picked up a new kayak last week. 10 ft sit on top. if the ice ever melts, i'll start taking it to a few lakes around here and start breaking it in.

I love my fishing kayak. I really want to put a fish finder on it.

yeah, big brother's had a couple and each son has one. I usually just rent one down there, but after messing w/each of theirs, I kinda decided on this one. looks like it's got enough room to store tackle, small cooler etc.

hope it works out...I'm kind of excited to get down there and play w/it.

I try to fish every year but the last two years have sucked and haven't had much chance. Also kids have destroyed my other poles so now they are older and I got my son a fishing pole for Christmas and got myself a new pole. Very excited to go again this year and make a habit of going after work and weekends. Only wont be able go much on the weeks I go on call that is every four weeks.

This year I am poised to go fishing.

Excellent, anytime you can get away for 3-4 hours, a whole day and nights even better, does a world of good even if you catch nothing but a beer buzz... out of the house, getting some sun, splashing some water, watching the wildlife... it is a Blue Ribbon blood pressure reducer.

The farther away from people and the main road you can get, the better... it betters your chances of not only catching fish, but finding your own little Eden for a few hours.

If you can drive around for a bit off the beaten path and find a spot with no garbage laying around (an unfortunate truth in so many places, lotta thoughtless scumbags out there)... you WILL catch fish and you WILL feel enriched just by hanging out for a while, catching fish or not.

It doesn't have to be an obvious fishing spot or big body of water either, some of the very best fishing is done in a spot you decide on yourself in a small pond or creek no more than 10 foot across... if theres water and very few people signs, you're gonna enjoy it.

Bottom line... find the OUT OF THE WAY places.

I like fishing off the beatin path. Down at a creek somewhere doesn't have to have much water just enough for me to know a catfish would be happy find some liver on a treble hook.

Exactly, it doesn't have to be a big chunk of water to have good fish in it... 5-10 foot wide and 3-5 foot deep on average nets all kinds of fun fishing.

Uh huh you dirty jerks, you could sell them for 4 flat all year and still get over... but NOOOOOO.

It's been one hell of a long winter around here and it's not over. Right now some of the ice on the Yellowstone river and other rivers in the area are breaking up which is great in one way but is starting to cause a lot of flooding. It’s going to be awhile before I can get to the waterways around here to swing some fly line.

R8RFAN 03-09-2014 11:59 AM

Major ice storm here , been living in the RV with the generator... Power was out for a little over 2 days.
I would have been out there this weekend... 60's both days.. Maybe next week

Easy 6 04-13-2014 05:11 PM

Tried my luck at the local lake this morning for a little bit, not a single bite on any of the artificials I was using, things just haven't heated up enough yet... every sumbitch with something that floated was out on the water and they weren't having any luck either.

Of atleast 40 different boats I watched, only one guy pulled in a very small bass, everythings still shaking off the chill.

Hows it going for the rest of you cabin fever sufferers?

If you guys/gals ever get to go to Canada fishing, I would seriously consider a fly in out post northern Ontario.
Cost about $1600/1800 per head for 7+ days that includes gas from KC and back and all the food and drink you can fly in to your private cabin and Lakes all to yourself.

20 LB + Pike caught 2010

I've rented a houseboat and fished Lake of the Woods from the Canada end... rental out of Kenora, Ontario. I wanna say it was 1800 for the boat for a week and it holds up to 6 people. Tow your boats behind as you travel and set up for the night. Good times. Great walleye fishing.

Easy 6 04-13-2014 11:29 PM

Gah that's one beautiful dinosaur you're holding redshirt... is that something you'd eat or let go?

I'm guessing a solid muscle fish like that would be something close to freshwater halibut... thick chunks of flakey white flesh and very little fat... I'm thinking fried and eaten, whats the protocol up there?

I know you directed the question to redshirt but I'm up in Michigan and we eat em. The "barely legal" ones (24" min) are the best. IF the person knows how to filet the Y bones out, they are awesome. I guess you could compare it to halibut a bit.

A lot of people pickle pike. They also steam with lemon/butter/pepper or fry them Cajun style. Perhaps redshirt can give you more than me. I prefer Walleye but there are many that like Pike over walleye.

That's exactly the kind of honest answer I was looking for, didn't know they were so bony, they sound almost as hard as filleting a carp... its like you need a true surgeon to make them edible.

Sounds like a fish I'd love to catch but would let go unless in an emergency, because of the difficulty in eating... but if I had to, yeah, I could pick those steamed bones clean.

I love Canada fishing you can throw a plain silver/ gold hook in the water and I bet you could catch a fish.

I had a Mepps white bucktail just hanging over the boat on a extra rod and one of the small pike jumped out of the water to try to eat it.

While catching Walley sometimes the big pike will try to eat it before you get to the boat, it's just crazy fishing in protected waters of Canada

nothing better

Back in the day you would club it in the head and have it on a wall and eat it, I caught a 47 inch tiger Muskie in 1981 and that's what we did dam shame... I'm all about catch and release now why destroy the blood line of this monster or any monster it's so stupid.

We let all pike go and the big Walley go, the small Walley filet up good and you can catch your supper on the way back to the cabin before dark.

Anyone that destroys a pig Pike or Muskie should be used as bait, you get a nice pic and release it, the taxidermist can make a replica for your wall.

Little pike are good eating but why bother if you have a stringer of walley to fillet and cook every night.

When I first started going to Canada we would book in lower Ontario, and they would have 6 /7 cabins and they would cook your meals, but you had to be there to eat them or go without ? Cant leave a guy a cold plate of food ive already paid for?

The guides will cook you a shore lunch, fried pike, fried taters and of course beans. Nice but I can cook better than the shit they serve and pay less for my trip.

We buy all are food and drink load it and gear in plane take off on water and land on water.
We buy Steak/ to eat with are Walley and salad, always taters and some beans, Beer and Makers Mark/ Crown Royal, if your gona do it do it right
eat and fish like a king.
We always cook more food than we can eat... propane stove/freez/hotwater heater/fridge, but solar power 5 volts light, no air no fan, one emg sat phone.
And the best a shithouse to dump in.

Booked an outpost and never looked back, you gota have your shit together its hard work fishing all day, the good ones have only one cabin on the main lake, there is no one else fishing there. Then there are portage lakes that you can walk to and they have a boat and gas for you there.

If your lucky the last person pulled the plug and dragged the boat up on skids so it would drain. That's were you find the fish I caught and bigger Walley do a little work walk where most wont.

People are to lazy/scared/old /disabled to pack all that gear and walk on trails that may have a flag here and there to lead the way, when its to easy to stay on the main lake and catch fish like you've never caught before GPS is a must everything looks the same easy to get lost.

Nothing gets your blood flowing when you think you snagged a log, and its a big fat Pike that has not figured out he is had, when it does its an adventure every time.

Had a small pike just swallow my treble hook and I tried my best to keep it alive but it was a mess, threw it in the water I watched it float away. Out of nowhere a Bald Eagle started circling and swooped down and had its lunch on me, got a pic to prove it.

Another time im standing in the boat and I look up in the sky, a sea gull is making all kinds of noise, I shit you not that bird dived at me twice, it was freaky..
We moved on out of there feeding grounds I guess and it was not much long after that I threw my lure in the water, after my friend shut off the boat and was tying on a new rig, I gave my rod a couple radical jerks and that 20lb pike was laying just beneath where I casted.

I told my friend to start the boat and get me to deeper water, he's like what for?
I yelled "just get us out of this small cove" now!!!!

They are a load of fun to catch. They are usually quite a bit easier to catch than Musky, but you get that same type of fight if you hook a big one. You'd never be disappointed with a day fishing Pike, that's for sure. Most people throw them back because they count against the same limit as walleye, so they are in abundance.

These two tales give me wood, not only are they a beautiful fish but they fight like hell as well... its a damn shame they're pretty much nonexistent in my neck of the woods.

I did spend two vacation days two years ago at the only lake within decent driving distance that has them, Otter Lake in Palmyra Illinois... alas, no luck... but I did enjoy one fine meal of 5 very fat bluegill, so it wasn't all bad.

mr. tegu 04-19-2014 08:09 PM

Haven't caught any crappie yet. It's ridiculous.

Easy 6 04-21-2014 10:32 PM

My first fish of the year was a BEAUT, less than 13 inches but this mfer was FAT and had to have been 5 pounds, huge swollen belly, surely a pregnant female.

Caught in a small lake where everyone catfishes, very little pressure on sportfish because the water is so muddy... it was a curly tail pumpkin grub with a top flashing spinner. contrary to popular lore you CAN catch big fish on smaller lures.

Like they always say, darker colors for dark waters... I had been skunked twice in a row before this, but that fat sucker more than made up for it. Didn't even think twice about eating it, she went back, just a nice fatty to get started was its own reward.

Warm winds are finally here for good, hallelujah.

mr. tegu 04-23-2014 01:28 PM

I still have had no luck crappie fishing this year. The fish don't even seem to be in pre-spawn mode yet. Hopefully this weekend, after this current week of warm weather, will provide different results.

The crappie are just starting to show up near the bank in the evening and early morning in and around the KC area. It'll be full bore spawn by this weekend, and that should last abuot three weeks. Time to get out there. I'm heading to Truman lake tonight to fish tonight and tomorrow

I hope so. I do not want to read the fishing report after it starts without me having been there for it. I love this time of year for crappie because once you find them you can have a blast catching them. And my Dad and I don't keep many, probably 10 max between us regardless of how good the fishing is, so we just go more for fun.

I have gotten skunked at Redmond as recently as 10 days ago, so I am hesitant to return so soon. I know they have a huge population though and I really don't want to miss the best action before a hundred people show up fishing for meat to last them all year.

mr. tegu 04-28-2014 11:33 AM

Caught some decent size crappie this weekend and pretty good numbers overall. They were all males right on the bank hitting about a foot and a half deep. It was nice to finally catch some.

Not sure where you were fishing, but I ran down to Truman on Thursday and caught a limit by noon about 4 or 5 feet out from shore in rip rap. I was using a blue and white jig on a 1/16 oz chartreuse head that was about 18 inches under a bobber on a slow retrieve. It was a good mix of males and females. I probably caught 25 fish, and kept 15 that were all 11-12inch fish. It's just starting to heat up. This cold snap with **** it up most likely

I was on the river above Lake Perry. About 10-11 inches on the 8 keepers. A pretty large number under that which would have probably been an additional 15-20 fish. I hope this colder week doesn't ruin it too much though because I was hoping to go to two to three different places over a few days this weekend.

I saw alot of guys fishing down there when we were there, but we didn't fish over there. Usually, if they are hot down there, it's another week or two before they really heat up on the lake. It'll be mothers day weekend before its booming in the KC area lakes

They piss me off because they ruin good fishing or eat your fish you catch or take it away from the fish your trying to catch. ****ing assholes.

Rasputin 05-25-2014 12:31 AM

I still ended up with a nice tasty bass so had fun fishing. Ready go back just want to call the Turtleman and have him get rid of these ****ers. Iya iya iya iya

In58men 05-25-2014 12:35 AM

Lol.. I actually broke my sons fishing pole whacking that sumofabitch. Now I got to buy my son a new pole and later at the spot I went too close to dark I kept pulling sticks or logs and I ended up snapping my tip on my own pole. It was late and tired. I went home.

One tasty fish to show for the day.

Man, I've only caught two eaters so far this year. This time last year, I had several catfish in the freezer. My bait man had goldfish this week so I even started using them and didn't catch a catfish. The Missouri River hasn't been up much this year. Wonder if that makes a difference

HonestChieffan 05-25-2014 08:04 AM

Buddy of mine caught a 69 pounder in the Mo river on thursday. He has been catchin a bunch

My baitman said that many were catching the hell out of the catfish in the Mighty Mo too. I must be holding my mouth wrong or something

I hear babies make great bait.

That's a big fish Jeremy Wade would be proud of but puts back.

Is that the one that used to have the concrete pillars you could walk across the lake on?

I'm not sure. That was the only time I've ever been there. Seemed like there was a lot of fishing docks and some concrete looking bridge thing over part of the lake.

I've heard they're not good to eat at all, too bony and oily.

But having caught several of them they're definitely great fighters, powerful fish.

Yup. I'll fly fish topwater even when I know that subsurface will land more fish. I'd rather catch 2 bass on topwater than 10 subsurface.

They’re in their pre-spawn feed.
A friend fishing the Neosho in two days caught 5 flat heads. The smallest was over 20 lbs, the largest was right at 50 lbs and he said every one of them was full of eggs.

Fillet them and cut out the mud line then deep fry them. They taste about like white bass...

Are you black? Only reason I ask is the only people I have ever known to eat Drum fish have been black. There is an older black guy at my church who is the only guy I know who has a recipe that makes drum fish/any overly grease fish somewhat edible, I personally still wont eat them. My aunt's whole side is Mexican, they will fish for anything and eat almost anything, but they will not eat drum fish, sheephead, white bass etc etc.

stonedstooge 05-28-2014 10:11 AM

Caught my biggest fish ever Monday on the Mighty Mo River. 14 pound blue cat hit on a FRESH piece of chicken liver as soon as I tossed it in. Full of eggs too.

Part Cherokee, but mostly Irish, and love drum. Does that count?

Nope. I'm pretty white. The thing is, a lot of the reasons people don't eat certain fish are based on traditional notions that are derived from sentiments like yours. Think about it, people will eat a shitload of catfish, a fish that eats live and decaying flesh, but fail to eat a drum that eats far less disgusting material than a catfish. I'll eat just about whatever I catch, but catfish are probably my least favorite. Both white bass and drum are pretty decent eating. I'd say they're on par with smallies or largemouth....

How do you cook a drum? Do you treat them like a carp? Whoops, saw you answered this earlier. So sorry

loochy 05-28-2014 11:15 AM

Here's a nice rainbow I nailed at Taneycomo's trophy water. Sorry the picture isn't great, but it's a screen cap from a video I took. I was trying to lay my phone on a rock and capture a little bit of video while avoiding handling the fish for too long.

That is such an interesting post, with a lot of information that really I didn't think about as being true, but is. My family is predominantly Indian/Irish, I have more Cherokee Indian that anything else in my composition, and my family (dad's Indian side) has always stayed away from drum fish. My great grandmother was appalled by them, but she would eat raccoon lol (I don't partake in that either).
