That reminds me that our cat Loki recently walked by a candle and got a little section of his fur burned by it. He has really long fur so he didn't notice but it sure had a weird smell.

Nah, he jumps in there all the time. Wife and I have both gotten in the habit of doing a cat count before we turn the dryer on... and you just can't keep him out. Right after I took that pic I drug him out, set him down out of the laundry room, and he literally sprinted right past me and jumped back in.

so last night I'm sitting on the floor playing with the lil bugger and he starts getting tired. when he gets tired he snuggles up against ya before going to sleep. still in that pack mentality having 8 brothers and sisters. he'd been playing between my legs with a toy and snuggles up into my crotch. I'm thinking yay.....I'm going to get 20/30 minutes peace! he snuggles in and pow.....he bites my frigging dick! I'm wearing thin gym shorts......(no peanut butter was involved)......and his teeth are like sharks teeth so I'm all......FUUUU*******! I scream and jump up and the wife is yelling dammit you scared the puppy and I scream HE BIT MY DICK!

man....I'm telling ya....it ****ing HURT!!!! I ran to the bathroom to see if he drew blood.

A 3-year-old North Dakota boy who disappeared for nearly seven hours was later found under the protective cover of the family’s pet dog, authorities said.


Carson Urness disappeared from his family’s 10-plus acre property in Cooperstown, North Dakota, around 7:30 p.m. Monday after being let out to play while his mom worked inside the home, the boy’s father told ABC News.
“She checked on him again at 7:30 and he was gone,” Carson’s father, Brock Urness, said of his wife, Courtney, who was inside taking care of the couple’s 11-month-old daughter while Carson played.


“She looked around frantically for about 30 minutes and then called me,” Urness said. “And I said, ‘Well, where’s Cooper?’ and she said, ‘Cooper is not here either.’”


Cooper is the family’s dog — a German Shepherd, Labrador and Golden Retriever “mutt,” as Urness calls him — that the family adopted three years ago after he was left on the side of the road near a relative’s home.
The Urnesses searched for Carson until 8:30 p.m. when they called 911. Less than 30 minutes later, the local police and fire departments had launched an aerial and ground search for Carson, aided by 200 neighbors, family and friends from Cooperstown, population about 800.


“They had an airplane here searching for him and 60 four-wheelers and people looking on foot and didn’t find anything,” Urness said.


Just before officials planned to call off the search for the night, around 2:30 a.m., officials decided to send out one last four-wheeler for a final sweep of the property.


“That four-wheeler found him about a mile away from our house, in the middle of one of our fields by a pasture,” Urness said. “Carson was in tall grass but when they shone lights down to sweep it, the dog stuck its head out.”


Carson was found safely underneath Cooper, who was laying on the boy, presumably to protect him from the 40-degree temperatures that night.
Both Cooper and Carson were uninjured, save for Carson’s cold feet, which were the only body part of his that Cooper did not cover.


“Carson told his mom that Cooper stayed on top of him and kept him safe and warm,” Urness said. “He told her that he was a little scared when it got dark because he doesn’t like the dark.”


Urness believes his son ended up one mile away from their home after watching Urness leave the property on a tractor, heading east.
“I think he saw us from his bedroom window leaving and he wanted to go where we were so he walked,” Urness said. “Cooper doesn’t leave the yard but since they’re best friends he went and followed him.”


The aerial search gave the family a false sense of hope early on when the helicopter picked up activity but it turned out to be a skunk. Urness said he and his wife became really worried when a search dog did not pick up any scent of Cooper, but were happy the family dog was there to protect their son.


“We’re very thankful for the police and local fire department here and all the people with horses and four-wheelers and the walkers,” Urness said. “We’re very grateful that they all came and looked and helped us.”

2 years ago I rescued a catahoula mix from the shelter in Maryville MO. He was 7 months old when I got him and was thoroughly scarred emotionally. I worked with him for almost a year but he was just scared of everything including people. He was viciously protective in almost every situation and I had to get rid of him.

I gave him over to a rehab/rescue group that said they would train him as a service dog. I found out later that he saved a woman with MS from drowning...

R.I.P. Molly. :(

Thanks. It wasn't totally unexpected as she was getting pretty old (15.5 years) but it's still hard. Picking up her toys out of the yard and putting all of her stuff away was really tough. We've had her a long time and it just seems like there's a hole there now.

That makes two pets I've lost in the last 9 months. That sucks.

Good eye. Yes, it's actually a Shih tzu and Maltese mix. Good stock and simply an unexpected litter. They had over 50 people show up early for the adoption event- he had 2 brothers and a sister. Luckily I reserved him and filled out the adoption paperwork the day before. I learned that lesson after trying to adopt another pup that was posted after 9pm last Wed and when I called about adopting him at like 8am the next morning, he was already adopted.

That's a cute pup, but I couldn't be happier with the little guy I able to rescue.

Apparently termed a Teddy bear breed, but that's just a marketing buzz term. Can't see it in the pics, but he's got a brown tail and at the end are 2 black rings and the last couple of inches are all white to the tip. Cool markings - sort of looks like a paint brush or whatnot.

Its annoying that people now give mutts cutesy names and then try to charge big money for dogs that used to have to give away because they weren't purebred. I don't know if you paid anything for your dog but I've seen it around here a lot lately, even for rescues (that come with large "re-homing" fees).

Ya, and I only paid the donation fee that goes to the shelter and things like cost of food, shots, getting fixed, vet care, getting him chipped, etc.

Peanuts in the adoption fee by comparison of what a breeder would charge and I did my homework on the shelter to vet their reputation and care for rescues. So I don't contribute to my own guilt for so many unwanted pets- even if it's not purely altruistic.

But I know what you mean- I've been suspicious of some rescues that seem more like fronts for breeders. Though a lot of rescues will come from breeders if a pup isn't sold after x amount of time, or is returned for whatever reason. Cooper and his litter mates were born March 19, so he's really young.

This is Lily (Tiger Lily), our latest rescue. She had apparently been a stray but had come into the shelter already spayed so may have been abandoned. I don't know why someone would do that because she is super friendly and sweet. Their loss is our gain, I guess.

She was tiny and skinny, only a little over 6 lbs when we got her in March. She is now at 9 lbs and it isn't all fat. The shelter thought she was around 2 years but I think she is barely out of kittenhood.

I did one of those DNA tests and got the results back last week. They could identify 5 breeds; Miniature Pinscher, Cocker Spaniel, Basenji, American Staffordshire Terrier, and Great Dane. I would say that qualifies her as a genuine mutt.

The test was pretty cool, they made a whole packet of information about the breeds, how the test was determined, etc.

LOL at that 3rd pic of the cat. Usually when I see pics like that I envision them singing Opera or Death Metal.

It looks like she's playing air guitar, so it must be Death Metal.

Heres Dodger and Betty. He's a border collie mixed with a fence jumper almost 3 yrs old. Smartest most obedient damn dog Ive ever had. He pretty much goes everywhere with me. And Betty, my deaf 17 year old beagle. She was a hell of a rabbit dog back in the day and has always been a great member of the family. She pretty much does whatever she wants nowadays which is mostly sleeping.. She will ocassionaly grace me with a little bit of attention, lol and barely tolerates Dodger.

Our new kitty we rescued. She was a true feral cat living along the river.

We were walking along and my wife took a gamble and just snatched her up and adopted her. Got her fixed, shots, the whole nine.

We haven't been able to come up with a name that sticks, but she makes a noise very similar to the noise the predator makes, plus she's a freakin beast that likes to fight, so we've been calling her predator. It's a female cat, but you can tell she's a huntress that loves to kill.

She appears to be nearly 100% Siamese except for a jutting bottom chin and some white spots on her back toes.

Here's our newest pup. Pictures from when we picked him up from the breeder. He wouldn't leave that blanket. She ended up having to send the blanket home with us.

Very cute. I saw a rescue when I got Cooper that looked almost identical.


Anyone have suggestions or trial and error tips for pups?

Anything is welcome for training, housebreaking, diet, grooming ( for me especially dealing with keeping his face clean from weepy eyes), vaccinations, etc, etc.

I found a suggestion for socializing him with older dogs who don't want all that puppy craziness of taking them out for extended periods to tire them out and then putting them together for a few hours. Does wonders for introducing the pup, and incorporate him with established dogs. Really warms the older dog(s) up to taking on a protective / mentor role as opposed to creating stress, jealousy, and aggressive bad behavior.

Today Leonidas is 6 months old, road tripped to pet store for treats and groomed for nail trim.

I had a rough week with my little kitty Mama Cat. She's the black and white maine coon tuxedo cat that I've had for 16 years. She had an infected tooth, and the vet had to sedate her to pull it yesterday. I was very anxious, because putting older cats under is very very risky. But she pulled through, and got to come home last night. Monday and Tuesday I hardly slept worrying about her. But looks like as long as she keeps eating and has no complications, she'll be OK. She's my sweetie.

We had to put down our Golden yesterday. Rescued him from the pound. Had him for 12 years in our family.

all of our dogs are rescues' 2 of which we've had for 12 years, and they were united within about 5 months of each other. It's going to be a scenario like in "Where The Red Fern Grows" when one of them kicks the bucket.

So sorry to hear about your dog BRC. I've lost three kitties in the past year. It's been rough.

I don't have the privilege of posting pics yet. My last chocolate lab was an English lab, huge square head (looked like a Rottweiler), huge chest, short legs and tail. He was 110 - 115 pounds most of his life. He had 3 layers of fur and never got cold or tired of swimming. His name was Cortez, or Tezzo. Named him after Cortez Kennedy. he was one of the smartest dogs I have ever seen. People always commented about his ability to read them without saying a word. Awesome dog and was my best friend. My oldest child was born when tezzo was 4 YO and he protected him and my other son like they were his own offspring.
Man I still miss him.
I had him put down the day after thanksgiving day 2012. I didn't want another dog but my wife and kids started pestering me in January 2013. They wanted a pocket dog. NFW. We still had one of our Manx cats and I just couldn't see getting a tiny pup and watching the old cat (14 YO at the time) kick it's ass. I called the breeder I got Tezzo from and she said they had frozen the sperm of tezzo's father and the last litter from him would be born in early March. How could I turn this down? My now 1.6 YO gigantic chocolate lab is named Wilson and is a handful. He is 110 pounds and growing. He looks nothing like tezzo, long body, tall and lanky and extremely long tail that cleans off coffee tables, hits you in your thigh, brakes window blinds etc. He is huge and still growing. He doesn't have the short muzzle and square head though. He is pretty smart though and has a lot of personality traits tezzo had.

The cat, he is now 17 YO and is still going strong. Sometimes I wish he would pass just so I can sleep through the night. He head buts me religiously at 1:30 AM every day. It's a Manx thing.

I have a cat that religiously stood on me and wanted cuddles at 4:30 a.m. every morning. For other reasons I won't go into, we've had to ban the cats from the bedroom, and now that he can't do it I kind of miss it. I know it's out of love, and as irritating as it could be, it was sweet.

Thats good. To me, dogs return 10 fold what you invest in them. If you look at my avatar right above Dodgers head you can barely see Betty. She's my 18 yr old beagle. Had her since she was 6 weeks old. She's made it through the kids growing up and leaving the house, a divorce, and two other dogs passing on. She used to be a hell of a rabbit dog but nowadays she does a lot of sleeping. Still pretty spry , can still jump up on the bed , couch, and chairs. And doesn't take any shit from Dodger. Being a typical female the little bitch won't hardly give me the time of day. If I sit next to her she'll get up and move. Pretty funny actually. Anyways, not looking forward to the day she goes down. Thats gonna be a tough one.

I've been fighting major depression for a couple of weeks. My Mama Cat who I've had for 18 years, is down to a few days. I had to have one of her teeth pulled in October, and she developed a tumor in her jaw. She's stopped eating, and I'm probably going to have to take her in over the weekend.

She's slept by my side for 18 years. I don't have any kids, so this is extremely hard for me. My wife and I have lost three of our kitties in the last year, this would be number four, and the one we've had for the longest time. The other three were all boy cats, and for some reason I could deal with that. This is my girl cat, and has been by far my favorite and one of the great loves of my life. I've had no joy at all for about a month now. Just numb. No words. It's time to let her go, but it's breaking my heart to do so. Christmas is going to suck this year without her.

Please keep a good thought for Mama cat and me over the next few days.

Man I'm sorry to hear that. It's amazing when a pet transcends the title of pet and becomes a beloved family member. It's equally hard to let them go. My thoughts are with you sir.

Me and the wife adopted Kendall (I hated the name at first as well) but soon enough she was as much home to us as anyone.

I really do think adopting a dog as a part of therapy or after a significant loss can be a huge help.

Me and my wife both had a loss at the same time and oddly enough the dog brought us together...

So sorry to hear that. I had similar feelings when I had to put My Rosebud down a few years ago. It's so, so hard to do, but know when it's time that you made the right decision. Part of being a responsible pet owner is doing what's best for the animal, even when it may break your heart to do so.

Take comfort in the fact you have given her so much love and affection. They aren't all as lucky as she is.

I'm not much of a cat guy, but when I have to do that to my dog, I'm going to cry like a bitch.

Yesterday I had to take Mama Cat to the vet to relieve her pain. He had gotten sick and weak, and could not longer walk or lift her head. The vet said that she was a very tough kitty, and lasted much longer that we thought she would. She made it to Christmas and New Years, which I think was her gift to me. I'm going to miss her terribly. She slept next to me for 18 years and was one of the great joys of my life. I'm glad she's no longer suffering, the last couple days were very tough. I had her cremated, so this spring I can lay her ashes to rest in our kitty garden in the back yard, and make it nice. Yesterday my boy cats Meesh and Neighbor Cat were cruising around the house looking for her. Meesh slept in Mama Cat's favorite overstuffed chair last night, which is where Mama Cat spent her last week. It was very sad. It's amazing how the pets in the house know what's going on.
