Ive got a massive backlog of games right now, and so many solid new releases soon:
Tomb Raider Red Dead' Black Ops Cyberpunk looks good too, but I'm assuming it's 2019? Either way - that's a lot to get to. |
Finally got around to starting The Witcher 3. I'm hooked. About 50 hours in the last 3 weeks and I'm nowhere near done.
|
I've tried to play the Witcher 3 multiple times. But I simply can't get past the reeruned fighting system. Just awful...
|
It took me three tries to get far enough in Witcher 3 to get into it. I liked it, but I'm not one of those that thought it was an all time great game.
The fighting system wasn't my favorite. I think I played through it on the easiest setting. Although I did no potions (except where plot advancement required it) and almost no weapon/armor upgrades. There were a few sections where running away was not an option and no healing potions made it pretty challenging even on the easiest setting. I thought the character development was pretty good outside of all the romantic angst back story it tried to throw at you. But maybe that was because I hadn't played any of the previous versions. |
Once you really get far into the game and develop your skills tree the combat is much better. God of War suffered the same problem. It's basically mash square until you develop your shit.

Also, it was annoying at first, but I really like how the game basically forces you to learn how to fight the right way and not just spam attack. Want to beat the guys with crowbars? Gotta dodge behind them first or they'll counter your dumb ass. Want to smash the giant brutes? Gotta web them up first or they'll haymaker half your health bar. Genius game design. |
Getting near the end of the game. This iteration of Doc Ock is ****ing awesome. The rest of the Sinister Six are pretty much bit players, besides the other obvious one.
Post credits seem to suggest that

Samurai Spirits = Samurai Shodown. from the roster, this looks like the original Sam Sho with artsy graphics. |
I'm starting really get anxious about RDR2.

My Most Influential Games
With the fever pitch of nostalgia surrounding the releases of these "classic" consoles, I have been thinking about my most fond memories of gaming growing up, so I created a list. Please share yours if so inclined. Sonic the Hedgehog https://images.lukiegames.com/t_300e...g_p_qxllcc.jpg Little did I know that 5 year old me would be receiving one of the most well regarded platformers of all time on Christmas of 1991. I had no idea what a video game was, or how to play one. I was just amazed that my fingers could move an object on the television! I certainly dont regard Sonic as a top game, or even a great game (personally if I could have a do over, a super nintendo would have rocked my world) but it was my first console and game, and I will always treasure what got me into the hobby. Bomberman 64 https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/i...yj2Pw4quL-mt5u Ill admit that Mario 64 might be the greatest platformer ever, but Bomberman 64 is an amazing platformer, and has something Mario doesn't : multiplayer. I have wasted countless hours with my grade school buddies playing this game, and we still had a great time blowing each other up decades later. Possibly my favorite party game ever. Super Smash Bros. 64 https://edgeemu.net/screenshots/n64/...s.%20(USA).png Fighting games to this point were largley unintuitive to play. What sense does a quarter turn and 5 buttons make to perform a combo? What I wanted from a fighting game was delivered from an unlikely company using my favorite mascots. I spent hours pouring through video game magazines in anticipation of the release, and the hype was all met. Pulling off moves based on stick direction and severity of the move was satisfying, as was the KO system. While the formula has been perfected, this one started it all. Final Fantasy 7 https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/...01211191815451 Not my first RPG, that honor goes to Phantasy Star 2. 6 or 7 year me just couldnt quite get a handle on it then, but FF7 was right up teenage selfs' alley. The story, the characters, the enormity of the game, the music. At the time I considered it the greatest game ever, and it still has a place on my list. Halo: Combat Evolved https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...reencap%29.jpg You knew you were in for a treat when you heard the melancholy choir on the loading screen. Outside of Half Life 2, FPS games were not known for their story telling, sense of scale, or the strategic though going into which weapons to bring to a fight. The two weapon system and regnerative health bar are staples in most FPS today. What wasnt common for the time was the brilliant AI, who would react to what you did. The story was one of desperation, and I remember the anxiety of knowing there was only a finite number of marines, who were fragile and died easily to the Covevant. Later in the game it became apparent that everyone was dead, and that felt like a real gut punch that most games had not instilled at that point. The Last of US https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...Last_of_Us.jpg The greatest game ever. Rocket League https://rocketleague.media.zestyio.c...877706c9a5.jpg RC Cars and Soccer? Who would have thought this combination produced the greatest sports game of all time. In fact, I have rocket league pegged as a perfect video game. It is endlessly replayable, requiring the complete skill of the players, with elements that allow for an easy entry, but a moveset that raises the skill ceiling to a ridiculous level. My most played game ever. FTL https://i0.wp.com/www.lazygamer.net/...e-95-scrap.png Jesus these graphics suck, why is this game getting 9s and 10s? **** it, its 5 bucks on steam...oh..holy shit...this is amazing! And thus began my current love affair with roguelikes. Punishing but absolutely brilliant, subset games made a game that can be played in quick bursts, utilizing RNG elements and strategy to craft an all time classic. This game led me to playing other greats like Spelunky, Binding of Issac, Enter the Gungeon, Dead Cells, and others. |
Got a Sega Genesis for my birthday.....in the original ****ing box.

I started with Combat on Atari. it was nice because it was 20 games in one. I didnt play Atari much because the games stunk.
I played alot of arcade games starting in '82. Williams games were my favorites. Robotron 2084 would be my most influential game. http://mirrors.arcadecontrols.com/Os...-wallpaper.jpg twin sticks is still the standard control scheme for top down shooters and FPS on console. now that's influential. Gauntlet is another game that was pretty influential. a lot of isometric dungeon crawlers are iterations of the classic. https://i.ytimg.com/vi/fLnkCAFihqA/maxresdefault.jpg Myth: the Fallen Lords was ahead of its time and pretty influential. I'm reminded of Myth: TFL every time I play Total War Warhammer <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/XJtqU2Lrtr0" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
Bards Tale IV out, I remember playing back in the 80s on the commie c64
<iframe width="640" height="480" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/oKtdB78g6tI" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe> Also starting to play this and although it's not Star Control 2 the greatest game ever made it's certainly fun. <iframe width="640" height="480" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/YrGTJV0bT6c" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe> Playing a lot of this also, if you played Theme Hospital the best Sim Game ever this one IS EVEN better.. <iframe width="640" height="480" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/jmlaOYMU8qA" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe> |

I haven't played a videogam in a decade and a half. I recently started playing Hungry Shark Evolution (hey, it's free) and I've gotten stuck on a few of the special shark missions.
I used to use Gamefaqs for help back in the day, but i can't find anything useful there now. Is there any site that gives useful tips for specific missions in this game? |

Thank you patteeu, but those videos feature the sharks from the first part of the game. My problem is mainly with the high score missions of the so-called "special" sharks that are available later on. In the "regular" shark missions I am doing ok, (high score is over a billion points and my longest survival time is 1:48:00) but i struggle mightily with some of these special missions. I struggle to even get a couple of million points.
I don't know if it's just me, or if the designers did a shitty job setting the difficulty level vis-ŕ-vis the rest of the game. I expected Candy Crush and ended up with some Ninja Gaiden shit that can only be beaten by an autistic Japanese kid who has been raised in a lab fed on nothing but shark fin soup and Red Bull. |
Quote:
I’m not personally familiar with the game, but if you put the right search string together (I think I used “hungry shark revolution walkthrough”), you might be able to find what you’re looking for. Maybe if you add “special” or “special missions”. |
Bought a Nintendo Switch.
Gonna travel a little bit w/ my job, perfect for plane rides/hotel etc. Zelda BotW, Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart 8, and have Mario Party and Super Smash Bros on pre-order, can't wait. |

Don’t forget, Pokémon is releasing its first console style game in November as well, if you’re into that. Skyrim is worth a buy just to have it mobile with you as well. |

Not into Pokemon. Even when I was 9 or 10 when that shit came out in the US, thought it was gay as **** then...still do now ROFL No offense if that's your thing. I also don't know what the **** is the big deal about Fortnite, can anyone fill me in wtf is so great about that game? |
A lot of people really seem to like Octopath Traveler for the Switch.
Splatoon is an absolutely awesome game. Evidently Splatoon 2 has a pretty good campaign, but the real joy of the game is the online. As for Fortnite: I think it's success is largely due to the cross platform nature of the game allowing tons of kids to all play together, regardless of what kind of gaming system they have. That meant that EVERYONE could play each other. Plus.. it has dances. |
Everyone loves that Octopath game I'm not sure why lol.

Reading ComoChief's list of Nintendo games makes me miss the N64 days.

Some great ones on there...Celeste, Dead Cells, Undertale, A Night in the Woods, etc. Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate is awesome too and portable MH = glorious. |
Other than your standard Nintendo Games, the following are switch essentials:

Anyone else excited about the Occulus Quest announcement? Having played a lot of PSVR last year, I think VR will deliver the next wave of gaming experiences, and this one has me excited.

I've thought about buying my wife a Switch for Xmas. Honestly, didn't even know the Switch existed. But she used to play the bejesus out of the PSP I bought her.
She played games like Donkey Kong, Crash Banicoot, Mario, etc. I think she would dig this Switchin thing. She's perfectly content playing those stupid app style games on her Nook.(I think?)...or maybe it's a Kindle fire. One of those. So, size-wise, she'd like the Switch and it's cool that you can hook it up to a TV/dock etc. :hmmm: |

Everyone loves the monthly challenges and special skins and dances. They marketed perfectly for a free game. Sadly all the competitors are copying but charging 60 bucks plus additional money for the same thing. |
Rented call of duty BO4 yesterday. Basically a revamp of BO1 maps unless you get the season pass. No story mode and the addition of blackout, like battlefield or fortnite from what I can tell. It was fun in a nostalgic way. Probably not buying it though. COD has really jumped the shark.
|

But as I went along, I got several new maps (which are pretty good). I'm getting my ass kicked, but enjoying it. You really are fodder until you level-up your loadout (which you cant customize till you get to level 4 or 5 I think). Either way, been having fun - and some of those classic maps are all-time faves (shooting range, summit, slums). |
After playing Beat Saber, Robo Recall, and Super Hot on my headset, I can confirm that VR is the future. It is up to consumers on when they will adopt the technology, but it is incredible. It will be hard going back to traditional 2D gaming after thia weekend.

Also Beat Saber is so good. Just awesome awesome stuff. Youtube videos are fun to watch, but being inside and hitting those notes, with some songs making you do the dance (looking at Thriller, Gangam Style), I cant get enough, and neither do any of my wife and I's friends who are begging for another night of playing. |
I haven't played sim racing with VR but many people on iracing swear by it. it looks grand

The digital crack known as Diablo 3 is out on Switch today....goodbye life....
|
I finished God of War about a week ago. For some reason I had a real itch to achieve 100% of the trophies and I ****ing did it. Grinded like a mother****er in Musphelheim and Ivaldi's Workshop in order to get the armor and XP needed to take out all of the Valkyries. I even found all of those bitch ass Odin's ravens.
I've never been one to even give a shit about gaming achievements but for some reason this time I was. I think because for this game it was relatively easy to do so. It was super anticlimactic though. I thought more might happen but you just get the final achievement and that's it lol ah well. At least now I can say I've completed 100% of a game in my lifetime! |

I don't buy that many games at full price. I usually wait for steam sales unless it's something I have been really hyped about. But this past weekend I got a wild hair and bought Assassin's Creed: Odyssey and I have to say it is pretty damn good.
I didn't play Origins, but I have played several AC games over the years and the last one I really enjoyed was Black Flag. It had gotten pretty stale. This latest installment has really come a long way. Lots of cool weapon types to choose from. Finally someone did spear combat well. I love the spear fighting in this game. The combat has evolved to a much cooler place in general. Huge open world. Sail the high seas and do pirate shit, fight in big faction battles, have sex with an old lady, fight bounty hunters that are coming after you. I've been having fun. |
I just started playing AC Origins for the first time this week. I played for a bit, got the feel for it, then started a new game on Nightmare difficulty.
I'm 5 hours in and just finished the prologue (I think I have anyway - I completed the first main mission, haven't seen the title screen yet). This game is huge and very, very fun. |
Quote:
Also, it's probably got the best voice acting in the series. The guy who voiced Bayek ****ing killed it. Enjoy the game, bro. Don't want to get too far ahead for you but I'm hearing Odyssey is even better. I can't wait for the price drop on that one. |
Fallout 76 next week!

Last night I really learned my lesson about wandering on the highest difficulty. I headed out to explore a couple of ? north of the Yamu temple that I had visited before when I first got the game. I got just north of the river, not even 200m from the temple and decided to shoot some antelope with my bow. I was level 10. From out of the trees comes a pack of six level 7 hyena and I'm thinking "no problem". Um yeah, I died almost instantly after getting surrounded. LOL The good thing is this gates the crafting too, preventing over leveling. On normal, I could hunt everything all day - hippo, crocs, whatever and just get the crafting materials I needed because there was no danger. Now, I don't dare take on 3 hippo, they'll kill me. So I have to plan my hunts and leveling my gear is taking so much longer. I'm absolutely loving the challenge. EDIT: Forgot to add that like you, I'm an ancient history buff. I love all the games, especially Black Flag, but I've been looking forward to Egypt / Greece / Rome for a LONG time. The setting in Origins is top notch. |

Sounds like you've got the right idea on the franchise already but you should definitely check out Black Flag and Origins if nothing else. Brotherhood and Origins are two of my favorite video games ever. Quote:
Still, loved it. Have you done the discovery tour yet? I finished the game months ago and still haven't gotten around to it. |

By the way, I wouldn't lament the fact that the game was too easy for you. Even on Nightmare, the game is no longer all that hard. For a button masher, yeah it would be a lot harder because getting hit even once hurts bad. A heavy guard even 5 levels less than me can take my entire life bar in two hits so there's no room for error.
That being said, if you're careful and approach the combat feedback loop appropriately, you're not going to struggle with anything other than large packs of predators, hippos, or high level troops. Which incidentally, is still tough to deal with on Normal, it's just worse on Nightmare. I've not gone out of my way to gather crafting materials but have all upgrades in purple now and I'm also not leveling my weapons all that often (my primary sword is 10 levels lower than me!) but I'm still not struggling with combat as long as I'm patient. One thing Normal (or even Hard) has going for it is that there's no "oh crap, run away" moments or untimely deaths due to not seeing a guy behind you or something. Insta-death can be really frustrating if it happens too often and I definitely have had it happen a few times. |
FYI: Assassin's Creed: Odyssey is the Deal of the Day on Amazon.
$39.99 for Xbox1 and PS4. https://www.amazon.com/apb/page/ref=...2HKY1G7DVYHZKJ |
Been playing shadow of the tomb raider and having a blast. Just got to the badass moment when Lara fell from the tower into the water then ****ed shit up.

Fallout 76 is amazing, I hear people complaining oh it's just Fallout 4 online. Like there is something wrong with that, been waiting for this forever. Going to let us have private servers and mods after the first year. Right now there is SO much to do in the game and the quests are anything but cookie cutter. If anyone is a fan of the fallout series check it out, you will get that 5 more minutes feeling and then look up 4 hours later thinking wtf. :)

Recently just started a new play through of Breath of the Wild....goddamn this game is just pure magic.

every time I log on to Steam, i see friends playing Battle Brothers.

But your mercenaries dont get to use magic. you will have to make do with peparation and solid tactics. this is a challenging game with optional ironman mode. my first impression:9/10 |

I mentioned the Xbox game pass to someone here who wanted to play the new Forza game...if you want the access that it provides with all the free games. Amazon now has it for half price so you can get a year of it which is normally 120 bucks for 70.
Figured that might be of some interest. |
