As for a football, probably about 50 yards. Being able to throw a good slider makes for having a tight spiral. Most people should be able to throw 30 yds. Its the distance between bases in baseball... for god's sake. |
A good strong throwing shoulder/arm is something your born with or not...you can only "teach/train" so much, the rest is god-given. You can't teach someone to throw it 50 yards if it's just not in them. That being said, I used to throw a baseball in the upper 70's (nothing special) and could only throw a football 35-40 yards at best.

Regardless...you either have the "hose" or you don't. If a guy has decent mechanics and can only throw a football 30 yards you can probably only teach him to throw it another 5 yards or so IMO, you can't teach him to throw it 50-60yards. You hear of some big league baseball players improving their mechanics and getting another 5-10 mph on their fastball but it was already in the upper 80's or so before that. |
This thread reminds me of one I had several years ago about golf. At the time, not one pro golfer averaged 300 yds off the tee. But this site had 25-30 who could do it. Some of them with range balls.
|
I found my strength in my mid 20's when I played right field in slow pitch softball. I'm left handed and I could throw a runner out going from first to third base better than anybody in our county. I could throw a laser to third base because of the angle and being left handed, but I was just normal throwing to home plate. Now I concentrate on getting speed and turn on my bowling ball and I can still get a lot of zip on it when I want to. When it comes to throwing a football I could probably reach 50 yards with a good warmup. Your shoulder is definitely where the distance comes from.

Could be your grip. Instead of putting your fingertips on the laces, try putting your thumb on it. Helps for guys with smaller hands. |

My technique is pretty good, plus it depends on the football, and feeling it out, so that it will spin properly. Not all footballs are created equally. |

That being said... I can't hit a golfball for shit.
|
I play some qb and get away with throwing 40 yards.. Mind you on a good day i can throw between 45-50..
From my experience it comes down to technique and the speed of which you can move your arm.. Skinny guys can often throw far because they dont have much mass to carry, hence a faster thus further throw... |

Yeah, an unusual percentage of guys here also seem to go anywhere from 6'2 240 to 6'5 260. |

I'm going to guess I'm in the 30 yard range. The sad thing is that I think my wife when she was younger was in the 40 yard range, my BiL where catching balls from her, with us taking turns and both of our arms were worn out before hers.
Skip - My longest drive to date is 266 yards, but I only started last year. |
ok, I was real good at tee-ball, just incredible.

I tested it tonight at practice....57-58 yds (3rd try.) FTR, with absolutely NO accuracy whatsoever though.

I can, however, hit my 3 wood a fair piece, though. Last weekend I drove the green on a short par 4 290 yard hole with the 3 wood. I can consistently knock my 3 wood about 255-260 yards. I have no idea how far I can throw a FB anymore (probably less than 40 yards). |

I know how to throw a football. |
Heres another question... How far can you kick a field goal? My record is 45 yards. Made it with plenty of room to spare. But I havent kicked it better than that yet. Im not much of a kicker.

Chiefsplanet has lost a total of 10 pounds now from people going outside and trying to throw the ball as far as they can. gochiefs might be the next todd haley.
|
I could probably toss the rock 40 yards, maybe. Once would be it, arm would probably dislocate.
|
I seriously don't understand the people questioning this. 55 yards isn't a problem at all.

I wish I could join the stuff CP does outside of the board...Living in Colorado makes that extremely difficult. It would be fun to play some flag football with some of you guys. Just to see what you got.

We will start playing tackle football here in a few weeks in the northland.. My friends have been practicing at Macken park, they take it way to serious and get tired of getting beat by the Iraqi team.. |

I can throw a tight spiral, but I don't know how to throw a football? That doesn't make much sense to me. |

Yes, it wouldnt make sense to you. Throwing a spiral is a wrist thing... getting distance on it ... is a hip/lower body thing. Highly doubtful you would ever be athletic enough to combine the 2. |

It's absolutely hilarious how many people throw it 55+. That cracks me up. I'll bet if all 10,000 users from this website showed up and threw a football we wouldn't see 14 who could throw more than 55 yards.
