Last night was a truly amazing moment for me. Myself, my wife (of 15 years), my 14 yr old son, and my Three daughters (ages 10, 8, and 5) were all in our living room glued to the Royals game... All Cheering loudly. It was a sight to behold for me... First time I've had the whole family doing that. The excitement across the city is no freaking joke. There are so many people that have never had this feeling here before (for baseball). Take a second, lean back.... and enjoy this moment fellas. |

That lineup sure looks toothless without Ortiz in there. It seems worse against LH pitchers for sure. I'd be quite tempted to push Shields back an extra day to rest his arm a tad, not pitch in 88 degree humidity, face good LH hitters Boston has. And just let him get Miami on Monday night.

The RedSox Team OPS vs LHP is .715 as opposed to RHP which is .819. Try and neutralize Lefthanded batters Ellsbury, Carp, Ortiz, Holt, and Drew, as well as Switch Hitters Saltalphabet (.551 vs LHP / .864 vs RHP) and Nava (.608 vs LHP / .854 vs RHP). Even Napoli's and Gomes' splits are worse against LHP. Stack it up. |
Saltalphabet. ROFL

Jeez....
Royals Pitching this year has hit for an OPS of .571... which is better than our SS position which has hit for .561 on the year. Damn. |
The Royals are damned Hot having won 16 out of 20 since the All-Star Break. But it ain't the bats doing it.
Team OPS before break - .686 Team OPS after break - .698 While it's certainly better, not by much. Pitchers have really stepped it up. Here is the opposing teams OPS before and after opposing OPS before break - .725 opposing OPS after break - .624 Lots of props to Dave Eiland, Doug Henry and the pitching staff as a whole. |
Salvy should be back soon, right?

Yes, I believe he can come back Sunday if all checks out.

One more note. I may be wrong, but it appears that Bruce Chen's emergence in the rotation has had a major benefit for Ervin Santana. I believe Santana has followed Chen in the rotation since the ASB (4 starts).
In those 4 starts, Santana is 4-0 with an ERA of 1.27, 22K/7BB, and a WHIP of 0.882. I wonder if the change of speed coming off Chen is helping Santana. |
Oh yeah, and speaking of Santana...
Ervin Santana @ErvinSantana_54 19m Thou hast seen nothing yet. #MigueldeCervantes #SecondHalfIsOurs LMAO I love him. He called his shot at the ASB and is backing it the hell up. |

Especially the way Shields pitched in his last outing. I'm sure he's chomping at the bit to get back out there. |
Baseball vs football record wise. See what you think.
Most wins in a 162 game season... 116 Least wins in a 162 game season... 43 116 - 43 = 73 73 / 16 = 4.5 Baseball wins first = Football record 43 = 0 - 16 47.5 = 1 - 15 54 = 2 - 14 58.5 = 3 - 13 63 = 4 - 12 67.5 = 5 - 11 72 = 6 - 10 76.5 = 7 - 9 81 = 8 - 8 85.5 = 9 - 7 90 = 10 - 6 94.5 = 11 - 5 99 = 12 - 4 103.5 = 13 - 3 108 = 14 - 2 112.5 = 15 - 1 116 = 16 - 0 Seems pretty close in the fact that if the Royals win 90 games they will probably be right on the playoff boarder line... just as the Chiefs might be if we get to 10 - 6. Both records should get us in, but you never know for sure. |

Also Detroit picked up 25 games on us the past 8 years to pull within TWO games all time of us 295-293. (We are 5-3 vs them this year so far so we're up FOUR now but they look pretty decent lately so I'm sure we might have a tough matchup on our hands) Hope to exit the year with a winning mark vs Detroit. |

This just goes to show how good the Royals of the seventies and eighties really were. As bad as the teams of the past twenty years have been, it is still taking other franchises all of that time to try and catch up. |
Joel Goldberg @goldbergkc
Change on those calls in NY where scorer ruled errors on 2 balls lost in sun. Joe Torre reverses, Cain @ Gordon given hits |

Reading through the game thread, somebody mentioned that this season "was like the 70's" with the crowd and the atmosphere. It's close. And one of the reasons is the at bats they are getting now.
Seeing guys go down in the count and shortening the swing to go the other way has kept several innings alive since the ASB. Last night in the 6th was another great example. We had 4 AB's where, down 0-2 or 1-2 guys laced singles the other way to keep the inning alive. And the Sox had no answer. I've attended 22 games this season and last night might have made the last 30 years worth the wait. This team is white hot. Justin Maxwell looks like a stronger, non spectacled version of Al Cowens. Although I'm not sure I want to see him CF too much. That shot by Napoli with the bases juiced, probably would have been caught by Cain or Dyson. Max covers ground well, but CF out there is huge. One last thing: Shane Victorino must have attended church yesterday because it was a miracle that mofo caught that ball off Lough's bat. That happened right in front of me and when Lough hit it, and Victorino took one step in, I thought "We are tied". Then the ball started to sink and he recovered. He came back towards the bullpen and I got his attention and yelled at him: "that first step in is what gets a guy sent to Pawtucket". Bullpen dudes were chuckling. What a great night. |
There seems to be a winning attitude in the Royals clubhouse that I haven't seen in.....shit, I don't know. Its a damned shame that they shit the bed in May. Now they've got to win a boat load of games to make the post-season.
I think they proved yesterday, that they won't be intimidated by powerhouse teams. |
Was there last night. Electric crowd would describe it. And only getting better with more wins.
|
Fans love the Royals and want to see a winner....this is heaven for me. last time i had this much fun was 1994 during the winning streak and taking the lead for the wildcard.
****ing strike 2003 was fun but the royals were falling hard at this time |
This may have already been posted, but I went and looked up what Kyle Smith has done since the trade for Maxwell.
1 start. Went 2/3 of an inning. Gave up 4 hits, 3 walks, 4 ER. So he's sitting at a solid 54.00 ERA. Looks like he's set to throw again today. Meanwhile Maxwell is 8-17 with 3 bombs and 6 RBIs. I know, I know...sample size. But it still makes me happy. |
Just win, baby! Sorry guys.

I believe tonight's game is on MLB Network, for those of us out-of-towners who want to partake in the magic.
Just a few thoughts: 1. The move for Maxwell was just awesome. Where the hell was this guy? I mean, you look at his size and swing and he just looks like a slugger. Great pickup...I only hope we can keep playing him. 2. The bullpen continues to wow me. Bueno? Sure, why not. 3. Winning 3/4 is now very doable. I'm still gunning for the sweep, though. That would make a statement to everyone. Let's do this! |

Well, he's already blown that away. Dude has legit power. None of his homers so far have been cheapies. |
After watching the Wednesday game and last night...I might be a believer.
|
I just realized that I got married the day before the start of the 2nd half of the season, July 18th. The Royals are 17-4 since I got married. The baseball Gods are either praising me or setting me up for a severe letdown.
|
I'm so sick of Texas mopping up on Houston and Anaheim. It's really crappy Houston moved to the AL this year. I said back in March that it could seriously affect the Wild Card because it would give Oak-Ana-Tex so many cheap wins that others couldn't get. (I was wrong on Anaheim since they suck balls this year). It's kinda unfair frankly.
I suppose the White Sox are nearly as bad. |
So I hate to be Captain Bringdown (although the last time this team looked this good this late, I was 5 years old in '94), but should we be worried about the fact that this team has so many come from behind wins? I remember everyone saying last year that Baltimore (I think it was them, anyways) couldn't keep up their pace because of all their wins in 1-run games. Why wouldn't we be saying the same about come from behind wins? Hoping someone with more knowledge of baseball can give me a good explanation.

adding on tambaberry's post - our lineup seems to get hot around the third or fourth time through on the SP and just demolishes relievers. That is based on my personal observation anyway.

Wish I could be at the K tonight.
That being said I have the same type of excitement/ jitters I usually have before a big Chiefs game to just watch the Royals on TV tonight. This is great. |
