Welp it wasn't a space bug or killer space bird but it was a bat. It could have been a space bat? I'm not an expert on them.

Anyways I used him for bait but ended up leaving because of lightning and storm looked like it was coming my way so I got out of there.

Just in time I got home and down pouring rain.

Spoiler!

Bats were landing around you?

Yeah, that'd probably be enough to make me pack up.

We've been slaying the Northern's out of the Shell-Rock river up here in northern Iowa!

I just don't like being attacked by space creatures at the lake. Until I could identify it as a bat I thought that species was going make a meal out of my dog & I couldn't have that.

LMAO

How about this, two buddies reel in back to back world record catfish...

Anyone else out there still drowning worms? I'm going tomorrow afternoon, haven't been fishing for a while and its time. Gonna take some firewood, a pack of hotdogs and stay a while.

Maaaaan.

I have a Bass lake behind my house in TN that I fished for 20 years.

I live on a golf course with a lake down here and am experiencing the best Bass fishing of my life.

3+ pounders every other day. Funny how life is sometimes.

I've fished the Missouri River 4 times since Jan. 1. Caught 1 tiny Channel Cat, but it's sure fun watching the ducks and geese roam up and down the river. I also saw a huge buck come out of a river woodpile on the bank about 50 yards down river from me. Always something happening on the Missouri

SAUTO 02-16-2015 05:17 PM

I caught a mess of crappie this morning. Had a little ice to break under the trap on the dock and it was a cold mother.

But a mess is always worth it. And fresh crappie out of some freezing water is the best.

Fish for dinner.

beach tribe 02-16-2015 05:46 PM

I'm definitely ready to get back outside and do some fishing, its going to be a while yet though.

Sucks.

I should probably go get some gear at Scheels before temps and prices go back up though.

stumppy 02-16-2015 07:12 PM

I've had the fever bad lately. Bought a new Pflueger ultralite, been to Bass Pro a few times here lately, restocking the tackle boxes. This next month or two is going to go by sooooo slow. Can't wait to try out the new rig on some river smallies.

stumppy 02-20-2015 09:32 AM

There's got to be someone on here thats been fishing lately. Come on, I got the fever bad.
Lets hear about your latest attempt to drown some worms.

Iowanian 02-20-2015 09:53 AM

Next weekend we're going on a bender of building fish structure to set out on the ice.

We'll be doing a bunch of the pvc/plastic trees/pineapples that I like, and some structures built of pallets and stuffed with cedar trees.

I'm excited for my pond this coming summer. In the first year, the bass went from fingerlings to averaging over 13". I fed the cats all summer, and the bluegill came up alot to feed also. The pan fish are definitely eating size now.

I've been putting a few gallons of minnows in twice/year, and installed a new gadget I'm working on as well as a solar bug zapper in a long pole to drop bugs in all night.
I'm considering fixing a small pond I had drained and using it for minnows only, and trapping them to sell/dump into ponds I fish or am stocking in my area.

Hopefully I'll actually have time to fish this year between work, farm stuff and kids summer sports.

Sounds like your feeding program is really working, from fingerling to 13 inch in one year is awesome growth.

Were they 13" last year ? If so then I'd think 15" would be the norm this year. I don't know much about growth rates but if they hit 15"(About 2 lbs) or bigger this year that means nothing but fun all day long.
The minnow pond sounds like a good idea. Would it be feasible to grow crawdads with the minnows ?

Those are some big ass crappie. The biggest one I've ever seen was an 18.5 " one caught in a pond in Dade County, Mo. I'd give my left nut to still have access to that pond.

That is a big ass crappie.

Several years ago I was fishing on Table Rock Lake here in Mo. Middle of a hot summer day and fishing was slow so I started trolling crank baits. I hooked about and had a hell of a fight on my hands. Finally landed the biggest white bass I had ever seen. It was almost 8 lbs. After me and my buddy stowed our gear I went hauling ass back to the marina. You couldn't have slapped the smile off my face.
About 3/4 of the way back a word popped into my mind. Hybrid. It seemed like I'd heard or read something about hybrids being released into Table Rock. So I stopped the boat and pulled my state record fish out of the live well to look him over again. Sure enough, my white bass just didn't look quite right.
Damn it damn it damn it. I'm just glad I didn't go running into the marina hollering about my state record white bass.

Pretty sure I know the answer to this but checking the braintrust of CP.

Been charging my trolling motor deep cycle battery getting it ready off and on for a month or so. Each time I go to charge it, I check the volts and it reads about 12.1. Well I charged it all day yesterday and it never completed at 2 amps. It usually does complete but takes some time like all day. It read 14.1 or something like that when I stopped yesterday. Put it back on this morning.

It is 5 years old this spring. It may not be toast but not sure I should trust it under a heavy load if I have motor problems. What does the planet think.? TIA.

The new season of River Monsters starts tonight at 8 central, this time he's after a supposed 20 foot creature in a Canadian lake.

He says we havent seen every monster out there yet, but I'd bet good money that what he ends up with is a sturgeon... and he's already been there and done that in Alaska.

I'm gonna break something if he suckers me on this...

Damn, 21 inches is no joke.

Went last week with no luck nor even a nibble, but the warmer weather is here to stay it seems, they must be ready to come up into the shallows and get warm.

Went out for our annual family Good Friday fishing tournament. My son and I ended up with 18 crappie >10" (most between 11" and 12 1/2")and he had one 14 3/4 (just 1/4" short of his "Master Angler).
We had a total of eight boats and 22 guys out. Son and I finished second to my dad, his best friend, and my brother who ended up with 17 keepers (10 crappie and 7 white bass). The rules seem to change from year to year :) but as long as we all get together, I'm OK with us not getting the trophy.

You florida mfers make me absolutely green with envy... some of the very best freshwater fishing in the nation, and that's not even mentioning the ocean fishing.

Catch a bullshark from the beach?... man, what a high, I could literally get high on that.

I've had my eye on Pensacola as a place to live for a little over a year now, could easily see myself there very soon... I WANT that weather, I WANT those fishing and outdoors opportunites and I WANT that "just big enough, but just small enough" beach town vibe.

Busted the kayak out, you werent fooling around eh?

If 21 doesn't top you out, then that's a reeeally nice pond... what was your surface bait?

Always heard that a diving rattler is best when its still chilly, something loud and showy to make them shake off the sluggishness and strike.

In late may Ill throw hollow frogs, jitterbugs, even go old school with hulla poppers. Late afternoon/evening the big fish get aggressive post spawn. Right now water is still pretty cold so very slow plastic crawdads carolina rigged work well.

I have a NuCanoe Frontier that is a kick to fish out of.

It's part of one of the best stretches of beach in the world IMO. And I would know.
white quarts sand is the BEST.
You can drive the road on the beach a few miles and be all alone on that MFer too if you so choose.
I miss it, I really do. I miss the small town feel, and how you can cruise the beach from Alabama to Destin, Fl Right on the water with minimal congestion.
This shit down here is a ****ing zoo. The population makes it crazy. Luckily the bass are about 20 feet from my back door.
if you do head that way look for a spot in Gulf Breeze. Good neighborhoods in there.
The best fishing is in Orange beach on the FloraBama line, though.

Hitting Lake Texoma on Friday with my family. Have a guided striper/catfish trip planned. I haven't caught a catfish in 10+ years.

Can someone tell me why these bastards keep shaking my ****in hook?
Yes, I set the damn thing.
Do I need to bend them in or some shit?
I shouldnt be missing this many fish.

I'm almost finished with my fishing invention in Autodesk Inventor.
You know when you see that cool, simple gadget and think, man, I should have thought of that.
Well, I thought of that.
I've already done the research and it doesn't exist, and it is freakin genius.
I'm gonna wait till I get some shit in motion before posting it.
Don't want somebody going China on my idea.
Its a fishing accessory, and a must have for the serious angler.
If I can get it to market everyone in this thread gets one.
Ill post my Autodesk drawings of the rod and reel a little later.
Reel works and everything.
Been Adesk certified for about 7 years now.

I didn't catch shit this am.
Gonna try again after lunch.
Peacock bass are are spawning. I could catch 100 of those bastards if I wanted to get some crickets.
They are freaking everywhere. You would think the big bass would be trying to eat em but I didn't see a single largemouth anywhere.

We got it out on the water Saturday. Ran it for about 2.5 hours breaking the motor in. Checked out the trolling motor, depth finders, live wells, etc. Everything checks out great so far.

I'm posting just so I can get this invention. I got shut out my last time out to the Ozarks but I was just fishing off our dock and the lake was down quite a bit.

That sounds like a monstrous thrill.

I have a NuCanoe Frontier that is a kick to fish out of.

Seems I've always heard they need something fast and loud to make them strike this early, but I certainly believe there is no one way to catch fish... I'll try some soft plastics worked slow next time out.

Ocean fishing is like the Super Bowl of fishing IMO.

Man, you just sold me on that place so bad.

Thanks for sharing the pics of your favorite honey hole... and oh yeah, count me in for your new fishing device :thumb:

Knock 'em dead, nothing like being out on the water on a beautiful day.

beach tribe 04-13-2015 03:01 PM

Hit the lake with a buzz bait today from 6 am to noon, and it was glorious. Watching them roll that top water lure is is a hell of a thrill.

Also went home to TN and caught 16 bass in 2 days. If you put them all together they might equal 3 of what I pull in down here, though.

Tip: Been trying lots of different kinds of line lately.
20lb test spiderwire is by far the best Ive used to this point.
I swear to god if the line is too thick you cant get the action you need for maximum strikes and anything weaker than 15 the big boys will take yo shit back to the deep with em.
The spiderwire seems to be doing great thus far.

beach tribe 04-13-2015 03:05 PM

Tip 2: When texas rigging a worm through trash. Jig it a little and then just let it sit there.
Im talking like 45 seconds. Jig and repeat. Those big boys need time to think about it sometimes.

beach tribe 04-13-2015 03:11 PM

Set the **** out of the hook and then pull them in slowly with the Rod pointed parallel to the ground and the bank and guide them along the bank as you pull them in.

Its fun to watch them jump but you risk them shaking your hook. Ive lost more than I can count in the last few months. This has really cut down on that.

beach tribe 04-13-2015 03:21 PM

Oh, one more thing.
Used my prototype this morning and regardless of what happens I will never be able to live without it from this point forward. It served great purpose and worked exactly as intended.
Even my woman is impressed with it and my design renderings.

mr. tegu 04-13-2015 03:33 PM

You aren't afraid of gators when fishing from the bank?
