Exactly. If UW and UO and UA leave then I can’t see how ASU and Utah (not a traditional PAC-12 power) save the conference. Outside of SDSU, who could that conference even add?

Must feel like that his university will get an invite if things don't work out. Or publicly trying to say the right things while planning on an exit. If the PAC loses the Seattle, Portland, Denver, and a portion of the Phoenix market after losing LA, there is zero chance they get any sort of significant deal. What markets would they even still control? SF? SLC (although that's probably as much BYU as Utah)?

KingPriest2 08-04-2023 02:07 PM

More than 30% of the Pac-12’s media rights value went out the door with USC and UCLA. Oregon, Washington and Colorado must be more than 30% of whatever value was subsequently left.

What would Apple even offer at this point? A cameo in the next season of Ted Lasso?

If there was a button that would reset things back to the 80's, I would hit it (even though Husker fan would be annoying again)....

-Bowl games that mattered
-Southwest Conference with A&M, Arkansas and Texas
-Football in the Big East
-The wishbone
-Being able to name the top handful of fullbacks
-Athletes being paid in the form of black TransAms and envelopes with cash
-Keith Jackson

With that said, I'm thankful that the B12 pulled through this, and I'm grateful that Yormark is the B12 commissioner.

A 1977 Iowa State graduate, Crow earned bachelor degrees in political science and environmental studies. At Iowa State, he was the director of the former office of science policy and research (1985-91), director of the former Institute for Physical Research and Technology (1988-91) and assistant director for planning and program development at Ames Laboratory (1985-88). He left Ames to serve as executive vice provost at Columbia University, New York City (1991-2002), before becoming Arizona State's 16th president in 2002.

Is Arizona State a required package deal to add Arizona and Utah?

If not then it seems like UConn would be a better addition than them.

UConn brings a Northeast presence with a national brand in men’s/women’s basketball.

Arizona State brings… Michael Crow.

I am not sure what metrics the Big 12 would look at as a comparison, but to me UConn adds way more value than Arizona State.

Arizona State barely adds the Phoenix market since Arizona is the flagship school in the state. Also Phoenix has a transient population and is not a college sports city.

I think if that comes down to that, I think they'll just add Arizona and re-evaluate at a later date.

I was hoping for Florida State over either ASU or Utah :harumph:

Its a traditional football power on the east coast. And not much reason to double down on both Arizona and Utah when while having 2 schools in Florida actually make sense (while not having the major players, the B12 would have a heavy presence in both Texas and Florida)

Notre Dame’s current TV deal with NBC pays them $26 million/year… less than the Big 12’s annual media rights payout per school.

Florida State as an independent would struggle to get anything close to that # since they have much less brand equity than Notre Dame football.

Yes. This one is more aligned towards ASU and Utah. The Big 12 wants to bring all 3 together as one, so that way none of the 3 can be the "suspect" that ended the Pac.

Agreed. It's still what the Big 12 wants anyways because of so many bullshit false narratives out there these days.

Media is pissed at Big 12 for destroying Pac, even though very compelling evidence shows otherwise (B1G started by poaching USC and UCLA).

Media was always rooting for Big 12 to die, twice, but now is pissed at us for fighting back?

They ****ed the wrong mother****er.

Media can suck my dick.

Long Live Big 12.

As we’ve tweeted, plan is to officially roll this out tomorrow. ASU President Michael Crow was a bit of a hurdle but it was never going to derail this.

Full coverage coming soon.

The new Big12 seems like a good BBall conference.

But WV at ASU will not be a fun game for football to watch-at 11pm Eastern.

I am not sure what metrics the Big 12 would look at as a comparison, but to me UConn adds way more value than Arizona State.

Arizona State barely adds the Phoenix market since Arizona is the flagship school in the state. Also Phoenix has a transient population and is not a college sports city.

Yormark has already said he's looking at breaking out the basketball contract. I'm guessing he'll target Uconn and Gonzaga for hoops, but as far as football value, I don't think Uconn brings much.

Plus, taking ASU was probably a negotiation point with Arizona and possibly Utah/CU.

KingPriest2 08-04-2023 04:30 PM

Lots of questions about this in the future

There's the question of whether the 12-team CFP will still reserve *six* spots for conference champions in 2024.

Exec Director Bill Hancock told me, "It’s too soon to say. The CFP Management Committee and the Board will discuss the future format when it becomes appropriate."

I think for UConn and Gonzaga, they'll open a separate contract for CMBB, and not tied to the Football Media deal.

True but ASU football vs anyone, anytime of the day usually is not a compelling game to watch.

Other than when they had Jake Plummer, I can’t recall when ASU football was nationally relevant.

The tv media deal covers both football and basketball

Arizona is in the Mountain Time Zone, so night games could start earlier like games at Colorado probably will, but your point stands.

Big 12 gonna be alright after all...

For now.

No gay ass SEC SEC SEC type chants either.

KingPriest2 08-04-2023 05:12 PM

ASU, Arizona and Utah are likely to announce Big-12 move tomorrow morning, which would take the conference to 16 teams.

Still trying to confirm if it’ll be as immediate full share members but that appears likely.

Current Bay Area sports scene…

Lost the Raiders.

Lost the A’s.

Stanford and Cal appear to be left out of a power conference.

And the Pac 12’s headquarters is (was) in San Francisco.

Honestly it was USC/UCLA that ended the PAC 12. Once they chose to leave the writing was on the wall and only a matter of time.

In due time, the B1G and SEC will whack the ACC and most likely Big 12 will absorb the scraps that have value. And like clockwork, the media will blame the Big 12 again.

West Coast folks don't give a shit about sports. They're too busy drinking soy frappe dappes and dodging human shit in the street on their way to work at a sea lion wildfire relief non-profit.
