Dude sucks. His BA is only .174, and he has only 12 RBIs.

The good news though, Cleveland and New York both lost. Just waiting on Texas.

All game are done for today. Here are the standings.

Not to be pessimistic, but does anyone realistically see us passing three teams to snag the 2nd wild card spot? Not me.

These next 5 games won't win us a playoff spot, but they sure can end our season. We must win tonight and at least split with Boston. If we win one or two games in the next five that would probably be too much to overcome.

I am honestly not that worried about Cleveland and Baltimore. We get to play Cleveland and other than the Twinkies they have a pretty tough August. I tend to view Baltimore the same way. They have a tough August and have only been playing one game above .500 since the All-Star break.
Texas is who I am worried about. They could easily only lose 5 games the rest of the month. They have 7 with the Astros. 6 with the Mariners. 2 with the Brewers and Twinkies and 3 with the White Sox. Now if somehow Tampa can find a way to lose and come back to the pack in the wildcard race and both spots open up, that would be a huge lifeline. I think that if we continue to play good and don't screw up this week, that we will be past Cleveland and Baltimore by the end of this month. Then after that, we would just have one more team to track down for that last wildcard spot. |
Worried that the Boston series is going to end our hopes. Boston is a legitimate playoff team, and this series can prove whether we belong. Need to start another 9 out of 10 stretch tonight.

You win some and lose some you shouldn't along the way. That's baseball. Alot of games yet to be played. By the end of the month we will probably know our fate. |

Let's just hope he gets it corrected and his pitching starts trending towards his April/May figures |
By the way, Santana is our ace. Not Shields.
No doubt in my mind that if we need a stop or somehow reach the wildcard 1-game playoff, I want Magic on the mound, not "Big Game" James |
I thought his arm looked a bit tired in the Cleve start right before the end of the year, really laboring with high pitch counts. Then he was sharp again first start after the break vs. White Sox, but back to laboring in 2 vs Minny. Looks tired to me, cannot locate and getting no break on his changeup. Velocity is 90 on those fastballs too, not the 93ish he was working earlier.

He also talked about how at the beginning of the season you can pick up a whole gallon of milk, at the all-star break you can only pick up a half gallon, and by the end of the season you can only pick up a pint. Crazy what pitchers put their arm through. |

Shields effort was garbage last night. Throwing 3-0 fastballs at 90mph right down the plate. I know our offense (whole different issue) can't seem to hit those pitches, but about 25 other mlb offenses can. And the Twins did, with ease. |
Quote:
Look at Roy Halladay to see what happens after too much usage. Kaput! |
I would not be against the idea of sitting Shields his next start to let his arm rest a bit.
|
Quote:
Halladay had six straight years of 220+ innings before his body broke down. That's a really bad example. |

Shields has averaged 221.3 IP/yr the past 6 years. Therefore, I have no earthly idea what you're possibly disagreeing with here. |

Joel, please get rid of dipshit in the booth. Hud is beyond horrible to listen to... even my 5, 8, and 10 yr old girls make fun of him....

Has anyone heard who goes down to make room for Duffy?

I couldn't stand him either at first but he grows on you to the point to where you look forward to some of the crazy stuff that comes out of his mouth. |
Sorry, didn't see your reply seaofred.

I also thought Frank White was boring. |
Count me in as one who doesn't mind Hud. He can get a little annoying from time-to-time, but he plays the "dumb jock" behind the mic role well.
|
Hudler is pretty good at get people talking. Frank White suuuucked.
|
I used to hate Hud... but now, I've grown accustomed to hearing his stupid schtick and having Ryan letting him hang himself. It's pretty hilarious.

2) He went over 220 two times in that span. 3) Halladay averaged 237 innings per year |
Not really Royals-related, but we had talked about Chase Utley before the deadline. Utley and the Phils reach agreement on 2-year extension worth somewhere between 25-30 million, per Ken Rosenthal.

I don't mind Hud. I think most other teams announcers are pretty shitty to be honest. Him and Ryan make a pretty good and interesting team.

Sox win!!!!
**** you Yankees!!! |
Having a hard time catching up with the Tigers and the Rangers, but progress is still being made. In the last ten games, the Royals have gained on these teams:
Yankees - 5 games A's - 4 games Orioles - 3 games Rays - 3 games Indians - 2 games |

Also, since I think we're really chasing Oakland and not Texas (Texas is probably going to overtake them), consider that in that same 10 game stretch we've gained 4 games on the A's. |
Oops! Sorry, I didn't see that you already had the A's in there. Total fail.

Texas may be the team that screws us (assuming it isn't Cleveland). Their schedule until the end is really favorable.

Was at the game last night. Sat behind the home plate area. Duffy's speed was AMAZING. His control was way off but his pitches were humming. Headed back to the K for Saturday and Sunday's games. ****ing amped to watch us play the BoSox.
|
Time to prove we belong with the big boys. Bring on the BoSox!

A split with the BoSox won't work. 3 out of 4 minimum. We are at home. Time to make hay.

If we want to be a playoff team, we're going to have to beat the best. Early in this season seems like a long time ago, but we went into Boston and won 2/3, so no reason we can't win 3/4 at the K. Let's do this, boys and girls.
|
So, depending upon when Davis comes back from bereavement leave, is he inserted back in the rotation for Monday's opener vs the Marlins? My guess is yes, although I'd LOVE to see Duffy back in his spot, Davis to the Pen, and Mendy to Omaha. I'd also love to see Will Smith back as well, but who would he replace?
|
I actually like our pitching matchups against Boston tonight and Friday.
Tonight: Chen is really mixing his pitches well and keeping hitters off balance. Lester, who we have traditionally struggled against, is a shell of his former self and is really having a rough year. Hopefully it continues tonight . . . . Friday: Peavy . . . meh. We've knocked him around before with the 'other' Sox. We know what he's got. And Santana . . . . need I say more? Saturday & Sunday: I don't like these matchups near as well, but I do like the fact that we've got Shields (yes, I realize he sh*t the bed against Minny Tues.) going in the last game, a former AL East guy who knows what it's like to pitch in these big games against top notch AL East opponents. Hopefully "Big Game" James lives up to his name come Sunday. We'll see . . . . . |
So, I was at the game last night. Split time between Gordo Nation and the Diamond Club thanks to my Brookside Godfather (who's a great, great guy and got us in without tickets because the door guy loves him).
I didn't get to see Duffy from back there, but his performance was about what I expected from him. His stuff was excellent. He really does have TOR-quality stuff, if he can improve his control and command. LHP who can pump 95-96 can succeed in the majors for a long time if they have good control and can throw quality strikes with the fastball for strike 1. We were starting to see that before the Tommy John last year. Loved making Deduno lose his mind in the dugout. Like many Twins pitchers, he needs to realize he isn't very good and deal with it. |
Why are the Sox having such a strong season? I know losing Valentine was important .
|
May we not shit the bed this series :grovel:
