This guy is showing everything you would hope for from a rookie in his first few games...it's still very early but looks like Veach landed another winner.

He just pushes them off like little bitches and then gets back on track for the sack. I can't stop watching it.

Its preseason. Honestly nothing we've seen yet really matters. God I hate preseason.

It's better than him not showing anything...yes? He's had consecutive sacks in his first ever NFL games, albeit preseason,...and has been in the backfield a lot.

What else would you hope to see at this point?

My point was he looks like he can already play at this level....I'm not anointing him anything....this is the first time I've mentioned any of the picks.

I've been watching football long enough that when a green-ass rookie flashes out of the gate then repeats it the following week...it's a good sign.

Dominating 2 guys at once staying with the play doesn't mean anything? Sir that would be an impressive play in camp practice. You have no idea what you're talking about

It tells you all you need to know that OCs are already attempting to double team him. Preseason or not they see the same thing that everyone but you seems to.

And I'm a guy who agrees that there are a lot of preseason hot takes here that won't stand up too long once the season starts.

But this isn't one of them.

Pre-season is indeed largely meaningless, particularly in terms of overall result and things like chemistry, since the purpose is evaluational instead of result-centric.

But certain things you can contextualize and realize shows true promise, even in an evaluation setting.

If a receiver runs for the EZ and is clocked at an unprecedented top speed, that means he has a capability that can be very useful.

If a D-lineman were to [lets take it to a ridiculous extreme] grab an O-limeman with one arm and throw that 300+ lbs man clear into the bleachers, you'd say 'wow, that's a lot of power' not 'meh, that's only a 3rd string 300# man.'

Karlaftis' display thus far GUARANTEES nothing, but it DEMONSTRATES capabilities that aren't just going to disappear against better or more focused competition either. If it were just 1-v-1 power matchups, you could say he's squaring off on underpowered opposition, but it's shift and lean and change direction and tenacity and follow-through.

Not the same as a guarantee of regular-season performance, but more durable and dependable metrics than can simply be discounted as being due to inferior competition.

What's most impressive to me is how heavy his hands are. He just looks like a guy who's not going to be fun to play against. Now I doubt he'll have the stamina as a rookie to really take full advantage of that, but by as early as next year he's going to be a guy who's wearing dudes out by the 4th quarter.

And I'm gonna keep an eye on him after the whistle. I'll bet you see a lot of OTs that give him shoves/smacks after the play is over. He may draw a penalty or two this year. Guys that play with that level of aggression and with those heavy hands just irritate linemen.

I like the motor tag especially right now. Still plenty of unknowns about how he will play. I’d imagine plenty of ups and downs as he learns and others adjust to him.

But the motor thing feels like a certainty to me. We know that he will work relentlessly on every snap. Probably stealing some wins he should have otherwise lost.

Rainbarrel 08-21-2022 07:05 AM

Mitch called him the Greek Engine then went to the Locomotive. The Greek Engine was the better choice

Chris Meck 08-21-2022 07:07 AM

Nah, you can take plenty from pre-season play, if you watch closely and evaluate.

First you have to know what the raw material is, and this is where the RAS scores carry weight. Even knowing that height is perhaps weighted unfairly, it's still a useful starting spot.

Karlaftis was what, a 9.23, something like that? Excellent.

Then you hear that he's a smart kid, and he wants to be great, and that he is constantly working-superior work ethic.

Then you see it all, the power, the relentlessness, the athleticism on the field as he embarasses grown men across from him.

And you can say to yourself-

Self, that will PLAY on Sundays.

Karlaftis is a far superior physical specimen to Hali. I'm sorry, that's just true.

Hali was a high effort player, but he really only had the one move, and he wasn't all that powerful, and he wasn't all that fast. But he had max effort every snap, he did have that.

Karlaftis is on another level athletically. Now, will he achieve the same level of play over his career? That remains to be seen, but early returns and a small sample size says yes.

If any player is going to self-evaluate and correct, it’s this dude.

Pre-draft, I heard an interview with his college coach. Obviously, the coach is biased, but I think it’s pretty clear from all accounts how hard this guy works.

I want to take a second snd give props to Frank Clark.

That dude is spending tons of time with the kid working on this exact thing. Timing the snap. Reading cues and getting an immediate advantage at the snap.

I know Cullen is making an impact on everyone across the board, but Frank deserves some acknowledgment for helping Furious George as well.

Anyone else think that if that play happens with Mahomes at QB he just wings the ball against his body towards the back left corner of the end zone and tries to let his receiver (the guy Williams came off of to cover the underneath route) beat the safety since he'd have inside position and a lot of green in front of him?

But nobody else can/should try that.

EDIT: 2 high look - Mahomes probably puts it more to the middle and tries to split the safeties. But I'm betting he absolutely hucks that ball out there. Taking a sack there does nothing but set up a punt. Mahomes would rather just throw a pick than let that play die.

DJ's left nut 08-23-2022 09:10 AM

Man - if Karlaftis doesn't make that move, Wentz has a TON of space up where he was rolling. He probably can't squeeze the ball in on that out route for the 1st down, but he can probably run it for 5-6 yards and set up a much easier FG. He probably should've been able to get to the 28ish had he gotten clear of the pocket. Karlaftis pretty directly took points off the board there by forcing the punt.

BossChief 08-23-2022 09:20 AM

It’s so cool going back and listening to pre draft and post draft stuff and listening to Veach and Borgazzi talk about having conversations about moving up to take Karlaftis but using their intel identifying v that they don’t need to and how they never thought McDuffie would be even a possibility to get with a trade up. Both Karlaftis and McDuffie look like top 5 pick quality players.

Veach and Borgazzi are true life cheat codes.

Iirc the over under in Vegas was 6.5 sacks as I’ll gladly take the over and let you name the amount of wager.

Shitposting is all well and good but I can get that almost anywhere else online. I come here for the discussion and that only happens from about August to about April.

The dead months are better spent doing something slightly more productive. LOL

Disagree. The shitposting quality on this site has been refined and aged like a fine wine. Most other places you're usually either banned early or dealing with degeneracy that gets you put on watch lists just for associating with it. Almost ideal balance here.
