This guy is showing everything you would hope for from a rookie in his first few games...it's still very early but looks like Veach landed another winner.

He just pushes them off like little bitches and then gets back on track for the sack. I can't stop watching it. |

What else would you hope to see at this point? My point was he looks like he can already play at this level....I'm not anointing him anything....this is the first time I've mentioned any of the picks. I've been watching football long enough that when a green-ass rookie flashes out of the gate then repeats it the following week...it's a good sign. |

And I'm a guy who agrees that there are a lot of preseason hot takes here that won't stand up too long once the season starts. But this isn't one of them. |

But certain things you can contextualize and realize shows true promise, even in an evaluation setting. If a receiver runs for the EZ and is clocked at an unprecedented top speed, that means he has a capability that can be very useful. If a D-lineman were to [lets take it to a ridiculous extreme] grab an O-limeman with one arm and throw that 300+ lbs man clear into the bleachers, you'd say 'wow, that's a lot of power' not 'meh, that's only a 3rd string 300# man.' Karlaftis' display thus far GUARANTEES nothing, but it DEMONSTRATES capabilities that aren't just going to disappear against better or more focused competition either. If it were just 1-v-1 power matchups, you could say he's squaring off on underpowered opposition, but it's shift and lean and change direction and tenacity and follow-through. Not the same as a guarantee of regular-season performance, but more durable and dependable metrics than can simply be discounted as being due to inferior competition. |

But the motor thing feels like a certainty to me. We know that he will work relentlessly on every snap. Probably stealing some wins he should have otherwise lost. |
Mitch called him the Greek Engine then went to the Locomotive. The Greek Engine was the better choice
|
Nah, you can take plenty from pre-season play, if you watch closely and evaluate.
First you have to know what the raw material is, and this is where the RAS scores carry weight. Even knowing that height is perhaps weighted unfairly, it's still a useful starting spot. Karlaftis was what, a 9.23, something like that? Excellent. Then you hear that he's a smart kid, and he wants to be great, and that he is constantly working-superior work ethic. Then you see it all, the power, the relentlessness, the athleticism on the field as he embarasses grown men across from him. And you can say to yourself- Self, that will PLAY on Sundays. |

Furious George is so obvious. 2nd place for "My Gyro". |
It's the preseason for Mitch too. Maybe he'll work in some Mountain Dew flavors Thursday

Hali was a high effort player, but he really only had the one move, and he wasn't all that powerful, and he wasn't all that fast. But he had max effort every snap, he did have that. Karlaftis is on another level athletically. Now, will he achieve the same level of play over his career? That remains to be seen, but early returns and a small sample size says yes. |

We need to get Karlaftis connected with Giannis, to get him to become a Chiefs fan.

Admittedly, he overdid it on a few of those rushes too, and found himself washed out behind the QB and out of the play. But he'll learn...

That dude is spending tons of time with the kid working on this exact thing. Timing the snap. Reading cues and getting an immediate advantage at the snap. I know Cullen is making an impact on everyone across the board, but Frank deserves some acknowledgment for helping Furious George as well. |
Quote:
But nobody else can/should try that. EDIT: 2 high look - Mahomes probably puts it more to the middle and tries to split the safeties. But I'm betting he absolutely hucks that ball out there. Taking a sack there does nothing but set up a punt. Mahomes would rather just throw a pick than let that play die. |
Man - if Karlaftis doesn't make that move, Wentz has a TON of space up where he was rolling. He probably can't squeeze the ball in on that out route for the 1st down, but he can probably run it for 5-6 yards and set up a much easier FG. He probably should've been able to get to the 28ish had he gotten clear of the pocket. Karlaftis pretty directly took points off the board there by forcing the punt.
|
It’s so cool going back and listening to pre draft and post draft stuff and listening to Veach and Borgazzi talk about having conversations about moving up to take Karlaftis but using their intel identifying v that they don’t need to and how they never thought McDuffie would be even a possibility to get with a trade up. Both Karlaftis and McDuffie look like top 5 pick quality players.
Veach and Borgazzi are true life cheat codes. |
