I've never bothered to watch it and now I probably never will.

Darjeeling Ltd: Intriguing, but not my favorite Wes Anderson film. Probably wouldn't watch it again. Made me think about how annoying my older sister can be, and how I'd like to go to India and smell it.

REALLY liked the symbolism of them "leaving their baggage behind" when they jumped on the train at the end, though. Very nice.

????

Fairview Entertainment, Aldamisa Entertainment and Open Road Films are not Disney companies.

I assume you might mean plot? This was a low budget indie film Favreau wanted to make about his love of food with his friends. I dont know what else you could expect.

underEJ 12-29-2014 11:20 AM

Saw Inherent Vice and Big Eyes. Both were interesting.

Inherent Vice will likely be divisive with some people loving it and others hating it. I thought it had a few holes, but I guess that's tolerable in a drug addled detective movie. Has a strong Long Goodbye vibe, and a well tuned mood to it's setting. The story is loose and trippy which I think works for me, but I'm pretty okay with a movie not making sense sometimes if it has purpose.

Big Eyes was the opposite. Very straightforward narrative, made interesting by the two leads who are fantastic. It is also a treat to see Burton take on a story about stealing credit for things when he has a history of being accused of not sharing credit.

Franco was a little over the top and I'm tired of Rogen playing the same character in every movie, but a solid B+. The guy who plays Kim Jong really nailed it.

I enjoyed it as well. Rogen's shtick is getting a bit exhausting, but the film was hella funny. And I agree, the guy who played Kim did an awesome job.

For those not familiar, these are writers with a great eye [npi] for story based on real events.

They previously collaborated on Man in the Moon, People v. Larry Flynt, and Ed Wood.

This is the story of the legal wrangling over the copyright on those wide-eyed portraits that were popular for a hot minute.

An Education.

Great little vignette on what life in 1960s Britain was like.

Would be great to date 16-year olds. ROFL

I was most attracted to the teacher, though. Man she needed to loosen up.

I have a question. Every good review I have seen of it seems to harp on the gimmick. Every negative reviews I have seen says remove the gimmick and you have a terribly generic 3 hour movie. Thoughts?

All I can say is that it was a unique movie that kept my attention. The acting was honestly great...really liked Ethan Hawke in it.

It's a bit dry but well made. A slow burn.

Watched an incredibly sad film last night, The Wind that Shakes the Barley. It has been vilified by many British critics for being pro-republican in its portrayal of the time surrounding a peace treaty between IRA leaders and the crown in 1921, but it really has so much more to offer. It is a sometimes off paced, but well made story about a young Irish doctor who leaves his medical career behind after witnessing cruelty by British officers to join his brothers IRA group and fight, until the treaty, when he is suddenly at odds with his own brother as the Irish split into opposing factions. I've been on a Cillian Murphy streak lately, and this was quite good. A big warning about the pacing though. I am pretty tolerant of slow and steady, but this jerks a bit from the fast pace to the deliberate and it hurts the film from time to time, but the really key story moments are paced well.

I sometimes like stories about individuals or small groups in complicated historical situations more than epic tellings of heroes, and this fit that bill quite well.

Watched "In a World" on Netflix Instant. Under the radar but good comedy cast including Rob Cordry, Demetri Martin, and Ken Marino from The State. Easy to watch and some funny moments.

I just watched "Mr. Nobody" on NetFlix. The description was putting me off. I thought it sounded crappy. I was pleasantly surprised when I finally gave it a shot at the request of my older son. It held my attention throughout. I would recommend it.

Finally got around to Harmontown.

Pause for a second,

shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhOCKING!!!

Man, did it deliver, for its intended audience. I seriously can't get a lens for those who didn't wade through the Harmon experience IRT, but I listened to the podcasts as they went out, then to see the story behind them, and immediacy, and the fluency.

If I had to sum it up in a word, the word would be honest. It's the most honest thing I felt I've seen in a while. Its really weird to have the word 'relatable' be applied to mass media in a manner for immediate, but this documentary really offers a perspective on a life lived that it could be the life you live, yet so brave and quick you don't know if you'd survive. It echoes all the things you'd like to think you would do, while suggesting that you'd never have the courage to follow through.

If it's possible to be both humbled and inspired at the same time, that is Harmontown for me.

Life is full of broken people who are trying to do better. What a message.

Frosty 01-12-2015 03:03 PM

Last weekend was a free preview weekend for all the premium channels on DirecTV so I watched some of the random movies.

Transcendence - terrible movie with laughable "science"

Rio 2 - I surprisingly liked the first one but this sequel was boring with much, much worse music

Winter's Tale - not quite what I was expecting but I enjoyed it. A nice urban fantasy.

Airport '75 - I saw this movie in the theater when I was around 12 years old. It has all the hallmarks of a great '70's disaster movie - ludicrous "disaster", a lot of screaming and carrying on, blatent sexual harrassment of the female characters and Charlton Heston. Airplane! borrowed a lot from this movie so playing "spot the influence" is fun too.

Really enjoyed The Imitation Game. I think nearly every A-Lister Brit made an appearance in that flick. Took me about ten minutes to figure out Hugh was Ozymandias from Watchmen.

It's a dammed travesty how Turing's life ended up, especially considering what he gave to the war effort.

American Sniper was excellent, I don't care what your feelings are about Chris Kyle the person, because Chris Kyle the SEAL was one bad dude and he saved countless lives in Iraq.

Some very gritty and realistic battle scenes, its impressive to see how those guys actually operate.

Eastwood pretty much never makes a bad movie and this was no exception.

So much potential. But fell pretty flat. A few of the suspense scenes were awesome. There was one claustrophobia scene not too far into the movie that literally had me crawling up the back of my chair. The plot gets a little weird. Too much shaky camera. OK for a cheap scare....

I finally got around to watching this one today.

It started off great, I thought. I'm a huge fan of the alternate history adventure type flicks and the first half or so of this one delivered on that front.

It did get a little weird near the end, but that's to be expected.

How does Sami Gayle come across? It's weird how, watching her, your assessment goes from 'that's a boy,' to 'no that's a girl,' to 'she's actually a pretty girl,' to 'and quite talented to boot.'

I decided Friday to check out Birdman and see what all the hoopla was about. The first hour I thought, how can a movie this crazy be such a hit, think 'Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind' crazy. The couple in front of us got up and left about 45 minutes in. However, the theater was packed since the film had left about a month ago and the theater brought it back. Most everyone there was like myself, I'm 64 and retired. The first hour I gave it a 6 out of 10. By the end of the film I gave it an 8. I enjoy a movie that goes outside the normal boundaries.

Saturday I saw American Sniper. I don't see how anyone can hate this movie. I gave it a 10. I'm a life long Democrat but when I was 20 I joined the Army in 1970. The film brought back memories of how I felt when I was younger.
