Josh Allen is willing to try to turn the Browns around. It’s a big job. Thankfully he has the hand size to handle it.

That’s right, ladies and gentlemen, it’s that time of year, when we determine whether quarterbacks are able to play in the NFL by the span from their thumb to their pinkie finger.

According to Josh Norris of NBC Sports, Wyoming’s Josh Allen came in at a healthy 10-1/8 inches. That’s the biggest of this year’s crop of Senior Bowl quarterbacks. Rob Rang of NFLDraftScout.com has all the measurements, and the guy everyone will be asking about later is Oklahoma State’s Mason Rudolph, who isn’t playing in the Senior Bowl and not just because he has 9-1/8-inch hands. (He actually has a foot injury, no word on his shoe size.)

Hand size is an actual quantifiable thing, and it has an actual football application. The bigger your hands are, the easier it is to grip the ball (especially in bad conditions) and throw it accurately and well.

But it also takes on a life of its own this time of year, when NFL scouts log every bit of information possible and the internet dissects it to a ridiculous degree.

The Rams moved up and drafted Jared Goff even though he had little bitty hands. Some guys with tiny hands even go to get them stretched, so they don’t feel inadequate when they get to the Scouting Combine.

Is it ridiculous? Sometimes. But that’s never stopped scouts, or us, from talking about it.

Quarterbacks
-Baker Mayfield made some nice throws today but didn’t look completely comfortable from under center. He had trouble with his three-step drop and wouldn’t completely finish before releasing the ball in one on ones. He muscled a few throws but displayed accuracy and zip on a majority of his throws. It’s only the first day but his comfort in three and five-step drops needs to continue to be monitored the rest of the week.

-With plenty of buzz around the other signal-callers, the biggest name in Mobile struggled out of the gate. Josh Allen continued to display trouble consistently hitting his target and had some bad misses on layups throws in one on ones. While he continues to display tremendous arm strength, he missed too many easy throws, both vs. pressure and without pressure, on Day 1 and will need to have a strong showing the rest of the week if he wants to solidify himself as a top 10 pick.

-Virginia quarterback Kurt Benkert had a nice day. He was showing plenty of spin and accuracy on short-intermediate throws. He displayed many of the traits that made him successful during his senior year at Virginia and a strong first day has created buzz throughout Mobile.

-Troy quarterback Brandon Silvers showed off his strong arm today. He was accurate at all levels of the field and threw a beautiful 30-yard throw to the end zone that receiver Marcel Ateman was unable to haul in. He delivers a pretty clean ball and tight spiral and had a solid overall day.

-Western Kentucky quarterback Mike White really struggled in the first practice. He wasn’t showing the same velocity and spin he has throughout the season. He really struggled with his accuracy on easy throws underneath and also had two fumbled snaps. It was a tough overall day for him but, given what he displayed on film this season, there is still hope that he comes out and has a strong showing in tomorrow’s practice.

-One of the biggest concerns about Washington State’s Luke Falk coming into the week was about leaving his college system that often aids quarterback decision making. In practice, Falk looked hesitant more often than his peers, working to place passes too often, which led to erratically missed throws on Day 1. Still, his quick feet are evident in practice reps, and trait/mental make-up wise, there’s a lot to like

-The quickest release of the quarterbacks is clearly Richmond’s Kyle Lauletta, who’s compares to Jimmy Garoppolo likely won’t stop during practices. He had some misfires today, and the lack of high-end arms strength showed on perimeter and out-route throws. But he, along with all of the South quarterbacks, will look for a better Day 2.

-Tanner Lee displayed exceptional arm strength and put a majority of his throws on a rope while maintaining a tight spiral. He displayed accuracy on short and some intermediate throws, but his long ball continues to plague him. He has all the arm in the world to make the throws, but his touch and accuracy pushing the ball vertical remain an issue that he can’t seem to shake.

They had tackles and guards and safeties and linebackers.

And the Senior Bowl had two quarterbacks named Josh Allen and Baker Mayfield.

In that order, by the way.

No one has been a bigger supporter of Baker Mayfield than I have. But then I watched Allen throw a howitzer to Penn State receiver DaeSean Hamilton on a deep out pattern Tuesday during the Senior Bowl North team practice at Ladd Peebles Stadium. Allen’s pass exploded out of his hand. It was one of those Andres Galarraga line drives where about halfway on its path, the ball rose to another level and hummed.

Hamilton was pretty well covered on the play, too. The cornerback had no chance.

And then on his next pass, Allen had Hamilton again on a crossing route. Overthrew by a couple yards.

“It went OK,’’ Allen told 9NEWS as he walked off the Ladd Peebles Stadium artificial surface following practice Tuesday. “Could have gone a little better but it was the first day. It’s definitely different, kind of difficult to process the speed of different receivers you’ve never thrown to before. We’ll be better tomorrow.’’

With John Elway and Dan Marino watching practice from the sideline Tuesday, Allen looked like the best quarterback from a Senior Bowl North team that also included Mayfield, Nebraska’s Tanner Lee and Washington State’s Luke Falk.

I talked to one NFL offensive coach who’s had decent success in the league and attended the Senior Bowl practices Tuesday. He said he’d take Allen ahead of Baker in the upcoming draft.

Go with the bigger guy, he said. He speaks for the majority of NFL talent evaluators.

Two of the top quarterbacks, Sam Darnold and Josh Rosen, weren’t eligible for the Senior Bowl because they entered the draft before their senior seasons. Allen may well be the Cleveland Browns No.1 overall pick, anyhow.

“It’s a tough situation to come in as a rookie and expect to be perfect right away,’’ Allen said earlier Tuesday during the Senior Bowl media session. “I know I have a lot of flaws as a quarterback.’’

He has an arm, he’s athletic, he’s big and he has a winning personality and smarts. His biggest flaw his accuracy. He was a two-year starter at Wyoming and completed only 56 percent of his passes each season.

“I’ve been working on that,’’ Allen said. “Obviously, 56 percent is not anywhere close where it needs to be. You can go and look at the tape and I’d say I’ve made a lot of strides from the previous season. I held the ball more, didn’t throw as many interceptions. I held on to the ball, threw the ball away more. Just more careful with the football. There’s always the constant battle with trying to perfect your game.

That’s what I’m dealing with right now and making sure my stroke is consistent and clean.’’

He and Darnold are housemates this offseason, working with quarterbacks coach Jordan Palmer.

Allen was plenty accurate in the first quarter of the Potato Bowl last month, throwing three touchdown passes against Central Michigan with Elway and Matt Russell, the Broncos’ director of player personnel, attending the game specifically to scout him.

“It was really cool,’’ Allen said. “You try to not treat it as a distraction when you look over to the sideline and see a guy like John Elway, it’s hard to not get excited. I just went out there and played football with my guys. It was fun.’’

Baker looked small out there. He measured in at 6-foot-1 while standing on his tippy toes – 6 and 3/8 to be more precise. He, too, has a good arm and it wasn’t fair judging him Tuesday. He attended to his mom, who fell ill, and he didn’t fly into Mobile until two hours before practice.

Talk about hitting the ground running.

“Mom’s not doing too great,’’ Mayfield said. “Family first, always.’’

He said he was honored Elway asked Senior Bowl executives to put Mayfield on the Broncos-coached North squad.

“John Elway asks you to be on his team, you don’t say no,’’ Mayfield said, not realizing Brock Osweiler did so two years ago and Kirk Cousins may or may not do the same in six weeks.

Mayfield also downplayed his slight rap that he’s another Johnny Manziel-type.

You know, a hotshot, talented, short quarterback from Texas who gets in trouble.

“Getting better as a player, learning stuff under center,’’ Mayfield. “A lot has been said about throwing the ball and measurables but there’s mental knowledge you can’t test until you’re out there with the system, that’s what I’m hoping to take away.’’

Don’t count him out yet, Broncos fans. Allen is a good guy just like all the current Bronco QBs.

Mayfield has the kind of edginess that was more common with the Denver defense in 2015.

When a team goes from Super Bowl to Senior Bowl in two short years, it needs a change.

“People want to portray the bad boy, the Johnny Manziel stuff,” Mayfield said. “But I love the game of football. There’s no doubt about that. An emotional player. I’ll do anything, whatever it takes to win. I love being around my teammates and I love leading and having responsibility.”

MOBILE, Ala. -- Every year there are draft prospects that are really easy evaluations and the discussion about them in the draft room is brief because everyone has similar grades for the player. However, there are also players with grades that are all over the map. You could have a healthy debate about the polarizing player for a long while, and there still might not be a consensus on him at the end of the day.

With that in mind, I reached out to five NFL executives and asked them this question: Who's the most polarizing prospect in this year's draft? A couple of the players mentioned are competing here at the Reese's Senior Bowl. Here are the execs' answers.

Executive 1: Wyoming QB Josh Allen
"We've got enormously high grades and really low grades for him. There's no middle ground on him."

Executive 2: LSU OLB Arden Key
"We had guys who had huge grades on him coming into the season and they plummeted during the season. We're still trying to sort him out."

Executive 3: Allen
"The accuracy issue with him is going to be a big debate in our room. Some people can explain it. Others can't get over it."

Executive 4: Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield
"Some guys have concerns about the size and character, and some think he's a little overrated as an athlete. Other people are all in on him."

Executive 5: Texas-San Antonio DE Marcus Davenport
"The early grades were good but not great. The big grades have come rolling in later in the process. I imagine we'll have a pretty good discussion on him."

Summary: That's two votes for Allen and one apiece for Key, Mayfield and Davenport.

Conclusion: The player mentioned that I probably struggle with the most is Key. The flashes are so impressive, but there are times when he's lethargic and blends into the scenery. You expect more from a guy with his ability. For the QBs mentioned, it reinforces that the Senior Bowl is a great opportunity for them to begin to change perceptions. By the end of the week, we'll have a better feel for both of them.

That said, I still think these guys could be polarizing within draft rooms throughout the whole process. They'll have their fans and their detractors.
