For that reason alone, the 3yrs/$46M rumor is even more believable... Chiefs would have to pay huge to outbid Chicago.

Still think it’s dumb to pay massive money to this dude to be our 3rd option on offense.

The Eagles had 1 strong receiver (Jeffrey) and TE (Ertz) and then filled out the rest of the roster with a bunch of good complementary players in Torrey Smith, Trey Burton, Nelson Agholor and Mack Hollins.

Conley and Ware fit that mold. Get another complimentary receiver in FA and the draft and let’s roll.

No doubt it would be overpaid, like most FAs... but again, if it is in fact 3 years, we’ll be out of that contract by the time we need to pay Mahomes, Kareem, or Tyreek (assuming they want to).

Overpaid is a word that shouldn't be thrown around without seeing the results. If they paid him 15-16M per year for 3 years, and he comes in and averages 1200Yds and 10 TDs a year, would it be overpaying still?

GMs pay these guys based on what they think the player is capable of. Weather they meet the expectations is another story.

If they’re pushing for Watkins, that doesn’t speak very well towards what they think Conley can do or where he is injury wise

Im not going to complain if they want to fill the offense with as much firepower as possible for our incoming gun slinging QB.

If one of the big FA receivers is signed by the Chiefs, I think Conley gets traded for peanuts or is cut outright.
There is more scheme upside with D. Robinson and I think they like Chesson for what he brings on specials. I would expect they find a cheap draft option to challenge for the slot position with Wilson and DAT likely gone.

Valid point.

Honestly, regardless of what he’s paid, I don’t think there will be near enough volume to go around for Watkins to absolutely shred it here. Kelce, Hill, and Hunt will simply take too many touches.

But at the same time, that’s exactly why I want Watkins. It would present defenses with issues that no other team can in terms of downfield threats. If Watkins is in a Chiefs uniform, that a lot of one on one coverage for those three to take advantage of. You can’t scheme a defense to stop all of those guys. You better have some dudes who can match up. I also think he’d be great for the scramble drill with Mahomes.

There’s no doubt that he’s going to cost more than most are comfortable with, but we’re talking about a chance to have one of the great offenses this league has seen in years. And the defense isn’t going to be bad either, I don’t care what anyone says. There is plenty of money to still add a lot there too through FA and the draft.

You will when Mahomes has 4 TD games that mean nothing bc they are L’s.

We desperately need to get 3-4 new players on defense, ideally 2 nice talents. Paying Watkins over $14 million this year sure limits that. I have a hard time seeing him wanting a 3 year deal unless it has a ton of gauranteed money in it.

O.city 03-12-2018 10:38 PM

Why? He can do 3 years now, then be a free agent again at 28 and max out again

O.city 03-12-2018 10:38 PM

And I doubt they pay him 14 million on the cap this year if they sign him

They absolutely can add talent on defense as well as Watkins. $27.2M in cap room right now, and loads beyond 2018. You give him the 3-year deal, let him go after that when it’s time to pay the other guys.

Conley was running drills at my gym today he looked fine

RunKC 03-12-2018 10:42 PM

Did you guys forget Robinson, Harris and Wilson going off when Mahomes was throwing it their way?

Hill, Kelce and Hunt is the best trio in the league. Look at what they did for Alex last year? Now imagine Keke Coutee filling Wilson’s role and a FA WR like Paul Richardson at a cheaper price so we can add more defense, which we kinda need.

The Chiefs are not going to solve their defensive problems solely in the draft, especially with no 1st rd pick.

It sucks but we don’t have that much money. We’ve got around $30 million and I don’t want to pay half of that for a receiver leaving us with little to fill defensive holes.

you could move some of his money forward, pay a portion as a signing bonus and move some cap hit over the next couple years so the cap number will be around 8-10 this year. the chiefs are projected to have like 70M next year right? They dont have to worry about paying Peters anymore, Mahomes has 4 years on his deal (with option) Hunt has 3 years, Hill has 2, Kelce is locked up, Berry is locked up, Houston is locked up. Who is the money going to the next 2 to 3 years? Might as well make this the most capable offense in the NFL and draft some young studs for the defense.

bigjosh 03-12-2018 10:44 PM

This team has more money to spend then you would think.

OTC says KC has $82.5M in 2019. Plus whatever gets rolled over. They could certainly bump some of that Watkins salary into ‘18 and ‘19 comfortably.
