FringeNC 06-22-2017 06:22 PM

Clark Hunt is not going to refuse to pay Dorsey. Reid wouldn't have signed his extension if he really wanted Dorsey to stay and Clark said no. Most likely explanation, given the timing, is that Reid is pissed off at Dorsey for mismanaging the cap to an extent it required cutting or Maclin, or convincing him to draft Mahomes. The timing is just crazy.

Screw that. Multiple players are cheating on every single NFL play. Madden was right. "If you aren't cheating, you aren't trying."

Lightrise 06-22-2017 06:24 PM

Huge mistake, BUT, there are several issues that surely annoyed Clark. Hali's contract was terrible, effort should have been made to restructure Charles. Fans deserved that, regardless. The Tardif contract still stuns me. Then there is the tampering and lost draft pick, the failed 3rd round CB, Bailey's contract too expensive. Then there was the risk with Tyrek, but that one worked out, so did Parker and of course Peters. Getting Mahomes was a first class move. So there has been mistakes, but still I think Dorsey was the best GM in the history of the franchise. So what comes next? The team will change. Dorsey puts higher value on certain positions, someone else will see it differently. I just hope its an internal hire at this point. Worried we will reinvent the wheel and run this thing into the ditch.

so I heard on 610 that Bill Maas is saying that Reid was the man behind the scenes anyway so cutting bait with Dorsey is not as bad as you would think.

Sounds like Dorsey's job was to manage the $ and not much more. And he didn't do that very well, let's be honest.

King Carl's drafts were average at best, but his free agents leave Dorsey's in the dust.

Maybe. But if he hit on Mahomes, that move alone will blow away Peterson. But let's compare his current best. Peters, Hill, Kelce, Jones are already among the best at their position. Terrence Hill looks like he could be too. Parker and Ware have been very good FA pickups as well. And it took Carl more than 4 years to get all the guys you listed. If Dorsey had gotten 20 years like Carl did, then his accomplishments would have likely eclipsed Carl's.

Next to starting Grbac in the playoffs, Karls worst move prior to Herm was letting Keith Traylor go.

It's a different NFL. Carl would be even worse in this era where drafting is even more important. It seems like the spin is that Dorsey was no big deal and Reid is the personnel man anyway seems like hope more than facts.

The way they put it on 610 is, Reid is ready to sell out his own wife for a SB. So if you go with that, if he thought for any reason that Dorsey was prohibiting progress then he would run right over him.

And at that point in time, Dorsey may not have shown his cards. Dorsey might have thought if he waited for Ballard to leave then tried to threaten Clark with "I still might go to elsewhere" or otherwise wouldn't commit long term thinking it would land him a bigger deal, well, how'd that work out?

So this year we should expect Reid to hire a man to do clock management for him. If Reid is all in on a SB and has an ounce of self-evaluation in him, he will find someone to help him with game management. And he might think about letting someone else call plays.

Whether Reid is capable of admitting these things to himself or others seems doubtful.

IF that's the case then yeah, Dorsey sucks and Clark gambled wrong that Dorsey would stay. However we can't really have it both ways here. If Dorsey was Reid's bitch than Clark should have made room for Ballard and parted with Dorsey. If Ballard was worth letting go for Dorsey, than Dorsey is worth more than 610 is saying.

Can't really say Dorsey isn't good yet we tried keeping him over Ballard.

I bet Hunt is paying Reid as the top coach in the league with his new extension and Dorsey was like "I want to be the highest paid GM and these teams have told me they will pay me as such"

And Clark looked at the salary cap and the fact KC only won 1 playoff game in 4 years and decided to pass.

The official release from KC seems to indicate that's the case by its exact wording of letting Dorsey Perdue other opportunities.

I bet John ends up GBs new GM.

jjchieffan 06-22-2017 07:17 PM

After reading the posts about Reid being the one deciding on personnel, I am hopeful that may be the case. If so, then we should be fine. I would guess that the coaches often have more say so than they get credit for anyway. Take Marty for example. Carl Peterson made his best player decisions when Marty was coach. During the Gunther and Vermeil years, our team got bad due to poor drafting and free agency. Then Herm was hired and drafting improved. Meanwhile, AJ Smith looked like a brilliant GM while Marty was his coach. Marty was canned for Norf. Next thing you know, AJ Smith sucks and gets fired for it. Dorsey will land somewhere soon. So we will soon see if it was Reid or Dorsey when they are running separate teams.

Then moving up in the draft to reach on a QBOTF

Then dumping cap space.

Reid shouldn't have been making that decision and Clark has said it isn't the case. But even so you don't fire or ask to push a guy out over how he handles the Maclin situation.

Most importantly, whether Reid or more likely Clark, you don't let Ballard go because you are semi-content with a GM. It's too big a decision to say "eh I'm semi-content". I'm just not accepting Dorsey as Reid's bitch. Both of their histories and how this team has been built says that isn't what happened.

That remains to be seen. If we asked that question in CP's first 3 years we wouldn't have an answer either. There are guys on this roster that could potentially be but that's a long way and jump from here. Dorsey has definitely drafted Jared Allen level players IMO. The other three are monsters but Carl also had 20 years. You could argue Houston if it wasn't for his injuries. Who knows what Kelce, Peters ect turn into. I'm not saying they will be, but it's crazy early for anyone he drafted.

It very well could be a combo of things, those very much included. I mean, you took 2 fan favorites, well 1 fan favorite and 1 fan-hero in JC and just told them to **** off. You dump what should be your #1 RB and #1 WR without so much as even an attempt at a contract negotiation and that is enough to get your ass on the radar.

how did teams, some of which who have actually gone to a Super Bowl, ever get by without Dorsey and his scouts?

Probably by hiring a new/outside GM every few years to keep things fresh.

So the Maclin deal could have played a significant part if they were already at odds.

Andy was more pissed off during the Maclin release than we've ever seen him. He was snapping at reporters and he never does that. You could tell he was on edge and I bet some other players were expressing some bad feelings too.

I think some bad contracts, most notably Bowe, Grubbs and Tamba were building up to this move, but cutting Maclin was the final straw.

Andy and Clark most likely thought that they have most of their scouts here along with Veach, Borgonzi and the 2 new strong personnel men that Dorsey has hired recently.

This seems like a perfect transition to a guy like Veach who has a great relationship with Andy and 4 years experience learning Dorsey's scouting techniques.

Makes sense to me more than the Green Bay thing.

Dunno if it's a good thing though

Give it a couple years and revisit this.

I am going to quote what someone I know put on facebook that basically verifies what I have heard from several friends that are Red Coaters, one of which has a family member that works in the FO.

Quote:

I've known since last season there were some differences between Reid and Dorsey related on who to draft, who to sign as FA, etc. A good friend involved with the Chiefs organization made me aware last year that Dorsey was unhappy with the amount of control Reid had, but I'm not at liberty to say much more than that. I was truly hoping they'd find a way to work it out before it came to this.

Reid had final say over the roster, always has had. It's very difficult for a GM to build a team the way he thinks is wisest...when the HC has more control and final say on the 53 man roster. Reids history in Philly acting as both the GM/HC has not been successful in more than a decade. His most successful years were from 2001-2004. I do not trust Reid based on his history as a GM in Philly. Dorsey I trusted.

Reids draft history has not been as successful as Dorsey's either. Only McNabb has had long term consistent success as a drafted Reid player.

Reid is who brought Maclin here and tampered, not Dorsey. Reid is who wanted Smith in 2013. 20+ members of Reids coaching and training staff are people he's developed bonds with or family, that he's brought to KC and added to the payroll. Reid is who wanted Foles last year when no other team showed an interest. Mahomes is a Reid choice too. I sure hope he turns out to be a McNabb, and not another Reid QB bust.
