What kind of horror do you like?

The one KCUnited and I discussed below is worth a watch for horror fans. This one stands out among the crowd. Not a major studio title and not layered in SFX. Just a good story driven, creepy movie.

If you're into more "Hollywood" jump scare, SFX etc style horror, let me know as id have some recommendations for that too.

Foreign movie, so you can expect foreign movie things. The kind of disturbing deaths that you really don't see in American horror. Like other foreign horror, you don't finish the movie feeling very good. It's dark, it's twisted. It wont be for everyone because of the ending, but i enjoyed it. Would recommend.

ToxSocks 08-28-2024 04:32 PM

Re-watching the trailer...the trailer just doesnt do the movie justice.

hold on......

Ari Aster?

Hereditary
Midsommar

There's others for sure, but I'd start there if you havent seen them.

KCUnited 08-29-2024 03:01 PM

Independent and foreign horror is where its at

If you're looking for "Hollywood" type stuff then it probably peaked in the 90s but that might be semantics

If I could go back in time I'd throw myself 100% into horror film creation, whether it be production, writing, makeup, whatever...

Like the 2 dudes from Summer School

I'm an old school horror flick guy. The whole "let's just try and get as many 'jump out of your seat' gags in as possible is boring.

The Exorcist
Damien Omen (I)
Alien
The Shining
Jacob's Ladder
The Thing
Poltergeist(I)
Silence of the Lambs

That sort of thing.

I think that was the only movie (the original) that gave me nightmares. "Dawn of the Dead" no problem even at a young age. For some reason my parents and brothers and sisters let me watch it right before my 3rd birthday.

"Speak No Evil" (it's a remake) comes out today which may motivate me to venture into the unwashed masses and into a movie theatre.

The original had me looking away from the screen for a few moments out of discomfort and I'm a horror move veteran.. James MacAvoy plays a really good nut job so I'm pumped to see him.

The original:

KCUnited 09-22-2024 07:49 AM

In A Violent Nature is pretty great and my kind of horror movie

I can see some being turned off by the way its filmed though

Its basically your standard stalk and kill character but is mostly filmed from behind him as he stalks through the woods and kills a bunch of people

They also use some sensory tricks such as an elongated car horn honking and other drawn out noises to create overall disturbance

Anyway I loved it. It has one of the best kill scenes I've seen in a long time

Been diving into some Folk Horror lately

I posted this in the New Movies thread but it leans more violent crime thriller than what I'd consider horror

Ben Wheatley's Kill List from 2011 is pretty good (Shudder). Hitman coming out of retirement for money encounters some wild shit. It could be a little artsy in the filming for some but I enjoyed the unsettling nature of it. Same actor as the movie linked above

Whatcha'll watching this October?

Watched Caddo Lake last night on Max

This was really well performed and produced. Super clean and artistic camera work with some legit story lines

Wouldn't call it horror but more like some M. Night As-salamu alaykum type of unsettling supernatural with some time travel elements that are always hit or miss (both in this movie)

I'd give it a solid B just for the filming and performance. Story got a little loosy goosy towards the end but otherwise entertaining

EDIT: After watching the trailer to include in this post, it is an M. Night As-salamu alaykum movie LMAO

Finally saw Late Night with the Devil. Love the whole way the story is told/framed.

The end got a bit wonky but it was very unique and well done.

Speak No Evil (2024)
7.5/10

I saw the Dutch version of this a couple years ago and liked it, including the pitch black ending which kind of sticks in your throat. This being the American remake, the hopeless ending is lightened a bit, but the final shot tells you that some of the damage is permanent. Two couples meet on a holiday in Italy and, soon after, more time together is arranged. Ulterior motives ensue. James McAvoy makes a meal out of his part, while Scoot McNairy, an actor I generally like, plays a bit of a weepy bitch counterpart. In fact, there's a very obvious effort to give his wife the dude energy once things go to shit. Nonetheless, I liked it, while giving the nod to the uglier original.

This one surprised me. Was a little over-explained at the end, a little more subtlety would have been nice. I realize that's a giant nitpick. Pretty good flick though, really enjoyed it

I didn't care for it much at all. I think i only made it halfway through tho....i guess i'll give it another try.

But from the hour or so i gave it, i remember being pretty damn underwhelmed and im not one to be overly critical, especially when it comes to horror.

Yeah, 3 and Reborn. Or maybe they’re the same movie..? I think they’re different but they’re both ****ing TERRIBLE.

Supposedly it was inspired from an old episode of Unsolved Mysteries with Robert Stack which makes it even creepier.

On these notes I'm going to avoid this like the plague. Remake ruined "The Shining" and I wished I never watched it and if you can actually make a Steven King novel great I'm not going in for sloppy seconds.

This is going on the "see grandma naked" shelf of things to experience.

I watched this a few nights ago - and yeah, there's a kill scene in this that is something I've never seen in a horror flick before (and i've probably seen hundreds and hundreds of horror flicks).

I'm not going to give it away, but WOW.

As for the film, it was decent. It definitely had a bit of Friday the 13th part 2 vibe to it.

Was really different to have most of the film following the killer from behind.

But yeah, if you're looking to see gruesome killings like Terrifier (but without the laughs), this is the film for you!

It definitely has a stripped down, primitive Friday the 13th vibe, all slash no flash

I think thats why I appreciated it more as the genre seems to be churning out a lot of really good thriller/creepy/horror crossover in recent years and its nice to see some violence as the primary focus. Kind of like Rambo (2008)

Otter 10-25-2024 12:17 PM

Watched Terrifier 2 last night because I enjoyed the first one for the cheesy, campy, Halloween horror fun.

The 2nd one was absolutely terrible and it was 2 hours long. The best part of the movie was the scene they cut to after they start rolling credits so do yourself a favor and just jump to that one.

Spoiler!

2/10 - so bad

While I'm not sure it's technically a horror movie - Speak No Evil was incredible.

Watched "Late Night with The Devil" last night and wow, not sure exactly where to rank it but its right up there with The Exorcist, Shining, etc... a classic, truly original and mesmerizing

Those of you old enough to remember the 70s will absolutely love the look and feel, it takes you right back to that time with everything from color choices, graphics, cultural references... I absolutely cannot recommend it more highly

I read up on him after this movie, he has some nice credits to his work but this one stole the show... he is an actor to watch, he nailed that Johnny Carson rival with a shady past

Trap isn’t really horror, more thriller, but it was entertaining enough. Some of it didn’t really make sense but whatever. I’m easy to please.

Found a stream of a movie I hadn't previously heard of called The Substance. Demi Moore. Some cutie named Margaret Qualley. It was decent. Felt like a Dark Mirror episode. Tons of tits and ass. Demi is still pretty hot for however old she is. Lots of gore. The second half of the movie got a bit goofy. But it was entertaining.

A24 In Fabric...in the early 70s vibe of Rosemary's Baby...meets David Lynch.

The old Return of the Living dead or are they making a new one? The old one was great 80s cheesy type horror/comedy movies. Loved it.

Cause it was hilarious and fun.

If they match that same vibe, I’m 100% in

I'm assuming it's a new one - the big, oiled up zombie (from the drum) is carrying a Christmas tree through the cemetery. It's like a minute teaser trailer that's available now.

Oh, don't get me wrong - I definitely enjoyed the first.

The part when the black, oiled up zombie from the drum takes a big chunk out of that guy's head, or the part where the short haired babe dances naked on the grave (teenage me really enjoyed that scene) - I enjoyed it too.

I'm just not sure it needed to be remade.

I am pretty sure I gave it the old rub and tug to this at one point in my early years.

NSFW Nudity

Spoiler!

Smile 2 was OK. It wasn’t really scary at all and leaned more into body horror than anything, IMO.

I also thought the ‘twist’ was a bit unoriginal..
Spoiler!

THE SUBSTANCE

4.5/5 stars

Demi Moore is Elisabeth Sparkle, an aging celebrity fitness instructor who's being phased out of the business by a sleazy exec (Dennis Quaid). Desperate to reclaim her youth and cling to relevance, she resorts to some extreme measures that lead her down a dark and self-destructive path. Guys, the movie is NUTS! The final 30 minutes are simply insane! I loved it! Not surprised to see it at 90% on RT.

Just finished this one.

Whoever taught the directors anatomy class definitely took some psychedelics and that whole casino carpeting looking atmosphere reminded me of that scene in 'The Shining' where Danny was riding his tricycle in the hallway.

Yep. Very reminiscent of The Shining.

Also, Demi just won a Golden Globe for her performance. Good stuff.

Demi Moore got that old lady butt going on. Still would touch...

watched it last night. entertaining, though a bit predictable towards the back half of the film.

Reminded me of the 80's ReAnimator films (but on a much bigger budget).

Well done though. enjoyed.

Would have liked to seen:
