I caught some big rainbows in some high and fast water conditions last weekend. I used a #12 "Special" Wooly Bugger on a 5 wt setup:

Actually, I don't really look like Steve Carrell. I look much more like David Schwimmer or Josh Grobin.

Just before noon at Silver Lake Washington in Cowlitz county.
Bite was slow water was 54 degrees. Caught four all over 3lbs by 1pm, this girl was almost 6.5 lbs. Caught her on a zero gravity jig head with a creature feature trailer. If you haven't heard of zero gravity jig heads they are very light in weight with a brush hook guard. Looks similar to a regular jig head but light as a feather and very durable. They fall one foot every three seconds, perfect for prespawners in colder water.

Catch and clean enough fish for a week so you can throw everything back and keep fishing for the big one.

Nope, those aren't the same pictures at all. Most of my New Mexico trout were small, wild browns. The fun of those is actually being able to catch anything at all. They are finicky wild fish from a small mountain stream with a short growing season. The pictures here are from the Lower Mountain Fork river in Oklahoma. It's a tailwater supplied with hatchery trout and steady water temperatures due to the flow from the dam, which gives year around growth.

Can I go NBA style and knock both of you up?

I need to get out in my kayak. I got a new car so I have to first get a roof rack though.

Anyone here in the Kansas City area catching loads of crappie yet? I am wondering how close they have moved to the banks. My guess would be they aren't quite on the bank yet but are maybe out in 8-10 feet of water waiting for a little bit of a warmer weather trend.

Wish I had some good crappie advice for ya, but I only catch them here and there when I'm not even targeting them specifically.

All this talk is getting me jonesing for my trip in early July to Wolf Lake in the Kawartha's (couple hours North of Toronto). Large & smallmouth and quite possibly some pike & muskie.

The crappie are on the banks at night in the kc area but off in 6-8 feet during the day. I've been killin em up at smiyhville the past three days at sunset. I'm headed to Truman Thursday next week and it should be right smack in the spawn I would think

I like to submit my application for membership in that club.

Or maybe I just hate myself for not going back to Canada for another Fishing trip. Went up to Lac Seul in Quebec several years ago. Several days of Northerns, Walleyes, and Smallies was fricken great.
I love to fish, it has always been my favorite thing to do. Funny thing is I don't like to eat fish. Every now and then I'll try a bite or two but it has never been anything I like to eat at all. On that trip I stayed at a decent lodge and had a guide every day. And every day he would cook shore lunch for me and my friend. The first day he made fried potatoes/onions and walleye. Just rolled in corn meal and fried. So I tried the walley. It was killer, I mean it was 'Damn, what the hell have I been misssing out on?' That day I ate so many walleye fillets that my stomach was hurting and I had to just lay down in the boat for an hour or so before I could stand up, move around and fish without my stomach feeling like I had a watermelon in it. Every day I was there I had walleye for lunch. I was thinking I would never again give my fishing buddy all my fish because I didn't like it. Unfortunately, fish has never tasted like that to me again. Doesn't mater what kind, or how it's cooked. I just don't like the taste. I think maybe the water had a lot to do with it. Crystal clear, clean, unpolluted water and enviroment is about the only thing I can think of that's different.
I'll never forget that week long romance with her. That smile of hers, those big beautiful eyes, the playing hard to catch and the way she tasted in my mouth. She satisfied me like no other......before or since. I still run across her from time to time. Shes changed though. Distant and cold, tries to get away from me when she figures out I'm there. And worse of all, every encounter since Lac Seul just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Excuse me while a go cry a little bit in private.

Majority of these lakes are on crown land so they don't get too busy. Mainly just canoes. The fishing is great!

It was nothing different than usual lunch time hunger. Had a good breakfast at the lodge that morning. The guide had brought something else for me the first day, I think fried chicken, because I'd told him I didn't like fish.
I really don't know why it tasted so good that week I wish I did.

I've always wanted to fish those northern-type waters for muskie and pike, legit freshwater "monsters"... I've also always wondered, do people eat those two fish?

And walleye, I've ate a lot of what the jokers that run restaurants and taverns around here CALL walleye... but its not, its always cod or something similar.

I'd love to try the real thing.

Go Fishing.............

Easy 6 04-25-2015 12:47 PM

Whats the sauce on that fish?

Beautiful tomato btw, cant wait to start getting some garden maters.

redshirt32 04-25-2015 01:04 PM

Love me some maters,
we use banana pepper juice or some other hot pickled juice and peppers and spices, butter, a little beer, looks like my fishing buddy went heavy on the butter though.

You just cant beat fresh Walleye, add a rib eye soaked in dales marinate..... cook med rare and tater and onions and a can of beans, fresh maters and avocado.......mmmmmm

Easy 6 04-25-2015 01:11 PM

Spicy vinegar diluted down with some beer and butter... :hmmm: yeah I bet that makes a damn fine sauce, especially when you throw in some wood smoke flavor from the fire.

loochy 04-25-2015 04:50 PM

It's nice to see someone do something besides the generic cornmeal fried version of fish.

You KNOW that shit was awesome.

beach tribe 05-10-2015 08:01 AM

I have been naturally cringing at the far side shore of the lake and all it's shady goodness
Just out of reach.
The bunkers are within a meter or so.
So I can't fish the best part of the lake unless I want to pay green fees.

That's what I thought. Until a wily old vet cruised past me today, hooked a turn under the cart bridge and played the **** through.

beach tribe 05-10-2015 08:29 AM

So, has anyone posted evidence of landing a 10+lb large mouth?

That's the what drives me out there time after time.

A fish with enough torque to pop the strongest lines.

I've lost that fish 3 times out here this year.
Many hook em. Fewer than you might think ever get one on dry land.
Having the drag strong enough to set the hook, and forgiving enough to not pop the line, is just the first hurdle. I jerk the shit out of it twice.
If the hook is not locked when he comes out for the freedom shake he's loose.
But, if it is, and the drag is locked when he dives, he swims away with some sweet facial jewelry.
I had one jump on me a few weeks back that could have swallowed a toddler.
It's actually torturous that they are in there and that I don't have one.
It's kinda like a Chiefs SB, too.
I mean, it should happen before I die, but that doesn't mean it will.

I'll be off fishing tomorrow at the California aqueduct, this will only be my third time fishing this year. Anybody have any luck this year? My uncle catches one every time we go, he has the magic touch. Here's a couple of pics from a few days ago.

We've been using anchovies and night crawlers, we are catching nothing but cat fish (except for that carp). Last year we was catching only stripers using the same bait. I'm going to trying liver tomorrow and see how that works.

loochy 05-18-2015 05:11 AM

Lol @ the graffiti on the bbridge in the last picture. Who feels the need to graffiti "gone fishin"? Haha.

Iowanian 05-18-2015 09:04 AM

Last night I mowed, got the kids to bed and snuck down to my pond the last half hour of daylight to see what the bass looked like. I stocked it just about 1 year ago, and have stuffed it with fat heads and golden shiners.

I pulled in 3 bass over 14" and they're all fat and hitting hard. Pulled in a 9" bluegill that was pretty impressive to me as well. I'm really happy with what I'm seeing and excited to see where this goes in 3-4 more years.

Just wish I had more time to fish.

We've been using anchovies and night crawlers, we are catching nothing but cat fish (except for that carp). Last year we was catching only stripers using the same bait. I'm going to trying liver tomorrow and see how that works.

He catches ONE every time you go huh? Yeah. magic touch.
I bet you dumb ****s ate that carp.

Ok, to be fair, Carp is delicious if you have any clue about preparing and cooking fish. Scale it, score the meat every quarter inch or so, and deep fry it and it's incredible. Or, scale it, filet it, and brine and smoke it. I've been to a few places up in Minnesota that sell smoked carp and it's amazing, and I've scored and fried it, and you wouldn't know you weren't eating crappie except it's much larger.

 I treat people accordingly. Dude is a dip shit.

I caught some nice ones yesterday. Gonna post some pics as soon as my phone charges up.

Pulled in a peacock bass that was like 12-14 inches. Those things fight to the death. I thought I had a monster on there. They are thin like bluegill only bigger. Those skinny fish can put a fight.
Caught it on a buzz bait too. Crazy.

Pics will be up in a 1/2 hr or so.

OK......no.

And if so, it isn't that kind of carp.

Still, ugh.

I'll limit my consumption of shit eaters to Catfish. And only because they are Fn delicious.

beach tribe 05-18-2015 01:18 PM

Going out into the everglades this weekend. Will have one of my best shots at a 10+ pounder out there since it holds some of the biggest bass you'll ever see in large numbers.
So if an alligator doesn't eat me it'll be pretty sweet.

I've heard carp is good if you know how to prepare it but I've never messed with them. Far to many other tasty fish out there that I don't have to mess with all the bones.

To be honest the water is pretty damn clear, sometimes you can see the fish. The striper is damn good. Stop being a fussy whiny female and grow some ****ing balls David ****ing Schwimmer

If you actually definitely want to catch a 10+ pounder, go to Okeechobee with a guide. My father in law absolutely killed them and caught multiple 10+ fish when he went. They were fishing with live golden shiners I believe (which isn't really my bag), but the grip and grins were priceless.

threebag 05-18-2015 02:45 PM

Hell you could have sold/bartered the carp to cover your bait cost atleast. lol

Interesting.
Have been thinking about a trip to Okeechobee.
Not sure my pride can allow me to do the whole guide thing, though, unfortunately.
Not saying it's a bad thing, or whatever.
I really want that 10 pounder, I just want it to come more naturally without any assistance.

loochy 05-18-2015 03:02 PM

I like fishing.

I hired a guide when I was in New Mexico. It was well worth it, even though I didn't need him. He corrected some flaws in my cast and he gave me some pointers that I had never previously run across.

So, here is how that carp is prepared for frying. And YES, it is that exact same type of common carp. I've caught just about every species of freshwater fish swimming. I love bluegill, walleye, and crappie as table fare. Having said that, common carp is every bit as good. They have the same diet as bluegill for the most part, in insects and invertebrates, so the flesh is similar, but you can catch one and have a nice fish fry instead of having to catch 30.

I don't fish for carp at all, but if you catch one, by all means, try scoring and frying it, or try brining and smoking it. I hate when people spout out opinions about something that they've never even tried.

I couldn't eat carp just because of the way they look. The only other fish I squeem when I touch is called a chub. If I can't touch it I sure as shit aren't eating it.

Rosie O'Donnell may have a muff that tastes like a fresh honey pot but I'll never know because of the package.

People mistake drum when they catch them thinking they are a carp species. Fillet them out no bones and nice white fillets. Fun to catch too

The red ear sunfish in my pond are getting to be pretty nice size. There are now bass controlling the smaller ones, so I'm releasing these to get bigger. That's my son. He's a fishin machine

Drum are good eating.
The Neosho is up and they're running right now too.

Actually that totally makes sense. I could probably learn a thing or two.

Hmmm. I guess you do learn new things all the time.

There are massive carp visible daily behind the house.
I actually think it might be illegal to not release carp for some reason down here. That's what someone told me, anyway. Not sure if true.

ShortRoundChief 05-18-2015 04:36 PM

I once caught crabs but I was nowhere near water.

beach tribe 05-18-2015 04:38 PM

So Tennessee game and wildlife came to our lake in TN and saned(sp?) it to see what all was in it, and they told me that the Bass would never get much bigger because there were so many that they didn't have enough to eat between all of them to grow large.

Does that make any sense to anyone here at all?
