It was the opposite. Most of us fans were puzzled why it wasn't obviously going to be Watsons spot but the coaches didnt. Maybe just trying to light a fire under Watson and knew the whole time.

Yes, because when there's an open competition, coaches always come out and declare a favorite to the media.

Watson ultimately won the job, so it's not at all a stretch to think he was the favorite by mid TC and coach speak quotes from PCs mean absolutely nothing.
