On a bitterly cold 8 degree day, the Chiefs rode FB Wendall Hayes' 19 carries for 104 yards to a win, producing 185 total rushing yards. Hayes added another 55 yards receiving, and the Chiefs' defense forced three turnovers.

September 2, 1979 - Chiefs 14, Colts 0

On opening day, the Chiefs came out with a win. Despite having only 45 net yards passing, the Chiefs won with a strong rushing game at 166 yards, with Ted McKnight scoring twice on runs of 1 yard and 70 yards. The defense registered 4 sacks and 2 turnovers, and knocked QB Bert Jones out of the game. The Colts committed 14 penalties.

The Chiefs and Colts played twice in 1979, and the Chiefs swept the series. In the second meeting, the Chiefs continued to have trouble passing with only 83 net yards, but rushed 50 times for 219 yards. The defense shut down the Colts' running game and forced 4 turnovers, including two interceptions by Gary Barbaro. Jan Stenerud kicked a 43-yard game-winning field goal in the fourth quarter.
