Advice on systems isn't really the roadblock here.

Understand. Deciding on the best upgrade path is usually the hardest part.

Personally I work with enterprise servers for a living. But can't tell you if any of my knowledge would be applicable.

On a side note you would be amazed by some of the old code that is still out there. Hell all Pizzs Hut base code is still from the 70s. 😆

Oh, the wayback machine. That thing is fun. I can still look up my old band's webpage on that.

And the CP threads on that link really take you back. Lot of good discussion. I wish some of those folks were still around.

I’m just glad there are soooo many IT folks on CP.

Seems to be really helping this specific situation a lot

Hey I love CP. Can't fault people for wanting to try to help out if they can.

Mmmk.

I developed a piece of software that uses Sqlite to sync data between multiple different parties for offline replication (this was over two years ago). I load tested this on older hardware knowing that my potential customers might be running on trash. I can tell you that 16 million records worked fine. Shit, you can add up to a billion rows in SQLite if you really know what you're doing...
MySql was a state of the art database with a good query analyzer\engine...Not being able to query or insert into a table that small leads me to believe you've got a problem that's deeper than just COTS. But you've got it all figured out and are king snake here so that's up to you to solve. But if I were in your position (which I don't envy) I wouldn't turn my nose up and act like a prick because somebody said something as simple as "are we solving a hardware problem with more software?".

I'm a software engineer, would absolutely be willing to help out or assist if anything is needed.

Why the sarcasm for people trying to help? :hmmm:

mr. tegu 01-10-2024 03:37 PM

I can call the number for one of those four month IT certification programs. Would that help?

I went to one of them and got a software engineer job right out of school and have been doing it for years now. Best decision I made was a 4 month IT boot camp.

Indian Chief 01-10-2024 03:45 PM

This wouldn't have been a problem if we nuked DC.

/ducks

That’s cool. I’ve always wondered how legitimate those are. I was just going to call them though I’m not tech savvy enough to do it. Hoping they could walk me through how to fix the issue since DaFace is looking for help and suggestions on this.

So at the end of the day, it sounds like the antiquated software is the major roadblock.

Maybe the best solution is to start a brand new ChiefsPlanet with new software, lock ALL old threads from any new postings and signups, keep the site up for viewing and ads to generate income with a link on the new site, make everyone signup on the new site with their old user names, and then there is NO migration.

All you need is a new server.

Seems much faster, no migration of all the old stuff except user data.

Am I missing something? :hmmm:

That's a great idea until a bunch of trolls sign up with other member's usernames for the lols. Because you KNOW that will happen.

Just to be clear, I'm just here to answer questions. I'm happy to provide a little insight into the issues, but there are no decisions that I'll be making. I'm happy to pontificate about my views on the best new software, but I have no desire to get into it any further than I already am. :)

The barrier here is largely just Kyle finding time to deal with it, not Kyle figuring out how to do things.

Never gonna happen, ever

Kyle would - especially in the offseason - lose so many clicks it would make his head spin... like it or not, DC drives a ton of traffic
