Out of Bolton/Reid/Smith, I figured Trey Smith would be the least likely to return.

This is probably still true.

Nate Taylor just now says there’s growing optimism they’ll reach a 5-year deal with Smith before the tampering period begins.

Oh boy..

Not really.

Push money down the road if you want and there's still enormous opportunity cost there.

I'd rather have that money freed up for extensions for McDuffie and Karlaftis. Or Watson. Or Bolton. An upgrade on Danna long-term. A ball-hawking FS should a guy like Bates become available.

Or pretty much ANY other position on the football field other than the RG who is just an above average pass protector. Evidently the RB was the reason we couldn't run the ball -- give his money to a damn RB for all I care.

There's really no position apart from special teams that I'm LESS interested in spending at the top of the market on than a run-first RG.

There really isn't a single argument I can find that gets me anywhere close to on board with this.

For the record I am with you. However, depending on how it's structured, I don't think any of those players you list are off the table with a Trey Smith deal...as long as it's structured appropriately. Keep in mind 100+ million in cap space is easily achievable in 2026 (without pushing money down the road). 125+ million is easily achievable in 2027 (without pushing money down the road).

Let's see what it comes in at...if that's what Veach decides to do.

Smith will be the highest paid Guard in history. One way or the other.

He's a FA in a year the cap jumped up dramatically and he's the best one on the market. We should have gotten this done long before now if we were gonna' do it.

What motivation would Trey Smith have to do a deal before this point? Takes two to tango.

Oh man. I've been completely wrong on moves that I thought Veach ****ed up before, but this seems like a potentially massive blunder.

If this limits the Chiefs ability to address the LT position, then it’s doubling down on the failed strategy of paying every other position on the offensive line top $$$… except for the position of greatest importance.

I don't think Watson is that far from a Ward type contract either. Inking him early wouldn't hurt.

I know they tried last offseason to get something done but Hunt knew these cap jumps were coming. Problem is I'm sure his agent did as well.

pugsnotdrugs19 02-25-2025 06:29 PM

Listening to Veach’s presser today pretty clear he loves DL and CB early in this draft and RB throughout.

If you sign Smith and invest in LT also, it would kinda line up with that potential draft strategy. Trying to read between the lines a little.

Hope they can figure it out. You cannot keep changing the Left Tackle every year (and almost every week in 2024 season). Six different guys at Left Tackle in 3 seasons, mixed with 5 different people at Left Tackle in 5 Super Bowl appearances during a 6 year time period. That does not feel sustainable.

Sassy Squatch 02-25-2025 06:34 PM

They're going after LT in free agency. Only question at this point is which one. Really doesn't bode well for either Morris or Suamataia either. Best case scenario one of them is taking over for Thuney in 2026(if he doesn't get extended too) and one of them probably won't find a spot.

One of the dumbest fkn things they could do.

I don't believe it.

Just trying to be nice to Trey Smith.

Sassy Squatch 02-25-2025 06:40 PM

I can't say I understand what they're planning here with Suamataia in particular. They put him out there to start as a rookie, he expectedly struggles, so you swing to the opposite extreme and redshirt his sophomore season before camp even begins? There's nowhere for him to even compete for a job now, unless Veach is just completely bluffing on his plans at LT.

Also said Omenihu wants to come back and they are talking, which Chris Jones is hinting at on Twitter.

Honestly that would be good bc without Omenihu the defense struggled at his position…which you can’t say about…another Chiefs FA on the defensive side of the ball…
