We are definitely leaving the Midwest at some point. I just can't do it anymore.

I hear you but I just will never leave Iowa. I love it here and now I have to many grandchildren anchoring me down. I think the key to maintain outside activities throughout the winter. I have my hockey rink, cross country skiing, walks, disc golf if weather permits.
My other strategy is 2-3 weeks in Mexico in February

My grandparents started going to Texas in 1964. They were 55 and 49. By that time, my Grandfather had terrible arthritis-many years of horse drawn everything and working with his hands. By the time he got to Tulsa, he was better. He could not tolerate cold, not even AC.

When my sister got married-1988, she wanted a December wedding. They said there was no way they would be there if it was December. I get it but still a bit selfish. It only would have been 3 days if they played their cards right.

I never saw them at Christmas--ever. Just phone calls and letters.
Not sure I could do that to future grandchildren, a few weeks and months yes, with visits in between.

My brother in law (60) is in Palm Springs all winter and does not like to come back. Then wonders why his grandchildren do not know him as well. Hmmm.

Many schools here closed for cold and wind chill. After a 4 day break for us.
We had Friday off for grades. Sat, Sun, MLK, and now today.

ptlyon 01-21-2025 08:54 AM

Our city school (SUX) had school scheduled Monday, no MLK day off. They canceled city school but all the other rural towns had late starts. Low Monday morning was 2 below with a -18 wind chill.

2 hour late start this morning, with a 26 below wind chill.

That isn't what global warming means but ok.

displacedinMN 01-21-2025 11:53 AM

I'm sure he knows.

But snow in the south is not unusual no matter what nuts today say. We have had times of snow in all lower 48 and all 50 states.

Days like today happen. People forget that and in today's world, people are stupid.

I think most here know this too.

ptlyon 01-21-2025 12:09 PM

Weather I don't like = climate change

TEX 01-21-2025 12:30 PM

Got 3" - 6" of snow here on Galveston Island, depending on where you're at. Personally, I got about 5 inches of snow in my yard. My dog is having a blast! All in all, it's pretty cool. Nobody doing anything crazy, like driving off the sea wall. Yet...

The older I get, the more I understand the Snowbird People in Florida and Arizona.

Well it is supposed to be a low of 46 degrees here later this week… and only warming up to about 67 degrees for a high.

RollChiefsRoll 01-21-2025 01:55 PM

We’re easily over three inches here in the Mobile area and it’s still coming down strong. Absolutely insane.
