I wish I had just 1/10th of their stupidity... The amount of money these guys make for putting their bodies on the line is as easy to wrap my little brain around as the idea of traveling to the nearest star (other than the sun).

Its just the was the NFL system works. Bosa ia holding out too. It use to be just RB's holding out. Now its DL. expect more position next year.

Marcellus 08-07-2023 07:39 AM

Jones will have to play this season, he really has no other option so this is really a problem for next year. Relax we will have him back before the season starts.

I guess my main concern is him saying his back is hurt or something like that. I mean sure it would NOT help his market for next year, but still have a small fear of that.

JohnnyHammersticks 08-07-2023 07:58 AM

He'll turn 30 next offseason. If he doesn't play and play very well this season he won't be offered anything close to what we're likely offering him right now. He'll be looking at offers around $25M/yr.

The Chiefs have most of the leverage here. The Tyreek situation has shown that they won't be forced into making deals they don't want to make.

I think deep down he loves the Chiefs and he loves his teammates. When it's time to go he'll go. He's been through many training camps already - he knows what it takes to be ready for the season. He's just trying to get his cash. When that is decided (in whatever way, positive or negative) I'm confident he'll still give 100%

I'm confident he'll give 100% too, but training camp is important in certain aspects to get guys back into football shape.

Red Dawg 08-07-2023 08:21 AM

Deserves talk is pointless. We know he deserves it but we can't pay it and keep others we want to keep.

Not really. The unforgivable daily $50K fines generally mean that somebody who is under contract will now hold "in". Jones is going to have $1M+ in fines whether an extension is reached or not. Could have the same extension without losing all that money if he was holding in. And he doesn't have a ton of leverage since he'd be forfeiting $23M to sit out the season. I don't understand what he or Bosa are doing, but the days of "hold out, and fines will all be forgiven in the end" are over.

I’m not a fan of letting a pass rusher walk so we can sign an off ball lber and a slot cb

Is not paying him $30MM AV considering “letting him walk”?

Red Dawg 08-07-2023 08:59 AM

No idea if he will play or not. He probably does since 20 mil is on the line but this isn't getting done. He's as good as gone before the trade deadline.

If they wanted to keep Sneed they would have signed him this off-season.

They're definitely paying Bolton and Creed though.

We have spent way too much draft capital on DB's to pay Sneed what he can get on the open market.

Well Bolton highly depends. If the agent comes asking for Roquan money, see ya.

Creed seems like the lock of all locks, though.

wazu 08-07-2023 10:00 AM

I wonder what the market is for Sneed. Obviously we know how awesome he is, but I never see him mentioned among the league's best by national pundits and such. Might not be a crazy high price to keep him. Then again, we're actually so good at bringing in guys on rookie contracts it may just be completely unnecessary.

FloridaMan88 08-07-2023 10:01 AM

Creed is better than both of those guys, but the Chiefs have obviously shown they can draft/develop quality centers.

You’re talking about old regimes. Veach hasn’t done that yet.

LOVE IT! Kelce and I'm sure Mahomes should be telling Jones that if you sign a team friendly deal we will hook you up with some advertising off field money to make up for the contract discount!

ETA on Mahomes+Jones in a State Farm commercial?

I was planning on making a post about the options that we could look to trade Jones for around the league. Likely options of a younger DT that’s flashed but hasn’t done so consistently that a team would be willing to part with along with a premium pick to get CJ95. Someone going to the last year of his rookie deal wanting to earn a big second contract.

I came up pretty empty. Next years DT class is almost completely devoid of potential game changing talent. All of the DTs that have any value got paid. The Chiefs DT room is bottom 10 -at best- without CJ …and quite possibly in the conversation for league worst.

If I’m CJs agent, I’m saying “there are 2 ways my client shows up before a few days before game 1…

A guarantee not to use the franchise tag on him next year (I believe this was used by Silverback a couple years ago)

Or

Meet our contract demands, which we think are fair.

Hill put them in a no-win situation. So far, Jones has not done that.

warpaint* 08-08-2023 02:34 AM

The difference with Hill is that they rightly figured they could have success with a different makeup and Kelce has always been the chains mover.

Jones is the 2nd most important player on the team and the defense struggles when he is not on the field. That said he is pricing himself out of town possibly. If so it would be ideal if they could trade him now as the contract extension that’s possibly coming anyway will probably not age well but there is no way to replicate his production this coming season….tag and trade next offseason is not a bad idea. He’s not sitting out the season, too much $ to leave on the table. Agreeing not to tag isn’t happening.

Regardless I don’t blame them for paying him if that’s how it goes.

GloryDayz 08-08-2023 04:09 AM

I wonder how much stressing Jones is doing each day? The fine my not be too much to him, but I wonder if the team is letting his mind wonder?

Unless there’s some miracle cap solution of which I’m unaware, $500K in cap space going into a season is untenable. Can’t pick up any vets in case of injury.

Jones seems to be treating an outlier contact (Donald) like the baseline. Like with Watson’s fully guaranteed deal, it’s not a precedent.

Stand-off seems pretty tense. Solid 40% CJ is traded.

Link? I don’t remember much being said about Hill before he was traded.

FringeNC 08-08-2023 06:28 AM

How much in a trade could we get for Chris Jones? It is really not a very smart strategy to give up a bunch of draft picks AND have to make the guy the highest paid at the position. Miami did that for Hill -- maybe a team would do that for Jones, too.

Chris Jones is close to getting shipped out of town. He may make a few more million but then it is going to dawn on him that it's not going to change his lifestyle at all, and he's not having nearly as much fun because he won't be competing for championships every single year.

How do you know ow he is about to get shipped out of town? Are you in on the meetings with Varth and Andy Ried and Clark Hunt? Chiefs are set to runic back to the Super Bowl but really need Jones on the field.

Chiefs are set to run it back to the Super Bowl but really need Jones on the field.

Not to mention the scenarios couldn't be more different. Jones wont bring even a 1st round pick. Hill was a transcendent skill position player who was still very young.

Jones will be 30 soon and this will be his 2nd big contract so teams aren't unloading a ton of draft capital and the $$ to get Jones.

"A few more million".

A few more million over a couple years adds up guys.

Yes, clearly Veach is opposed to that.....

Maybe we should ask the highest paid LG and RT in football?

Meet our contract demands, which we think are fair.

I think this freight train is heading right into this. But, in no way does Veach allow this to happen if it gets that far.

The Chiefs still have him controlled for 2 more years. Veach is not agreeing to give a good first round pick. Chris will be sitting out all year if the Chiefs only get this this year and that's it. It will end badly for him and the Chiefs.

I've been calling for a trade with the Bears, swap 1's and also get a 2 and 4 in 2025. We get a top 10 pick, Bears have tons of cap room. Jones is out of the conference. Just do it ,lets move on.

Jones and 2 years of control is worth way more than a middle round 1st and a 2/4. Plus we lose our 1st? You must think he sucks badly.

O.city 08-08-2023 07:59 AM

I love Bolton as much as the next guy, but a LB who has to come off the field in pass situations may not be a high priority?

Someone should tell Veach to just accept the imaginary trade that some guy on a message board who fondles swine for a living has proposed and just move on.

O.city 08-08-2023 08:15 AM

It's gonna be pretty difficult to win the AFC in it's current state this season with the DL you'd have left after you trade Jones and can't add anything back worth much.

Trade him next year if you wanna trade him, but you'd have to tag and trade and that's a 33.5 million dollar hit on your cap during FA. So this is why Jones has a fair amount of leverage here. The Chiefs need him to win a SB this year and cant' really tag him next year with that hit.

100% agree. And every day he holds out, he's cutting into whatever raise he might get moving to a new team.

Oh yes the old player hating on Mahomes we've seen this song and dance before obviously Mahomes saw the show. He will revisit this after we win our Super Bowl this season.

GloryDayz 08-08-2023 08:30 AM

At this point I think the Chiefs should entertain a new contract that, in full, would net a sum he'd like, but it would be laden with performance requirements to achieve the difference between what he's getting now and the addition. It's important that the Chief demand "#1 or #2" performance for "#1 or #2" pay. Ans perhaps that's the current sticking point in whatever communications they might be having with him, but the team needs to make sure they for performance into any new deal they have with him.

Two things.

1: Of all the Jalen Hurts pep talks to his team, how ironic is it that the chose him preaching ball security? Superbowl fumble 6.

2: Chris is entitled to his opinion, but I think a QB leading his team to a Superbowl victory/Mvp on one leg is far more impressive than the guy who fumbled the ball for a touchdown completely unforced in a game lost by 3 points.

Well......except for that fumble that was returned for a TD. Right?

Marcellus 08-08-2023 09:23 AM

I mean he has an argument. Mahomes was the most efficient mistake free QB to play a SB game probably, maybe next to Steve Young anyway but Hurts aside from the fumble was incredible. And the comment was made when asked about Hurts during the Top 100 players segment so.....I wouldn't get too worried about it.

Quote:

Hurts finished 27-of-38 for 304 yards and one touchdown through the air and ran for 70 yards and three scores. His rushing output was the highest ever for a quarterback in the Super Bowl.
4 total TDs over 300 yards passing, good completion %, record rushing yards and 3 scores on the ground? Yea pretty incredible. Luckily we have the best finisher in the game on our side.

Not trying to bring them up but damn man. I don't see how the Eagle don't go back to the SB unles they just crater due to injuries. The MFC is so damn weak.

The 49ers are up there with them in talent but I don't think Brock Purdy is winning that game

The Eagles overachieved. Time will prove it.

AdolfOliverBush 08-08-2023 09:45 AM

Hurts' SB stats are great on paper, but I don't see an all-time great SB performance when I watch that game. He completed an unusually high number of 50/50 jump balls ala Deshaun Watson in Houston, and did a great job of being pushed in the back by his teammates in short yardage situations.

O.city 08-08-2023 09:47 AM

The Eagles had an easy schedule, but they're really talented and the NFC is the Cowboys, the 9ers and a barrel of meh.

He may have.

He's refusing to play for another team, not showing up to camp, wants more money than the team is willing to pay, and the team's starting three-tech right now is Daniel Wise.

Tell me where the win in this situation is.

I suppose he's never been convicted of strangling a pregnant woman. So he has that going for him.

Watch out for the Seahawks. They have done a very good job of bolstering that roster the last 2 offseasons.

Feels like Geno Smith could be even better this year with more weapons at his disposal and the defense is even better.

I do kinda like the Seahawks as a sleeper. I think they've built a real nice situation but we will see with Geno.
