LMAO why the **** wouldn't you just deny it.

RustShack 07-28-2021 06:25 PM

It’s just wild ESPN thought they could move 3-5 schools to the AAC, without paying them equal to more than they would make through 2025 in the Big12.

You most certainly don't rob a conference 20 million a year and just expect to skate by. They're giving the mouse the "**** you" treatment. That mouse was in bed with OU, Texas and the SEC, and guess what? Everyone knows it.

Somehow, the Mouse dropped the ball by engaging in the conduct for the sole purpose of injuring the plaintiff. And apparently there's documented evidence of it.

Do you think that the AAC and ESPN or even UT and OU want to have a university president, AD, or a BOR member testifying on stand with their right hand raised and under oath, especially now?

I doubt that. They'll want to avoid that as much as possible now that this has spilled over.

They'll bank on the remains of the Big 12 imploding first and if it gets close to litigation time they'll just pony up the fees and be on their way is my guess.

There’s a ton on violations with Texas and OU alone, especially if they want to leave before 25. But purposely trying to get rid of a conference you have media contracts with for your own gain? Boy oh boy. That’s like getting caught burning down your own house to collect insurance… but on a much larger scale.

Look. As explained before, the Big 12 would not have rattled this chain unless they know there’s a pretty serious legal argument behind it. ESPN must be pretty complicit here and the Big 12 believe they have a smoking gun.

I can see why it would be a PR hit for ESPN, but why is it illegal. Schools can leave their conference, right? Hasn't it happened before?

The accusation is that they (ESPN) tried to get UT and OU them to leave earlier. This is what they're claiming to have evidence of that, that UT and OU didn't have to pay big buyouts and ESPN didn't have to pay the rest of the billion dollars remaining on the TV contract with the Big 12 because the Big 12 would have imploded.

Just doesn't seem like the Big 12 has some smoking gun of evidence if their main threat revolves around the other side not wanting to take the stand.

Rattling the chain is legitimately all they have left. Why not try and scare UT and OU into either honoring their remaining years or the buyout without much of a fuss?

Sassy Squatch 07-28-2021 06:50 PM

If ESPN really was sloppy enough to leave evidence that they're complicit in this then by all means bend them over and ram it in without lube. It'll be nice to see a corporation of that size actually get smacked the **** around for once because of these bullshit antics.

It’s a wild guess on my part but, if it’s not just slapping at the water trying to not drown their confidence to me indicates that the smoking gun could be coming from one or more of the schools that was approached bringing forth communications about the proposal[s].

Schools who left before weren’t locked into a GOR with four years left. In the Big12 you have to give 12 hour notice of talking to another conference, Texas and Oklahoma are rumored to have been doing it for 6-9 months. ESPN who has contracts with with Big12, trying to end the Big12 for their own gain isn’t exactly legal.

Sassy Squatch 07-28-2021 06:56 PM

https://www.cbssports.com/college-fo...om-conference/

"I have every expectation that Oklahoma and Texas will do whatever they can to not meet their [contractual] obligations. That's what they've done so far. ... One of the ways the two schools and ESPN will seek to absolve themselves of the obligation is to destabilize the league and cause an implosion of the other eight members.

"I am absolutely certain ESPN employees have discussed and provided incentives for at least one conference to raid 3-5 members from the Big 12. In doing so, they are prepared to reward them with future television proceeds. If the conference goes away as an entity, Oklahoma and Texas could be relieved from their exit obligations. Those obligations at this time would include the payment of $70M to $80M -- two years full revenue -- per school and leaving their media rights with the Big 12.

"We're just not going to sit still and let somebody who is supposed to be our partner collaborate and disrupt our business. I know with certainty they are doing it relative to one conference. I suspect they have done the same thing in moving Texas and Oklahoma to the SEC."

I don’t think Bowlsby phrases it as strongly as he did today without something to back it up. But it’s just window dressing for the settlement agreement

This may very well end up being FOX vs Disney for the control of college football into the future.

We’ll see. Disney is one of the most powerful corporations in the world. They own roughly 40% of ALL cinema and staff the best attorneys on the planet. They got caught literally plagiarizing illustrations (like, dead to rights) for Lion King and never paid a red cent for it. They have singlehandedly kept Mickey from going into the public domain for decades because every time he’s due (will be due again in 2025) legislators pass a law extended ALL of corporations their rights to keep their content out of the public domain. Did Disney get caught with their pants down? Looks like it. Will they pay for it? If they do, it’ll be the first time.

Jerm 07-28-2021 08:34 PM

There’s no way in hell OU and Texas are staying until 2025…come on lol.

You’d think these other schools would start being more proactive about securing a place elsewhere (and I’m sure some are) instead of clinging on to the 2 schools that don’t want to be there….

FloridaMan88 07-28-2021 08:38 PM

ESPN and other media companies could be allies for the remaining Big 12 teams to help show their potential value addition in terms of media rights with the other power conferences.

That seems to be in the better long term interest for the remaining schools than joining Bowlsby’s pissing match with ESPN that ultimately is not going to save the Big 12.

Even Bowlsby knows that. He's trying to ensure that UT and OU pay the exit fees, and possibly a hell of a lot more money from ESPN if he has legitimate proof of what he alleged.

The worst acceptable outcome if KU doesn't get into the B1G, and then the ACC is going basketball only to the Big East. Then football goes to MTN West or AAC. That would still be a big blow, but it maintains the prestigiousness of the basketball program.

I would imagine that is the worst case scenario.

I'm not sure how smart that is of the Big 12. They are absolutely correct, but if you get on ESPN shitlist and they won't broadcast you if the league is saved, what does that get you? You are biting the hand that feeds so to speak.

What effect would a significant conference downgrade for KU Football have on KU Basketball, in terms of revenue?

My understanding is that KU Football is the primary revenue driver at KU, despite their futility.

Kiimo 07-29-2021 11:56 AM

Posting this again because as it stands now KU Football is at an all-time low and there's really nowhere to go but up. This is why KU is attractive to conferences, they make money even with football sucking and if that stops happening, even a little bit, this revenue spikes.

KU basketball could probably hold itself up on it's own, it's such a great program, but you're right there's just more to it than that. Football is the big money sport everywhere. I'm sure a lot of their fans would be happy just making sure basketball is propped up but the athletic dept. and the university are going to run it like a business, and it's going to be a hard sell gutting your primary revenue driver. It could cost jobs and create some questions about how you fund the other sports.

Sassy Squatch 07-29-2021 12:19 PM

Imagine the Big 12 successfully forces UT and OU to stay through to 2025 and Texas actually passes that legislation that any school must get permission to move athletic conferences in the meantime.

That's impressive for KU considering Big 10 schools get more media rights fees to enhance their revenue than KU does from the Big 12.

Interesting that the previous graphic above left out Texas at the top and ALL the SEC programs. Correction: It left out everyone EXCEPT the Big 12 and Big 10. Seems a bit . . . . . . disingenuous?

Probably just an oversight. I'm sure that was accidental.

Edit: Sorry, I know that's not an easy list to read, but was having trouble copying the graphic from my phone. But if you click on the link above, much easier to read and you can see how all the SEC teams plus Texas and Oklahoma were omitted. As well as every other conference, minus the Big 12 and Big 10.

My understanding is that KU Football is the primary revenue driver at KU, despite their futility.

Revenue, yes, profit no. KU football is not very profitable. KU basketball is very, very profitable.

Did you know this list was only including Big 10 and Big 12 teams when you posted it?

Just curious.

Most of the big revenue schools are not very 'profitable' if you look at the difference between their revenues and expenses. A lot barely even break even.

Expect Texas A&M, which is just killing it since they moved to the SEC. Crazy difference between their total revenues and their expenses. Most profitable program in college sports currently.

That’s now how big biz works, friend.

People kiss and make up all the time if there’s $$$ to be made.

Adidas got us into serious trouble. Then apologized, paid restitution, and re-upped our apparel deal. See? Friends once more!

Over a course of one season at big schools like Texas and A&M I imagine some temporary expenses and AD infrastructure costs can add up, but over a rolling 5 or 10 year period it starts to even out and I would imagine those schools would be profitable as well.

I think Adidas moreso had dirt on us...and would expose us instead of protect us had we not reupped.

If that were true, they wouldn’t have significantly increased the deal.

You'd think they'd have a significantly harder time getting other schools to work with them if it was known they pulled some bullshit like that.

Forget FB. All of KU’s brand value is locked in their hoops program. That’s what other conf will grab us for - if they decide to.

The free market told us this. Kansas has the 4th highest apparel contract per Forbes:

1. UCLA
2. Louisville
3. Tejas
4. Rock Chalk
5. Michigan

ESPN is bi-winning.

They win with the TV contracts. They also win by driving up discussion with the whole "tampering" thing.

Gabe DeArmond’s of PowerMizzou latest thoughts.

Quote:

The more I think Texas and OU to the SEC is the first step. I think we're going to see alliances and a separation of the major conferences from everyone else. Was talking to a colleague tonight who has heard some similar things about the possibilities. Think about this:

Maybe you have the equivalent of two 32-team leagues. In each "league" you have two "divisions" (the SEC is one division, they join up with another league, say the ACC, that's the other division. Then you have the PAC12/Big 10 as the two divisions in the other league). In each division, you have four four team pods. You play the three teams in your pod, you play 4-5 games against other teams in your division (SEC games) then you play 3-4 against the other division.

Every game is a Power Five game. Ticket sales are through the roof because there are no games you don't care about. Think about this schedule:

Oklahoma (in your pod)
Arkansas (in your pod)
Texas (in your pod)
Ole Miss (conference game)
Florida (conference game)
Kentucky (conference game)
Auburn (conference game)
South Carolina (conference game)
Georgia Tech (crossover game)
Miami (crossover game)
Virginia (crossover game)
NC State (crossover game)

At the end of the 12-game season, each pod has a champion.

Pod 1 vs Pod 2
Pod 3 vs Pod 4

Winners play for the conference title. Winner of that game plays the winner of the other league. Totals 15 games. Then, just maybe, if you have the other 32 team league, the winner of this league plays the winner of that league in the college football championship game.

It adds exactly one game to the schedule for two teams. Nobody plays more than 16 (you could even go to an 11 game regular season if you want to). EVERY SINGLE GAME is must see. I mean, is there a single game on that schedule you wouldn't want to go to? You're only going to have 16 games every week (32 teams) so they're all televised somewhere.

Basically, it's a mini-NFL model. Some would hate it and say that's not college football. But the more I think about it, the more fun it sounds.

And, sure, this is all hypothetical. I don't know if any of this will happen. But I don't think Texas and OU joining the SEC is the end of this.

Not at all.

How long before the rest abandon ship? West Virginia seems like a fit for the ACC. The B12’s only hope to survive would be to try to get the top non power five teams like BYU, Boise St, UCF, Cincinnati, etc to join. But they may not want to. I think the acc, big 10, and pac 12 scavenge the remaining schools

I wonder if the idiots still think this was some kind of negotiating tactic for the big 12 network or whatever. Of course, those people also probably thought SEC schools would vote against the invitations.
