The Ted Bundy Doc was very mind-blowing for someone who wasn't alive then. Just crazy shit that all happened.

Yeah umbrella was top notch.
Helps eleviate the pain from dropping marvel shows. The kid that plays 5 did a great job. I also dislike Ellen page as she is whiny, so she helped her character a LOT. |

Every time someone sticks a microphone in front of her face she gives the same pained expression and goes on a 15 minute rant about evil Republicans in the same droning voice. As for your original question re: Russian Doll....eh, if you have 3ish hours to kill you could do worse I guess. Personally I probably wouldn't bother if I knew what I known now, but the last 3 episodes were actually pretty good and I do like the way they chose to end it. I really wanted to watch Umbrella as well but she's turned the corner on me into one of the very few actors/actresses who's politics have ruined them for me. It's pretty much just her and Sean Penn. Shailene Woodley would qualify but/for the fact that her performances just being shit as a whole managed to ruin the experience already before her politics did. |
Here's just her most recent bit of idiocy
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ec12JKkrhOo?start=407" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> She practices the pained face. You know she does - she sits in front of a mirror and rehearses how to put on her somber and 'real' mask. And like I said - it's pretty much constant. Here is her with her sadface on and a beanie talking about displaced indigenous people in Novia Scotia....or something, I dunno - I truthfully don't care. It's just more moping. https://www.msn.com/en-us/tv/recaps/...ism/vp-BBTBGHe Sorry - just can't handle her anymore. |

For me, due to her being butt-ugly I have zero desire to sex her. Thus she holds no power over me and cannot influence my viewing decisions. |

Watched the first season of sex education this week.
It's funny as shit. Reminded me a lot of my own childhood as I didn't have my first wank until freshman year of HS. It has a lot of sex and some nice tits but it's also funny and well written. The lead character is a 16-year old boy who can't wank for various reasons. His best friend is gay. https://i.imgur.com/14shNap.jpg Gillian Anderson is great as can't wank's sex therapist mom. Hot. https://i.imgur.com/q2o90AI.jpg Emma Mackey is a nice discount Margot Robbie, with better tits, who can actually act. https://i.imgur.com/miN2iok.png This guy is the headmaster's son and has a giant dick and also is one. https://i.imgur.com/OraBKES.jpg The virgin and the slut end up hanging out a lot. I'm not going to spoil the rest. https://i.imgur.com/srmrhPp.jpg You should watch it. |
Haven’t read through this thread lately, but we just started watching YOU and it’s lretty damn good. Has a Dexter feel to it.

Anyone seen Corporate? It's my new favorite comedy.

I don't usually go for the tall ones, but there's something about her. But yeah, the show itself is solidly written. Nice mix of the continuing [almost endless] parade of small indignities inherent in office jobs, and surreal set pieces. |

Quite hyped. Could be shite, but it looks like even tho, will be fun shite.
No way to turn down Tennant and Sheen, . . . and getta load of all the background characters. The Armageddon thing has nearly been done to death by now, but this looks to have a sense of humor. <iframe width="949" height="534" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/zf-cIXI1qe4" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
Just getting started on [the incredibly short] Bumping Mics with Ross and Atell.
Only three episodes so far, mostly through the first one. Genuinely surprised how much I had to actually pause to get the laughter out. Nothing groundbreaking or explosive, just seasoned standups with great lines and better delivery. They kind of lull you with basic boilerplate standup patter, then unleash a perfect line. Zig when you thought zag, and it just FORCES a laugh out of you. Fairly impressive, to a guy who enjoys standup but rarely laughs. More of a 'hmm, that's funny' kind of standup watcher than a belly laugher. |

Must Watch:
BSG Rescue Me Justified Seal Team The Expanse Cheers Leverage Burn Notice Blue Bloods Sherlock Lie to Me Better Call Saul It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia Good Watch: Dark Matter Six Longmire Tin Star Firefly (would be in "Must Watch" but there's only 13 episodes) Jack Ryan The Rookie Numbers Lost in Space (new series) The Punisher Fawlty Towers Last Man Standing (haven't seen the newest season) Numbers Godless Magnum, P.I. (new series) Mystery Science Theater 3000 Docuseries: Deadliest Catch Medal Of Honor Seasons on the Fly Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown Meat Eater Blue Planet I&II There's a few more, but these I know you can find and watch. The two shows I'm currently must-watching are Seal Team and The Expanse. Seal Team is a solid action-adventure show in its second season with solid writing and good characters. The Expanse is a really good show, though the first episode is a little off-beat; I usually give a show at least 6 episodes before I keep or drop it. The Expanse got riveting to me by the third episode. |

We DVR'd New Amsterdam and recently did a binge watch, very good new medical drama that shines light on what is wrong with a lot today's doctors, hospitals and the like. The series follows new medical director Max and his uncustomary approach in treating patients and running a hospital.

Documentary Now! is on one helluva roll.
I can't even pick a favorite episode this season. The most recent would probably appeal to the CP crowd in particular, as it lampoons sports docs and mediocre white guy athletes. it's a King of Kong-type doc on the rise and fall of Televised Pro Bowling, . . . kind of reminiscent of Kingpin as well. Titled - Any Given Saturday Afternoon. FTR - The direct doc they are 'satirizing' is A League of Ordinary Gentlemen. Though I'd skip the trailer until you've seen DocNow!, to be surprised how canny the satire is <iframe width="606" height="340" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Zt_UOh0f42g" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> |

Bless This Mess is better than it should be.
A lot of it is retread and stereotypical network sitcom, but it's got a good cast and good writers. It's comfort food, but it's well-made comfort food. NY yuppie couple inherits a Nebraska farm and decides to go native. Hijinks ensue as they integrate with the locals and try to make a go of rural life. Locals have a lot of quirks and foibles. Blah, blah, blah. So it's a lot of Green Acres, and a touch of Newhart. But the writing is snappy and the cast is seasoned. Particularly good is Ed Begley Jr [the village outcast/hermit], David Koechner [the village blowhard/Alpha husband], and Pam Grier [the reserved sheriff]. |

So I finally watched the last season of Americans. Goddamn that show was good. Lots of those notes hit really hard. It’s hard for me to pick anything bad about it. I will miss it. And Keri Russell.

Finally got around to Russian Doll yesterday. Binged all 8 in one sitting. It's that good. If you haven't watched it yet...

Pretty sure I've mentioned this before, but I'm not gonna look it up...
Killing Eve on BBC America just finished its second season, and it's one of the best shows on TV. Only 8 eps/season, so it's not hard to get caught up. I DVR'd and watched the entire second season in one sitting, in fact. It's worth it. |
Quote:
It tries to be timely, but the result is everything being on the nose and resentful. Cliches like broad brush and sledgehammer come to mind with each episode. Every time there is a chance for the narrative to be nuanced, it goes broad and explicit. And every SJW Soy-boy stereotype is tackled in turn. And lest people think it's just the subject matter that is irksome, I assure that it's more HOW it's about things more than what it's about. Except for the types who would applaud the message no matter how poorly handled out of a sense of moral obligation to cheerlead, even the people who would otherwise be receptive to the messages of the show have plenty of gripes about the heavy-handed reductive nature of the narratives. Perhaps the best way to hammer home the deficiencies of the show, it almost plays like if a RW creator wrote a satire of LW narratives to make fun of the faux earnestness and the painting in primary colors. |
Quote:
Kind of like a catchy song where the lyrics are nonsense, but you love to listen to it over and over anyway because it sparks your own imagination. Basically, and I guess these are technically spoilers, but the show isn't about what happens so much as the spectacle, so don't let being spoiled deter you; Eve is a wonk in the system of British Intelligence who starts to piece together the actions of a mysterious contract killer. Higher ups in BritInt set her up with an off-the-books team to track this killer down. Villanelle is this killer who is a beautiful sociopath and chameleon who can infiltrate any situation through guile and good looks. They show her engaging in several cinematic kills of 'shadow elites' and generic uber-rich baddies, eventually revealing that she is contracted by a shadowy international cabal that identifies people in society that society would be better off without. Eve and her team get obsessive about identifying, tracking and finding her to bring her to justice. Only Eve's obsession turned to a quasi-fascination and a sense of empathy for Villanelle's history, and the higher-ups who have commissioned them ostensibly for justice/law enforcement appear to have their own nefarious purposes, perhaps in competition or even collaboration with the cabal that is contracting this assassin. So it's all this cat and mouse through exotic locales and corridors of power where the mystery is what the cat will do when it actually catches the mouse, and why the cat is supposed to be chasing the mouse to begin with. But the strength is the acting, and the mood, and the imagery and the music, . . . much more than figuring out the actual narrative, which plays pretty fast and loose, and can drive you a little batty if you try to overthink it. If one were to try to encapsulate it in the most accessible way, think of James Bond adapted for mostly female leads, where the good guys are a little infatuated with the bad guys and bad guy is definitely bad but also very enthralling and fascinating. Except with basic detective work instead of all the Bond gadgets and stunts. |
last chance U is still streamable on Netflix.

Promising start tonight.
The biggest things going for it for me, is Tom Fontana and Boston history. The history means there's a story to tell, and Tom means they're less likely to **** it up. Plus, Affleck did all right with that other Boston armed heist movie thing. And Fontana and Levinson have teamed up well before. . . . <iframe width="679" height="382" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ohOp3xiJOuE" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
Man, whatever you might have heard about Euphoria, if you appreciate narrative you owe it to yourself to at least make it through the 3rd episode.
I went into it with a cynical eye, almost watching it as homework to be able to speak knowledgeably if others were discussing it. And it comes on pretty strong. The first couple episodes are pretty frenetic and nihilistic at the same time, reminiscent of Larry Clark and Harmonie Korine of a previous generation, or Bret Ellis before that. And it takes you a while to adjust to the spectacle. And there is TONS of spectacle, imagine every form of hedonism you can envision in the latter 20-teens and you're gonna see it somewhere in there. But it really kicked up a notch, or else I finally got acclimated, in the 3rd episode. It's not just the narratives themselves, but the simultaneous storytelling style and the verisimilitude. Everything is wild and out there, but still feels feasible and relatable. It might not be my favorite episode of the entire year, but it might be the one I most admire for the craft displayed. |
Over the holiday week watched the Das Boot series on Hulu which is a sequel to the excellent 80s movie. Expectations were really high and it held up to them.
|
So I watched the Romanoffs on Amazon. It bears noting that I had it on in the office while I was trying to knock some stuff out, so I undoubtedly missed some things. But it was a worthwhile watch as long as you know what you're getting into.
I didn't, but it got it's hooks into me pretty early because the first episode is really well acted. Well written too, but I'll get to that. The big thing is if you go in with any expectations, it is important to know the structure. It is essentially like a book of short stories that are all but unrelated. They're fairly long, and are pretty intensive watches. Not necessarily what I was looking for doing work in the office but whatever. They're also straight character pieces. The relationship to the Romanov family doesn't matter, largely. And they are pretty art house-y. They also tackle some pretty heavy social issues. They do so rationally (and thoroughly), IMO, but beware if you're easily offended by that kind of stuff be advised. Additionally on the note of the writing, it just dumps you into a story and the details come out. And as representative of real life, it's messy. So don't expect some cohesive storyline that follows a standard trope. It wasn't what I needed to have on while trying to knock out work, but it had me hooked. That kind of stuff normally isn't my bag, but the writing and storytelling was good enough that I kept watching, even though there were clean and definitive breaks between the stories. I'm far from qualified enough to talk about it, but it wouldn't surprise me if this was remembered (perhaps far later) as a definitive work of whatever era we are in these days. All the while, I doubt it is some sort of brilliant success. It is a fairly intensive watch and that can be hard to lock up huge audiences these days. As a guy that isn't normally into this kind of stuff, I thought it was really good. |

What did people think of the finale of Veep?
The final few seasons weren't as amazing as the first few but I also think the first few seasons of Veep are maybe the funniest seasons of any show I've ever seen so that's hard to live up to. Especially once the creator of the show left. Richardson was the star of the show the last few seasons IMO. |
