Also, another one I was super into was Peaky Blinders.

Or more accurately, PEAKY ****IN BLIIIIIIIIIIIINDAS. As is how my brain reads those two words. :D

The production value on this is way better than I was expecting and goddamn if the characters aren't compelling with lots of twists and turns.

I'm in until the end.

This recommendation did NOT disappoint. Blew through 2 episodes with my wife last night and we are hooked. If American production companies will not give me content like this free from some kind of political lense with such an insanely high degree of polish, then I guess I'll be consuming a lot more Korean content. Show is great so far.

These are the next two new shows that I am 1000% not going to miss...

Always loved Cowboy Bebop and that looks ****īng nuts in the best possible way, but this next trailer is the big one for me...

That show could really be everything that Game of Thrones was for its first 5 years, if it's done well. Although I think the book series is too long to ever finish on TV. But The Eye of the World is a fantastic book that should make for some great viewing.

Yeah, I was super impressed with the production values. Acting, choreography, sets, and there are some really wide shots that cost money. There was one pretty significant continuity error, and there is some superhero type toughness in there, but other than that it was pretty great. By the time it all shook out, the twists were all out and I wanted to see how it played out. Sign of a good show.

Definitely takes you for a ride.

Baby Lee 10-28-2021 01:30 PM

Has anyone sampled 'Guilty Party?' It's a little intriguing, but not for dispositive reasons, so I'm looking for input.

The potential for satire is good, but could easily be butchered [to my tastes]. The prospect of ogling Miss Katie is nearly sufficient in itself, but she's also appearing to try to make a go as a real actress, as opposed to eye-candy. If it works, I'm amenable, but if it sucks, someone warn me.

This is eminently worth a check out, I thought I had recommended the first season, but I can't find it right now.

It's pretty much what you get a sense of from the trailer. An odd-duck NYer who has an eye for detail narrating some of his observations about city life.

Kind of a cross of Joe Pera Talks with You and Koyaanisqatsi. . .

I know there aren't a lot of dads in here my age with 6 and unders, but if you are and haven't watched this show, you best do so before I come over and make you do it clockwork orange style. Darn it this show is exceptional. I laugh a ton, sometimes it gets a little misty in the room, but it gives you an appreciation for what an important job parenting is. Sometimes when you are staring at your phone while you aren't engaging with your kids, Bandit (the dad) will really show you up and make you feel terrible. Because as a parent, we could always be doing better.

Wow, that looks really good. Gonna add this to my watchlist. Thanks BL.

Also I’m probably really late to the party on Gomorrah on HBO. We’re about half way through season 1, and holy shit it is really good and intense. It’s like a more serious Sopranos, but takes place in Rome. Been hard to stop at the e d of each episode cuz I wanna see what’s going to happen next.

Buehler445 11-27-2021 12:53 PM

So I picked up HBOMAX for a few months here, and finally got to watch White Lotus and Mare of Easttown.

White Lotus
White Lotus is some really excellent filmmaking. It doesn't try to get out over it's skis and tell some grandiose story. Nope. It's a bit of a character study on like 8 people over a week in a resort. The acting is all really good. There is a bit of a stretch in is this how these people would really react - but nothing cheesy. And the beginning line of "Oh we heard someone died. Yeah, they're loading the body on our plane" was really ****ing excellent. The whole ****ing time I was trying to figure out who was going to eat shit, and they did a great job of leaving it open.

Really had my ass hooked for no more than it was.

I listened to some interesting analysis about White Collar vs Blue Collar consequences to what happened that was really interesting, but I totally missed it upon the first watch.

Mare of Easttown
Mare was ****ing amazing. I'm probably going to rewatch it before I dump the subscription.

Top to bottom, really ****ing good. A little more aggressive in that it was a bigger story, but really, REALLY good.

Anyone that hasn't watched it. Do it.

I've been watching this and really enjoying it. It's Alive meets Lord of the Flies meets Mean Girls meets mid-90s references.

Finished season one of Gomorra on HBO last night. Holy shit, the show is ridiculously intense, the last 2 episodes of season one kept me from going to bed on time. Wanted to watch S2E1 but had to get up for work early. If you’re a fan of The Godfather, SoA, stuff like that it’s incredible so far.

Squid Games meets the Branch Dividians.

Oh. My. ****ing. God.

I had never heard of this show until this post. And I looked it up and gave it a shot.

There is nothing better in this world than finding a show you’ve never watched that has four amazing seasons and makes its way into your top 10 immediately.

Just finished the first season. This is one of the darkest, most intense shows I’ve ever watched. I’ve been watching the dubbed version and it’s strikingly good.

So thrilled to have three more seasons at my disposal.

For light, pointless shit you can put on in the background while you're doing other things, Ghosts on HBO Max is pretty good.

I tried the CBS version and it's not as good (too Americanized -- loses the dry wit of the British version) but the BBC version is pretty solid and not anything you have to pay real close attention to.

The girl from iZombie stars in the American version. Both are good for light sitcom stuff.

Is there a way to have it in Italian with subtitles...the overdubs are like Squid Games.

I've tried twice to get through episode one....does it start ruff then get better?

You seem emphatic but I havent connected to it...acting felt stiff.

It gets ridiculously good, at least to me. I connected with it fairly quick. But yeah I’d give it an episode or 2 more.

Yeah, I actually watched the first episode in Italian with subtitles. But then I realized if I'm going to get through 4 seasons of this show, I'm going to need to make it a bit less arduous of a journey where if I look down at my phone for 10 seconds I don't miss an important part of the story.

I've never really watched anything dubbed before - I always prefer subtitles - but I quickly got to the point where it seemed completely natural.

I would give it 3 episodes and if you're not into it, move on.

And CL, mid-way through season 2. I can't wait to catch up to that point!

Downton Abbey

This six season series on Netflix has me absolutely captivated.

The series takes place just over about a hundred years ago, a time period I find very interesting as my grandparents would have been young adults.

It is extremely well done with top rate actors and actresses and seemingly no expense spared.

I really enjoyed most of that show but it got a bit tedious at the end.

There's a new show called Gilded Age by the DT creator coming to HBO late next month that's basically the show transported to NY.

Interesting, thanks.

I am into season four now and it seems to have gotten over the hump a bit, but I can sense what you are talking about is coming.

I would rate it in the top 5 series I have enjoyed on Netflix and Amazon.

We are on Dish for the last few years, so we no longer get HBO. We had DTV for over 20 years but their attitude change became tiresome compared to when they were an independant company.

I checked into buying a couple HBO series and holy crap, $30 for one season.

The Starved Rock Murders on HBO Max is a good watch*

Its a 3 part documentary on the 1960 murders of 3 women in the state park. Its unique in the fact that its created by the son of the state prosecutor who put the killer away for life but there's some questions about his possible innocence. So there's a personal connection as he seeks out the truth, often times doubting the work of his own father and idol growing up.

Its not Steven Avery gripping, but its a good story and well made. Took like 10 years in the making. Every person featured in the documentary is a true character.

Fun fact, I had never heard of these murders until scrolling through HBO Max last night but during the pandemic the wife and I would drive down to Starved Rock every so often just to get out of the city for a day. We took a selfie in the canyon where the womens bodies were found. I'm sure there's a gazillion selfies taken there a year but its kind of ominous to look at the pic now.

EDIT - actually I saw the BFQoE clear back last January. I thought you had somehow already found the one soon to air for THIS year. So yeah, seen it, enjoyed it, fell a LITTLE infatuated with Oti Mabuse [if you haven't had the chance to see her on the British version of those dancing shows, that's her thing, she's the pro dancer who coaches the celebs, basically GBs version of Julianne Hough].

EDIT EDIT - here you go [I swear at :25 in, even SHAKIRA grabbed a notepad and started scribbling].

If you're a fan of Carr, his new show is I Literally Just Told You

There's just 3 eps out, but watch them in order, so you get acclimatized to the format in Ep1. Won't say more at the moment

Episodes streamed on youtube behind spoiler

Taskmaster is also a good Brit show. Would I lie to you is hilarious. Cw is doing an American version but since it's cw it'll probably be crap.

Just finished season 2 of Gomorrah, it was great. Great show but I think I'm pretty much done with the show, it's just too intense, dark, and violent. 2 seasons is enough for me.

I recommend it if you are into that stuff, it's the real deal.

KCUnited 01-01-2022 04:42 PM

I tried an episode of Gomorrah dubbed in English and just couldn't make it through. I really wanted to with 3.5 more seasons left to go, but it turned into an immediate TNT level show with those English voiceovers.

Going to power through with the subtitles because its that good of a show thus far.

Yeah I tried it too. I'm going to give it a go, but it's not something I can have on in the background.

Subtitles is definitely the way to go.

I might try the next 3 seasons in a bit, I just need a break from the constant violence and cutthroat nature of the show.

Speaking of, I re-watched the Punisher series on Netflix. I absolutely love that shit. Bernthal is so goddamned good and the fight choreography is excellent. It's not perfect, but I love it. I've probably been through the series 10 times, and it never gets old.

Just finished season 4 of Gomorrah. Wowwwwwwww............

The first two seasons are super dark and fairly linear. The third season takes it on a slightly different path that's still intense. And then season 4 involves a very different arc and is a bit more complex (and relaxed) but concludes brilliantly.

What a show. Excited so many of you are giving it a try. I can't really stack it up against things like The Wire, Sopranos, and Boardwalk Empire in an apples-to-apples way given the language/subtitles/dubbing. but it's as enjoyable as anything I've ever watched aside from maybe Game of Thrones.

Season 5 is already out in Italy in its entirety and just premiered in the UK. Coming to HBO Max some time early next year.

Heh - about 9-10 years, we bought property right outside Starved Rock State Park and tried to get it permitted to mine for Frac Sand. HOLY SHIT! You would have thought we were putting up a coal fired power plant INSIDE the park. It was a lot of work, and a lot of shit slinging that we had to take, but we got it done. :)

I plan to watch that series soon. Thanks!

Judging just on how everyone from that area who was portrayed in the documentary had their own special sauce of eccentricity, that doesn't surprise me.

I'm 3/4s of the way thru season two of Gomorra. Watching with subtitles. I don't think an episode goes by without multiple deaths of characters you know. The only thing that surprises me is that the characters don't walk around with body armor since someone apparently gets shot every 27 minutes. Much, much darker than the Sopranos and Breaking Bad, and without the comedic breaks. No Pauly Walnuts trying to get Christopher to pick up the tab.

I actually just finished season 1 of Gomorrah while finishing season 5 and 6 of the Sopranos (my first time through the show) and it strikes a nice balance for me. I watch one episode of Gomorrah and 2 episodes of the Sopranos.

The contrast between ultra violence on mopeds and Cadillacs and titty bars is doubly entertaining.

First time through Sopranos huh?

It was a couple years ago when I went through it. It was really good IMO. Obviously some of the stuff is dated but there were some really good performances IMO. Much like the wire - dated but excellent

When it was on, I was seeing a chick who's family was really into the show and she preferred medigans if you know what I'm saying. So I wasn't really welcome over to watch and she hated it.

I only have a few episodes left and its easily one of my all time favorite shows. I could see myself going through it again at some point.

Yeah. I was a poor high school/college student when it was on.

I’m contemplating doing it again before I dump HBO again

For fans of Top Gear, stop what you are doing and watch Clarkson's Farm on Amazon prime. Hilarious.

Obviously, it has the Clarkson 'stamp.' He mucks about and fuddy-duddies. Some of it is played up for camera and some of it is hand-waved for time and editing, but it's a great little primer look into the complexities of operating a modern farm.

And much of it a GORGEOUS. He has some beautiful pastures and the cinematographers are good at catching little slices of beauty and wildlife and weather to intersperse the narrative.

On Amazon Prime.

I think whether it's 'target market' depends on what you're looking for. It's certainly not a serious treatise on farming, but it's a pitch-perfect use of Clarkson's talent. And for such a cantankerous guy, it's quite wholesome and comforting.

Also, coincidentally, I recall 3 separate Farm news bits coming across my feed this week

1 - season 2 is moving along swimmingly
2 - Clarkson has taken a sabbatical from operations until March
3 - Township turned down zoning for a restaurant.

Related - Hammond has opened a car restoration operation in the vein of Leno, and there's a series on the activities there, but I haven't checked it out yet, just the youtube/drivetribe clips on the opening of the facility.

I watched The Soporanos in its entirety for the first time in 2010 and really enjoyed it.

But if I'm gonna watch an HBO gangster show again, I think it's Boardwalk Empire I'd be focused on.

I watched Flight Attendant. I wasn't expecting anything, but I like to look at Kaley Cuoco.

It's pretty silly, but it is a really nice lightweight interesting watch. They really do a nice job.

And Kaley Cuoco is hot.

Watched the first 2 episodes last night. Definitely has that Gomorrah ultra violence vibe. Catchy storyline right off the bat as well.
