I don't think we can safely say either way on that. It came out that both parties were wanting to wait on the Quinnen Williams deal, because I think both the Chiefs and Jones camp think he's worth more than that, because Jones camp even said he wanted to be the 2nd highest paid DT.

Maybe the Chiefs were under the impression that Jones number would come down to be closer to Williams number rather than hanging around Donald's number.

Maybe Jones camp thought Williams would get more and said that they would reassess after the Williams signing to give CJ95 more leverage to get Aaron Donald type money, and when that didn't pan out, they chose to stick to their guns.

Both camps probably had expectations of what would happen after the Williams signing, and it seems possible that both camps incorrectly assessed how the opposing camp would react to Williams signing.

The massive contract extension that Aaron Donald signed last summer is already not aging well for the Rams.

Not really, no.

If he's wanting to get to 30 or close to Donald, I don't see how Williams number means anything here.

For the same reason that Lamar Jackson became the highest paid QB in terms of AAV after this offseason. Because it's not about the number, it's about where you are compared to your peers in NFL contracts.

Aaron Donald's signing was a severe outlier. His original extension was 6 yrs/135M (22.5M AAV), which would still be good for 9th highest paid defensive player (Not DT, defensive player). Now with his current extension (31.6M AAV) He currently is the highest paid defensive player, and his contract is not proving to be bearing as much fruit as the Rams hoped for.

Quinnen Williams came in at 24M AAV, which is much more reasonable to the marketplace.

If you want to be 2nd, then being around 27.5M AAV or 28M AAV is entirely acceptable. Teams and agents' expectation of contracts change depending upon other players that are signed and the amounts they are signed too.

Essentially, Chris Jones camp wants to make Aaron Donald's contract no longer an outlier, while most GMs and front office staff I think see it as such. That's why Williams deal impacts this.

It'd be a better debate if Jones was 26, the fact that this is his 3rd contract and he's 30 is as much bigger deal, he could fall off at any time and you'll from day 1 being paying him for what he's already done not what he's going to do.

kcgreene 07-24-2023 11:43 AM

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/rankings/average/defense/

Jones would be the 2nd highest paid defensive player in the league (3rd is T.J Watt at 28M AAV), and only 1 of 19 defensive players in the league to make 20M AAV or over.

That's a tall order.

If 30 is legit, I'd not do shit, let him play out this year tag him and trade him off.

And easily the worst DTs in the nfl.

Just a reminder that there were multiple reports of the Chiefs loving Mazi Smith and even trying to trade up for him.

Might have been a reason for that. I'm just sayin

I smell a trade ...

The only benefit to trading him now (and a very small benefit at that) is that this is likely the only way the Chiefs ever get a top 10 pick with Mahomes at QB.

Trading an asset for the future draft picks and hoping that team is completely terrible.

I’m in the keep him (at least for now) camp, because we can absolutely cash in on another Super Bowl this year with Jones. Still possible without him, but we actually have a major weakness if we trade. We don’t have that completely glaring weakness right now.

chiefzilla1501 07-24-2023 01:56 PM

We have to stand our ground but....

I still stand by the fact that while we always have a legit super bowl window with mahomes, our best window by far is when we have peak Kelce and theres no guarantee how long Reid will be around. If we need to spend more today then regroup in a couple of years, I want to do it.
