There's a wide gulf between being a bust and being "as good as Mahomes."

Just because some talking heads threw it out there as a discussion point doesn't mean it's a hot take when you say you don't think he'll reach that level. None of us do.

Maybe they haven't said he'd be as good as mahomes but it's the same tired line about being the next mahomes. To this day so many people treat every qb with a big arm and lots of throwing platforms to mahomes, as if to ignore his ability to process the game abd... way more importantly... Leadership.

I think Wisconsin chiefs got this kind of right. Caleb Williams definitely earns the talent hype and maybe he can live up to some of the talent hype. But I'm not sold on his leadership.

ToxSocks 08-12-2024 04:26 PM

I just wanna hate the guy /shrug.

I mean, lol, i do believe in his talent. I do think he's the next closest thing to Mahomes in terms of off platform throwing, arm angles and so forth.

But there's just something about him....maybe it's his arrogance. Maybe it's his lack of respect for Mahomes (and i admit, im probably making a good part of that up).

And honestly, i don't care if im right to dislike him or not. I need a heel. And i've decided that Caleb is that heel.

Kiimo 08-12-2024 04:33 PM

I also want to hate him. I don't like his attitude, I don't like his face and I don't like USC.

But three throws into the game I was like welp.

DrunkBassGuitar 08-12-2024 04:38 PM

I hate him because he's not Mahomes

Caleb is definitely arrogant, but that's probably true for every high level athlete out there. We'll see if he can live up to the hype in real games, especially Playoff games. He choked pretty bad against Notre Dame from what I remember. That was probably the biggest game of his college career and it wasn't pretty.

The weird thing about Caleb is that he has the kind of confidence and arrogance that seems rooted in insecurity. Sometimes it feels like he's trying too hard to convince people hes a leader. How will he handle adversity? Way easier to handle those things when you have talent but it raises question marks. Not just if he has the balls to deliver in big moments, but will he become a Russell Wilson or rgIII type leader players don't really follow.

UChieffyBugger 08-12-2024 05:31 PM

The glazing of Caleb in the media today has been funny to watch. Lol boy i hope the kid can deal with the pressure these folks are placing on him. Do I think he can be a good qb? Yes. But we saw this same hype around Lawrence who actually won a natty and look at him now? The hype is going to make every defense and DC want to teach him a lesson. And now it's a matter of whether he can cope with it or not. That Notre Dame game was very revealing. The moment the defense got on top of him suddenly his confidence wasn't the same. And this is what separates Pat from others because he's been held down for three quarters before but steps up big down the stretch. We'll see if Caleb has that dawg in him.

RealSNR 08-12-2024 06:05 PM

UChieffy who do you hate more? Caleb Williams or Caitlin Clark?

I think Caleb is a better prospect than Lawrence (who I took a lot of flak for saying he was going to be a more athletic Goff).

But the college tape of Caleb shows a lot of careless throws. I think he will have some great games and some games where he throws too many picks.

I almost want him to fail as much as Matt Cassel both have that huge entitlement factor. Cassel had it during the Pioli era never taking ownership of his mistakes.

Eh, I don't know. But he has an arm, that's certain. And he's athletic enough. Everything for him in terms of his success is going to be in his head, imo. Either he can play at the NFL level, or he can't. But physically he's got what it takes.

Caleb is probably the best QB prospect CHI has ever had. Just from a physical attribute standpoint, he has to be? CHI hasn't had a decent QB for how long? Crazy how bad they've been about picking QBs.

Justin Fields is very talented from a physical standpoint.

I think this is the result of gayness + NIL wealth. LOL.

Never before has a NFL player come into the league worth 10m from NIL... so his IDGAF attitude + his closet :thailor: NTTIATWWT... creates this guy.

But, he's working with TB12, so he could be very good. Hard to say what this guy is made of.

****ler was probably better. He had a lot more size, every bit of good an arm and had success in the NFL before McDouche ran him off because Brother****ing Cheatriot ****bag gonna **** their Brothers.

Unfortunately he took his inability to produce insulin to Chicago.

I really like what Poles has done the last few years to the Chicago roster.

He is not stepping into a Carolina Panthers situation. Lots of talent on the Bears roster has been added.

Watching Hard Knocks.

Man - every time, and I mean every time - I heard Nick Saban talk I am just impressed as hell by that guy.

And I don't know if it's just his general countenance, but when he says this stuff, it doesn't sound like your typical coach speak bullshit.

It sounds sincere. It sounds, for lack of a better word, wise. Have Josh McDaniels say the same thing and it's going to sound fake as can be. But when it's Saban it just sounds profound.

The more I hear from him, the more I understand the success he's had.

Yeah - if the Panthers could've pulled their heads from their asses long enough to make the no-brainer pick and take Stroud, that would've been great.

But no, there are still teams that fall victim to "He's a winner" when some dude goes out there throwing for a bunch of yards with the sliders set to Rookie mode.

Scout traits, assholes. What did Bryce Young show from a traits standpoint to EVER suggest he'd be a better quarterback than Stroud?

But no, Carolina is run by morons. So about 80% of the teams in the AFC have good young passers while the NFC is still being run by Dak Prescott and Brock Purdy.

I remember reading before the draft that Tepper liked how Bryce Young acted at rich people parties and that's the best example of billionaire brain I've heard in a long time.

This kid dresses up nicely and knows how to act around important people. Sounds like my kind of QB even though he's the size of Tyrion Lannister and Stroud just had one of the best pro days in the history of them.

Paul Alexander judges the intelligence of offensive lineman by where they tapped a bottle to get the ketchup out.

In Magic Johnsons first meeting with the Lakers pre-draft, the Lakers owner at the time (Jack Kent Cooke) was said to have brought in some ungodly expensive fish - Magic turned up his nose at it and asked for a cheeseburger.

Worked out okay for the Lakers.

Watching Hard Knocks, and acknowledging that they're going to keep it positive, but it looks like there's a good vibe around him and they're having fun as a team

Eberflus is a wildcard and Waldron is a run heavy OC so not super sure if he's the right fit for Williams, but like I said upstream, its going to come down to how he handles failure and adjusts to the league

Mahomes had zero hype before the league took notice, and had to make adjustments, Williams has all the hype so he's going to welcomed to the league more quickly

The talent is there, and around him at the skill positions though. I'm looking forward to tuning into some Bears games this season

Correct which is why I am glad Hunt is not one of those overbearing owners that dictate to football people who they want. The Panthers owner effectively allowed the Texans to get Stroud and the Bears to get Williams while they are stuck hoping Young pans out. For a GM that is an error that gets them fired. Since he is the owner there is very little repercussions on being that wrong.

wazu 08-16-2024 05:06 PM

a) I think the creepy video that surfaced of Diddy seemingly grooming a young Bieber happens more often than people likely think in that world

b) A lot of new rappers are actually from the streets and many have likely spent some court mandated time around nothing but other men in close quarters, so you can draw your own conclusions

Great talent who is overhated on here. Used to live in Chicago. To say they're sports mad over there will be an understatement. They deserve some hapinesss after decades and decades of absolute QB hell.

UChieffyBugger 08-17-2024 01:11 PM

Watched most of the half. He struggled big time against the Bengals 2nd string backups. Went 2/6 for 19 yards and three straight three and outs. Then in his fourth drive he threw a deep ball that drew a defensive foul and put them in the redzone. He thrn took a sack that killed the drive and had to settle for a field goal. Then he came out for his fifth drive and at this point the bengals were working in third stringers according to Bengals twitter. And that's when Caleb came alive. Threw a great pass moving to his left for 40 yards and then scrambled for a touchdown inside the redzone.

The media will hype up the last two plays. And no doubt they were good. But the issue he's always had remains the same. On script he had no answers. And in four trips to thr redzone he's not thrown a single TD pass.

We'll see how he goes but remember he will be 23 years old in November. At Caleb's age Pat already had a year as a backup and went on to throw 50 td's and 5000 yards. Caleb will have to deal with the pressure the media are placing on him just like Pat did.

Mahomes was a little bit the same way his rookie preseason year (2017). Just a little bit unsure through the progression of the play. Only took him a year to move out of that stage and light everything on fire.

I think this rookie year with Caleb is roughly the closest we're going to get to seeing what would happen in an alt universe where Mahomes started in 2017. Obviously there's no accounting for Andy Reid versus Matt ****ing Eberflus, and even for going #1 overall, I still think Mahomes at 10 was the better prospect coming out of college, but I think it's a close approximation.

M not knowledgeable enough to predict if he'll be a bust or an MVP but I'm glad he's in the NFC
