Tough to say. They haven't made a big deal out of the "roomba" or the fairing recovery, so my guess is those will just leak out as people start seeing ships coming back.

I'm just so stoked! I wonder if they try it a 3rd time?

They've been pretty quiet about it, so I don't think we really know how they're planning the fairings. Hopefully we'll see soon!

And who knows about reusing this one again. If I had to put money on it, I'd say no since they'll probably want to learn what they can by examining any additional stress damage, but who knows?

I wonder if they gave the payload owner of of SES-10 got a discount of any sort?

Summarizing a few points I've read on the interwebs:

• Fairings had parachutes and thrusters, and they successfully directed them to a set point. Doesn't sound like they were "recovered" as in reusable this time, but it's a big step to make it possible in the future.
• The "roomba" still isn't actually in action, so this one will be brought back the "old fashioned" way.
• Falcon Heavy is currently "late summer" and will definitely use two previously-flown side boosters.
• Doesn't sound like this booster will likely re-fly due to the historic significance. Elon suggested they might give it to Cape Canaveral to be displayed (like their one in California).

OP is updated for the next launch. However, it's a national security launch that is classified, so we'll have to see what (if any) coverage we get of it. My guess is that it will be a pruned down webcast at least.

I mean, sure, It's neat as a space geek. But it really doesn't hold a candle to what SpaceX has done.

While I agree they're behind SpaceX (SpaceX is functional and making deliveries into space), Blue Origin seems to have the focus on manned flight.

I just appreciate what both are doing.

Blue Origin is probably 5+ years away from being to a point that they could reasonably be competing with SpaceX, but the advantage that they have is an enormous pile of money coming in every year through Bezos. Musk is super rich, no doubt, but he has to make his projects generate revenue. Bezos barely has a reason to care.

I wouldn't say Bezos is at Musk's level of out-of-the box thinking or altruism, but he's got more money to throw at everything, which can make a difference.

Does SpaceX have a projected plan for manned flight. I sure hope so. If they do, that could cover all the bases.

Obviously the whole point of SpaceX is sending people to Mars, and they hope to be sending people to ISS next year.

I can't wait to see Falcon Heavy fly. Last I heard, they are still planning on a launch this summer.

I don't understand the Leaning Tower of Thaicom-8 reference. That isn't a used rocket, right? Surely they wouldn't try the first launch of Heavy with used hardware.

More the latter. I know the Mars thing, but keeping people alive and some other technical details need to get worked out before they strap anybody into that rocket.

So the ISS thing will be super exciting when it happens.

Actually they are indeed flying used hardware for the first launch (both side boosters - the center core will be new). The center cores are apparently having to be manufactured differently (they had hoped that the Heavy would be nothing but 3 F9's strapped together), so it can't be used until they recover an actual FH core.

As for the launch, Elon has described it as a "high risk" mission, so I'm guessing they're confident enough in the used cores that they don't think they will be the cause of a failure. And if they're worried about it making it in the first place, better to dump two previously-flown boosters than a new one.

I get the logic.

You guys, I know this is super old news and is basically the convention at this point, but the vertical landing is just SO scifi. I can't believe it's actually happening. One of the few stupid things that were seen as futuristic back in the 50's and on has actually come to fruition.

Should be on track for a launch tomorrow night. It's interesting in that it's the heaviest payload to date (it was originally supposed to be a Falcon Heavy launch), but there won't be a landing attempt, so the webcast won't be as fun to watch.

I was hoping we'd see it burning up in the atmosphere or something (I assume that's the fairing), but it's definitely a cool view.

I want them to release the video of the booster burning up. Based on the crowd reactions on the live stream, I'm almost sure that's what they were looking at.

Agreed. Was disappointed they didn't show it. Also wanted to watch any fairing recovery attempts, but have not seen any update on that so not sure if there was one.

I think that just leaves the other side booster to test. Current NET is August for Heavy.

Yeah, that's the second time they've tested that core with the booster nose cone in place. The first time was a couple months ago if I remember right. Curious as to why they are doing it again, after putting the main core on the stand and testing it. Still waiting for a static fire of the other booster. Wonder if the center core and second side booster will get tested twice.

Really can't wait for the full stack test fire at KSC! They better have some seriously awesome video of that!

I'm curious when they do those static fires if they have the booster anchored down enough to be able to hold down a full thrust, and if so, what sort of lockdown that takes to hold that mother down. Either that or the fire is a fraction of the full blown version?
