Everything about Luke Skywalker in this movie was done irresponsibly wrong.

Disney shit all over the SWU.

Kylo Ren is the worst character since Jar Jar Binks.

FYP but everything else you said is spot on.

She was a bad character but in terms of Kylo Ren's importance in the SWU, IMO he gets that nod. If they didn't put Rose in the next installment, I don't think anyone would really notice.

Kylo Ren meanwhile is the worst major villain that I've seen in any movie in quite some time.

I've said this before, but we really didn't need another Hayden Christensen, and that's precisely what Kylo Ren's character is.

But ultimately I'm at a C+ at best on this movie. And the more of pondered on it, the less I've liked it. I'm sure any particular quibble I have has been discussed to this point so I have very little new to add there.

But the serious, major takeaway I had from this movie is simple - they just turned the Original Trilogy into a prequel for this trilogy. That's it. That is the height of hubris and raw arrogance by Disney/Johnson, IMO.

"Y'know that beloved set of movies? The movies that were so well received by fans that this particular series exists in the first place? **** 'em. We got our own stuff to do here..."

It's an obvious, conscious decision by Disney and Johnson. It's an attempt to re-boot without re-booting and rather than actually closing a loop, they just discarded its remnants so they could limp this thing along for another 20 years and make a boatload of money out of it. And they did it using the energy created by the thing they chose to discard.

The rest of the quibbles over the particular plot devices are going to deal with the whole 'It's space wizards, lighten up' argument. But taking the thing that made all this possible and treating it as a second class citizen so you can forge your own path...just not a fan at all.

Empire - New Hope - Rogue 1 -- TFA - Jedi --- TLJ ------- Sith --- shit

I just don't feel any real need to re-watch this movie and have absolutely no enthusiasm for the next installment. And that's without any real preconceived notion as to where this movie should have gone.

That's why I said in my extended lament about this film that, "The challenge these writers were presented with was to grow the universe and present new, compelling stories. Good writers can accomplish that without sacrificing the meaning of the preceding stories in the process. Bad writers can't."

As you point out, they turned the entire OT into fodder instead of building upon it.

In your opinion, if Finn had just told Rose, "Hey, I know what this looks like, and thank you for seeing me as a hero, but right now I absolutely need to do this. I can't tell you why, but I need to." Do you think she would have believed him? Because I do, and it would have fit the situation and characters better (despite knowing nothing about Rose and just being handed a new character that is apparently integral to the story with no build up or emotional connection to- she obviously respects/admires/loves Finn and Co.).
If EVERYTHING relies on you getting off that ship, Rose Whoeverthe**** should not be able to stop him. Instead, he is a bumbling moron.

Luke allowed his Jedi powers and the defeat of the Empire to completely go to his head.

He was "Luke Skywalker, Jedi Master, hero and savior of the Republic", and he believed every word of it, which led to his downfall.

I don't think anyone wants to see that character onscreen.

Did Lucas write the story outlines we are seeing now? Or is all his creativity input done with the Star Wars films?

Finn is one of the worst, if not the worst, things about this trilogy. He's always a bumbling moron.

That is pretty true... Thinking a bit more about this, Finn was a ****ing janitor... in a universe where robots are seen countless times being janitors... He is so useless or stupid that the Empire felt he best served them as a replacement for a Roomba.

I'll agree that this Star Wars movie has flaws and the people that want to rank it as one of the worst ever might arguably have a point, but this blind seething rage towards TLJ makes me laugh.
