Happened to try a nice chain liquor store that’s not exactly located in a good area of town and scored some Col. Taylor small batch along with finding a good source of Weller Special Reserve and Buff Trace. Haven’t had the Weller SR in a really long time and couldn’t recall if it’s actually good or just hard to find now from the reputation of the better variants.

Miles 08-17-2018 07:16 PM

Had them both during this preseason game. The Col. Taylor is a bit different flavor profile than some of the other Buff Trace brands I've tried. Really enjoyed it.

The Weller SA is a bit rough around the edges for my tastes but has some stuff going for it. Would love to try the more aged versions. Figure I'll enjoy this one more with ice which is not bad for something this cheap.

Weller SR I think you mean.

And if so, I can't believe that take. Or maybe I can, coming from a softy who likes the simple, yet boring complexity of Blanton's!

Got into the Weller SR during the game some more and have a different take and still drinking it neat after threatening some ice. Think I made the mistake before of trying it after Col. Taylor which highlighted the rough edges of the Weller more.

Still say the same that it could use some more aging and would love to try the better ones. The SR is quite solid if not great when considering you can get a giant handle bottle for $32 if you can actually find it.

lewdog 08-26-2018 08:36 PM

Added two bottles to the bourbon stash this week.

Parent's gifted me the American Prairie Bourbon for my birthday.

Muled the Montana Whiskey back in my checked bag from vacation. It's a young whiskey but the peculiar taste of pecan wood and hints of chocolate were like nothing I've tasted in bourbon whiskey before. Not sure how's that's being done but it's fantastic drinking.

Sometimes being open for weeks or months will improve the taste as you likely know.

I LOVE Old Weller Antique. Find some. You'll absolutely love it.

I don't see a study on the 8oz of high proof bourbon and 4 beers I had yesterday?

Until then, that study blows.

Holy ****, man. Did you drop $400 on that? Also, can I come over and hang out?

I recently purchased Barrell Bourbon 15 Cask Strength. It is pretty damn good. I probably wouldn't have picked it up for retail at $100, but I've got a vendor buddy that hooks me up from time to time.

jdubya 08-30-2018 09:50 AM

Since radiation basically blasted my taste buds into oblivion, all hard alcohols taste the same to me...as if sipping a bottle of rubbing alcohol. I can still enjoy my Coors Lites but no more hard alcohol for me.

When it comes to bourbon, start with Evan Williams white label. If you like it, move on from there.

I can see that.

I'm not a huge fan of fire, I like it every now and then, but am more of a smooth guy. TBH, I've been drinking more scotch than Bourbon lately. No reason really, just seems to be what strikes my fancy.

$160 and $190. It's my Christmas whiskey. Both are awesome. Picked up a couple incredible armagnac's too but nobody probably drinks those here

Hadn’t heard of it either. I happened to be talking to a store manger I particularly trust at a place that occasionally gets in hard to find shit. Mentioned they had a bottle left sqarreld away in the back and highly recommended it so went with it.

Miles 08-31-2018 10:07 PM

Tell me more about armagnac please. I like brandy a lot but haven’t dug into them all that much. Mostly some decent cognac here and there and what I’ve really liked for the price has been Spanish brandy like cardenal mendoza

I am no expert and am still relatively new to this area. Picked up a
1978 Darroze 40 Year Old "Domaine Le Tuc" Single Vintage Cask Strength Armagnac but have not opened it yet. Was highly recommended by people who know my palate.
https://www.klwines.com/p/i?i=1366654

Also got a bottle of Dartigalongue "Grand Eau-de-Vie d"Armagnac" Bas-Armagnac
https://www.klwines.com/p/i?i=1353047

This is outstanding. Beyond smooth and the complexity of flavors leaves you noticing something you didn't before with each sip. Highly recommend this one.

Very interesting with quite a lot of age. Need to read up more on the area. Have you run across any usual intro bottle or any you’d suggest as dip a toe in the water?

Saw Pappy 23 at a restaurant last night. At $100 a 1 oz pour was a bit much for me to try even for as impossible it is to find.

DruInking Witherspoon Whiskey tonight

It’s a Texas straight bourbon whiskey. My Mother-In-Law in Ft Worth gave me a bottle the last time I saw her. Really good stuff. 2 ice cubes breaks it open quite well. Anyone else tried it?

Blanton's isn't that easy to find here either and will run you about $70.

That's way over-priced for what it is.

Birthday Bourbons are so rare here you have to know someone at a liquor store to ever get one.

So depressing.

srvy 10-11-2018 08:46 PM

I like Bookers but is a bit harsh for my tastes a little splash of water tames it. I am a huge fan of Bakers 107 its a little mellower good stuff neat.

These are both bourbons from the Jim Beam tree both highly sought after at about the same price point 63.00 Bookers and 55.00 Bakers in KC area. I usually try for Bakers but its a little harder to find around here Strangely Price Chopper always seems to have both so I save the 8.00 bucks.

Bookers is a unique and amazing bourbon. I can certainly taste the higher alcohol content, but beyond that it has it a very distinctive flavor. It is easily in my top 5.

Do you like a cinnamon fairly long finnish get BT though its not the best buy it once was with the price increase. If you like a bit more heat with definite alcohol taste Knob Creek 9 y.o at 100 proof is more that. The Christmas gift box es should be out soon Knob Creek is golden with nice bourbon glasses. At a few dollars more Russell's Reserve, Evan Williams Antique and Smooth Ambler Scout are very good and in stock in Price Chopper up North so probably other locations to. If you like the heat in your Bourbon Old Grand Dad 114 is in stock to and 30.00 bucks. I would take the Dad 114 over Knob Creek but thats just me.

Not really a wrong choice, just a better one. If looking in that price point, Russell's Reserve (it's a 10 year) would be my choice. Have you had that?

I found a bottle yesterday as well. First time in 3 years I’ve seen it on the shelf.

Also bought a bottle of Breckinridge Port Cask Finish. It’s nice. Almost has a bit of a Canadian flair to it, but still holds its Bourbon profile.

srvy 10-31-2018 09:00 PM

This is the time to strike on bottles you normally dont see year round as xmas stock is filtering in. Price Chopper had 3 different bottles of Old Forester between 40 and 50 bucks I was salivating for but I had already picked out Angels Envy I wanted to try and a cheaper daily drinker Old Overholt Rye.

Not sure where you get cinnamon unless you get it from spiciness of the rye.

You are the only one I have ever heard say there isn’t a licorice. BT even says licorice is part of the finish.

No problem I have a bad habit of not proof reading my posts. When I go back and read them I cant make since of them either. Getting old kinda sucks.

My Buffalo Trace must've been defective.

I didn't taste any cinnamon, licorice, or the diesel fuel that the guy who gave it to me tasted. All I could taste was the sweet, cathartic burn.
