a success or some sort of visibility that reminds them I know what I'm doing. I get lots of positive feedback, which really drives me.

And it's a great thrill. Great medicine for what ails ya.

I'm on a new gig now and I still use the same formula but this group gives zero feedback. Unless you ****ed up. It's very disheartening for me. I don't give 110% anymore.

Quality, timely feedback is so important. Lots of managers don't know this; they often ignore high performers because they don't think they need it. Sad, really.

Caffeine withdrawal is a b****. I tried giving up caffeine once and it was almost impossible in fact it became impossible. Had a couple of pretty bad headaches the first few days and I can work my way down from them. Then about a week later I got nauseous and thought I was getting sick. Found an article that said it was caffeine withdrawal. My wife also said that I was too grumpy and that I needed caffeine. Bought me a 20 oz dew. So she is the enabler.

Yeah, one of my fave things about doing the work I do (remodeling work) is seeing people happy with the finished product I give them. Having them call or text after completing a job to say they are very happy with the way the job turned out is second only to a monetary showing of their happiness.

displacedinMN 06-19-2016 08:01 AM

Think about how many people today are addicted to their f******* phones, or facebook.

It will become an epidemic.
I see kids that go into withdrawal if they do not look at their phones.

I'm the same way.

I go to the gym all the time but I don't even like it.

I play video games maybe 2 hours per week. I don't watch television outside of live sports..

Ah, as I was typing I figured it out- NFL football. Every Sunday, all Sunday. I watch. Then I watch on Monday and then I watch in Thursday. Between time I'm constantly on NFL.com and Chiefsplanet discussing it.

I've literally quit jobs because they wouldn't allow me to have Sundays off.

Tomatoes, salsa, specifically.

I had a stomach ailment a few years back in which I had to take a PrevPac and go six months without caffeine, alcohol, citrus and tomatoes.

I don't drink sugary soft drinks, ever, so that was easy. I don't drink coffee but I do drink iced tea. That was kind of tough at first. Dropping alcohol? No problem. Sometimes I drank club soda but most of the time I stuck with water.

But what was killing me, I mean, absolutely killing me was no tomatoes.

I make salsa and purchase salsa from the local Mexican marts. Whether it's homemade pico, chipotle or molcajete salsa, I put it on nearly everything, from scrambled eggs to, of course, tacos, burritos, grilled fish, in black beans & rice and LOVE chips and salsa. I also put grape tomatoes in my salads and tomatoes on the occasional deli or chicken sandwich and burgers. Cholula on a breakfast burrito is a must, otherwise, why eat a breakfast burrito?

No tomatoes was the most difficult thing I've ever had to stop. Fortunately (or unfortunately), none of the above were causing the issue so after six months, it was business as usual.

Thankfully.

RunKC 06-19-2016 05:11 PM

I don't know how people function without caffiene, no matter how much rest you've had.
I have a can of coke once every 10 or so days, but coffee is a daily thing for me.

That's by far my biggest addiction. Also, I would imagine sugar is another big addiction for many people.

Um, maybe I'll add myself to that list as well. My wife calls me a tomato slut.

I grow my own tomatoes most of the year (3 different varieties this year). I eat salsa every day on something and make my own. I have a salad every day and eat grape/cherry tomatoes on it every time. Sometimes after a salad I'll just slice a tomato and eat it as well. I top any sandwich and burger with a tomato. I love having Spicy V8 juice in a glass while watching TV at night. I love making Blood Maria's and Micheladas, extra heavy on the tomato juice.

I have a friend at work who cannot eat tomatoes due to a disease. I honestly don't think I could do it.

I just ate a slice with a bit of green on it. Got some huge red slicing tomatoes at the store but didn't look perfectly ripe. Was still ok by me. :D

I've found that the best tomatoes come from California if you are buying in the store. My home grown ones are obviously the best but this heat makes growing them for 4 months here impossible.

Long story short; their economy is agriculture so this law was put into place some time ago to protect the industry. So no cutting into that as it would sink their economy. They raid gardens worse than illegal pot grows here. Their shortage of Avocado's is about to trigger a gang war in the black market.

I must be lucky then, I found physical caffeine withdrawals to be very mild. Only headaches for the 1st few days then I was fine except for just being normal and tired. I was drinking 3 monster energy drinks a day at one point, which is about 750mgs of caffeine per day. Here's a weird one. I have a hard time going to sleep in silence. I started listening to music or talk with earbuds or a pillow speaker many years ago so I wouldn't have to hear whatever sitcom my wife would watch when she went to bed. Now the wife's gone but I can't go back to silence. Lately I've listened to podcasts at bedtime but I usually fall asleep so fast I never remember what was said the next morning.

I used to just put on the Military Channel in the background. Those documentary voices drum you right to sleep. I put a nice fish tank in my room too with cool lighting and such. Like a live lava lamp. That puts me to sleep too.

MASH for me. For many years it was on at 10:30 every night around here. Although, when I was a kid it was Johnny Carson. Didn't have much supervision when I was growing up so pretty much every night since I was 5 or 6 I would stay up late and fall asleep watching the Tonight Show. I have a real hard time going to sleep without some background noise. Not just any noise, it has to be voices, not too loud , not too quite. Most TV shows will do but I think the familiarity of MASH is why it works best.

Oh yea, being left alone with nothing but my own thoughts makes it real hard to fall asleep. My mind just goes and goes and goes.

Frosty 06-20-2016 10:47 AM

Man, I can't sleep with any music or talking at all. If it's low enough to just be a murmur, my brain goes nuts trying to make it out. If it's louder, I just end up listening to it instead of sleeping. White noise is the trick for me, in the form of a loud box fan.

I can't do talking or light from the TV. I have a standing fan for white noise. Turn out every little light, even the directv receiver. Need it to be pitch black and cold. Keep the AC cranked and have black out curtains. White noise is the real trick though. Very hard for me to sleep without it.

Ok I found mine.

I have to sleep with a fan, or white noise (99.9% fan). Which usually means I take a fan with me when we travel. At home it's a huge, loud, thundering box fan. I CANNOT sleep without white noise.

I don't need white noise at all, but maybe it's because tinnitus provides all that I need.

The television keeps my mind off of the crickets that are always there.

I don't think I could handle tinnitus. I think I'd rather be deaf.

The weird thing is that I don't know if I have it or if it's normal. If I'm sitting alone and it's reasonably quiet, I just hear a high-pitched whine. It's quite noticeable if I think about it, but I can tune it out without any effort. Is that tinnitus or is that just normal ears?

That's tinnitus. The presence of noise without an external source. Something like 1-12 adults has it, most being over 60 years old.

Is your hearing normal? Have you had it tested?

I've had it tested and for the most part my hearing is normal other than a few frequencies. I never asked about the whine because it's always been there. It's kind of loud if I sit and listen to it (kind of like ringing ears after a rock concert), but again it's really easy to tune out, especially if there's any other noise present.

The weird thing is that I actively avoid noise. I've heard that it can happen if you're around loud noise a lot, but I've never had a lot of exposure to loud noise.

Be careful with earbuds while jogging. The SPL of those things can be devastating and definitely can cause hearing damage.

That's like drinking Vodka because beer has too many calories

There isn't great treatment and most people do what you do, tune it out.

Definitely. My generation especially. So many idiots blasting their earbuds. We tested our class in graduate school and a good 10/40 people were already showing signs of high frequency hearing loss which is common with listening to music too loud. If other people can hear your music, it's too loud.

I can't stand the sound of earbuds. Even though I look like a dinosaur, if I'm listen to music on a portable device, I use mini-headphones.

My ears are my life.

As our mine!

I like headphones as well but too bulky at the gym, so I use earbuds there. I keep the volume very low.

Glad you are looking out for your ears. Too many people take their hearing for granted until it's too late.

I kind of worry about that, because I spend about 3 or 4 hours a week running with those things. I try to keep it turned down to a reasonable level, but even at a reasonable level it feels like that's noise right on my eardrums.
