I've been reading The Persian Puzzle: The Conflict Between Iran and America by Kenneth Pollack. In the first couple chapters it discusses the history of Iran.

I don't know if I've ever read a sadder history of a country. The history of Iran is extremely repetitive. It'd take me three hands to count the number of times the people of the country have been slaughtered.
