Why did they just up and give him all that money? We did that for matt before he played a snap and it was a terrible decision. He proved nothing and they paid him like he had some great season there and now they are stuck with him. Glad they did it but that was a stupid decision they can't get out of now. Same with Dallas and Dak. They are stuck with him and he's a loser.

The biggest feather in Denver's cap in that whole exchange was that they had so much flexibility in Russ's contract because the structure of it gave him a lower base salary and the signing bonuses hit Seattle's cap. They had an opportunity to use that flexibility to their advantage.

Instead they just set it all on fire and doubled down on a mediocre QB.

Just ****ed this thing up coming and going. And if my memory on the extension is correct, it came during camp - right? They'd seen him play. They had to realize something was amiss.

Just remarkably awful.

Rumor was embaRuss wasn’t going to play a snap until he signed his new contract. That’s why he didn’t play in PS.

Rodgers and Wilson aren't on the same plane right now. Rodgers may not be able to make his team orders of magnitude better than it is (though that's arguable) - but he damn sure doesn't make it substantially worse.

Right now that's exactly what Russell Wilson is doing. Any problem Denver has is being magnified by the disaster they have under center.

Agreed, but has there ever been a case of an elite QB (Russell Wilson could very well be the highest rates QB of all-time that has 10+ years in the league) that goes to a new team and shits the bed like this? It's stunning. Props to Pete Carroll and that staff for getting as much out of Wilson as they did.

Denver's defense is hard to measure. The Colts and 49ers have serious offensive limitations. The Raiders offense looked fine against Denver.

It's still early enough in the season. I hope Wilson continues to suck but maybe it's just growing pains and/or he's still bitter about how it ended in Seattle. Think Bret Hart when he first joined WCW.

Pete Carrol looks like a genius, throw in what he's done with Geno Smith.

So when is the earliest the Donks can get out of this glorious contract of theirs? Surely they can't cut him after this season, right? They're stuck with him for at least... 4? 5 seasons?

Eeeeexcellent.

As some pointed out in this thread (some more strongly than me, even) - the wheels have been wobbling on ol' AlbatRuss for some time now.

That 2nd half when he was said to be healthy and Pete was 'letting Russ cook' was ugly. The guy was directly responsible for 2-3 losses in there. He was on the decline already - some folks just didn't want to admit it and tended to put the blame at Carroll's feet.

I don't think he's THIS bad (because Matt Cassel wasn't THIS bad), but he's clearly not close to his peak.

After the 2025 season. And even that's gonna hurt; they can take a $31 million dead cap hit after the 2025 season or they can spread it out to $18 million in 2026 and $13 million in 2027.

It's an UGLY deal. Guaranteeing those option bonuses and the 2024 salary really rat-****ed them. Had they not done that, perhaps they could've gotten out after 2024. But with an extra $16 million in option guarantees for 2025 and 2026, they're pretty much hosed.

They're married to this guy for 4 years and then even the divorce prior to year 5 is going to cost them a fair amount...

Now we just need the Chargers to pay Herbert. Not that he won't be worth it, but it will certainly help us continue to dominate the AFCW.

Pretty amazing to be #39 after only 4.25 years as a starter. He's on a pace similar to Rodgers or Brady or Manning in terms of his "per year" points in the list. He's not far off from Matt Stafford's career total, despite Stafford having 8 extra years of yardage/TD numbers thrown into the formula.

I love the PFR HOF metric.

They are ahead of Montana because of the objective data. It is not a subjective list.

The extension was always baffling, given they would have had plenty of time to watch him and evaluate his play. Instead, they RUSHED to extend him.

Hell, Seattle knew very well that he was declining and has been doing their best to cover for that fact the past season plus.

I mean there is a pretty huge difference in how the game is played the last 20 years compared to the days of Montana. Joe lasted 12 years while getting the crap knocked out of him. How long would Manning have made it? He had a pretty serious neck problem that would have ended his career if he played in an earlier time period, yet he was able to keep going another 4 years in a pass happy era with very soft rules to protect him.

Scrambling to extend plays has been a huge part of Russell’s game for many years. He seems less quick than a few years ago, which is troublesome for Denver if they expect him to live up to that nearly $50M salary.

He has a ok arm when he can wind up, but its a slow release. He also can throw with a quick release but those seem to be on short throws. At least thats what I see when we've played them.

Broncos QB Russell Wilson underwent procedure on throwing shoulder following loss to Colts

Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson underwent a procedure on Friday in hopes of relieving discomfort near his throwing shoulder -- an injury similar to the one that sidelined Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott for most of training camp last year, per sources.

While teammates gathered Friday morning at the team facility in the aftermath of Thursday night's ugly 12-9 loss to the Colts, Wilson was on a plane to Los Angeles, where doctors performed a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection.

Sources say Wilson has been dealing with a strained latissimus dorsi -- an injury more commonly seen in baseball players, and one that is not usually treated with an injection. He popped up on the injury report with a right shoulder injury on Tuesday, and coach Nathaniel Hackett said Wilson was sore after he "dinged up" the shoulder in last Sunday's loss to the Raiders.

Wilson's hope, sources say, is that the injection -- coupled with round-the-clock treatment from his personal medical team -- will expedite the healing process. It's unclear, based on precedent and discussions with experts, whether the injection will improve his situation.

This is going to go down as one of the best trades in Chiefs history.

Meanwhile in Denver...

Do you not pay any attention to the stupid shit going around on the internet? This year instead of eating tide pods it is cooking chicken in NyQuil.

Tantamount.

Outside of him being injured I don’t see any way they bench him. After what they gave up in picks and his contract they will do anything to justify it even if that means firing the HC first.

Yep, they're stuck with WalRuss for the next 4 years with no viable way out. Ain't it great?
:)

The shoulder "injury" is just the snowball at the top of the hill. It will morph into a persistent excuse/not excuse/ but really is the excuse for poor performance.

If the Broncos designate Russell Wilson as a June 1st cut they can get rid of him after 2 more seasons in March of 2025.

That’s their best case scenario. BUT they would still have $49.6 million in dead money to shell out through 2028. They’ll try to pay it all up front to have one horribly bad season of no cap space which is even more hillarious.

I love George Paton
