Amps are what matter

Try giving it a jump start first. Easiest thing to do before you do anything else. Neighbor/friend have any? $10 for a set at harbor freight and they come in handy when needed.

12.3 volts during cranking? I'm thinking your battery reader would give cranking amps? I recall a battery I had before was reading 12V but was still a bad battery due to low cranking amps.

Would the radio, lights etc still come on with a bad battery?

My mechanic friend just texted back he thinks it's a starter solenoid

The standing voltage can be fine but CCA is what you need to start the vehicle.

Clean your connections with sand paper, check the fluids (water) in the battery and take it for a good run then hope for the best.

Possible. They don't require the amount of power the starter does.

We just pounded on Ford solenoids.

Sometimes the bendix in a Ford starter will get stuck, and banging on it will free it up. I used to keep a metal pole in the back of my Mercury Bobcat that purpose.

Take battery off, go to auto parts store, have it tested. If it comes back good, then you will need to look at your starter. Will probably need to replace it, if you feel up to it take off your starter and take it to the parts store at the same time as the battery. They will test both

Yes.

Clean the terminals and the post at the battery with a wire brush. Make sure their tight. Use rubber gloves or wash hands afterwards.

If the truck started again then it’s most likely not the battery and could be intermittent because of corroded terminals, solenoid, or bad starter connection.

A classic car is an older automobile; the exact definition varies around the world. The common theme is of an older car with enough historical interest to be collectable and worth preserving or restoring rather than scrapping. Cars 20 years and older typically fall into the classic class.

I’d rather have a 97 Ranger than a Murano.

No joke.

I had a Ranger same year as part of my flower shops. Great little truck. Drove that sucker all over CA. N and S.
